Potential of a fucoidan-rich Ascophyllum nodosum extract to reduce Salmonella shedding and improve gastrointestinal health in weaned pigs naturally infected with Salmonella

Background:Dietary supplementation with a fucoidan-rich Ascophyllum nodosum extract(ANE),possessing an in vitro anti-Salmonella Typhimurium activity could be a promising on-farm strategy to control Salmonella infection in *** objectives of this study were to:1)evaluate the *** activity of ANE(containing 46.6%fucoidan,18.6%laminarin,10.7%mannitol,4.6%alginate)in vitro,and;2)compare the effects of dietary supplementation with ANE and Zinc oxide(ZnO)on growth performance,Salmonella shedding and selected gut parameters in naturally infected *** was established post-weaning(newly weaned pig experiment)and following regrouping of post-weaned pigs and experimental re-infection with ***(challenge experiment).Results:in the in vitro assay,increasing ANE concentrations led to a linear reduction in *** counts(Pin the newly weaned pig experiment(12 replicates/treatment),high ANE supplementation increased gain to feed ratio,similar to ZnO supplementation,and reduced faecal Salmonella counts on d 21 compared to the low ANE and control groups(Piment included thirty-six pigs from the previous experiment that remained on their original dietary treatments(control and high ANE groups with the latter being renamed to ANE group)apart from the ZnO group which transitioned onto a control diet on d 21(ZnO-residual group).These dietary treatments had no effect on performance,faecal scores,Salmonella shedding or colonic and caecal Salmonella counts(P>0.05).ANE supplementation decreased the Enterobacteriaceae counts compared to the *** counts were also reduced in the ZnO-residual group compared to the control(Pion decreased the expression of interleukin 22 and transforming growth factor beta 1 in the ileum compared to the control(Pions:ANE supplementation was associated with some beneficial changes in the composition of the colonic microbiota,Salmonella sh

Thiol-based redox post-translational modifications have emerged as important mechanisms of signaling and regulation in all organisms, and thioredoxin plays a key role by controlling the thiol-disulfide status of target proteins. Recent redox proteomic studies revealed hundreds of proteins regulated by glutathio- nylation and nitrosylation in the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, while much less is known about the thioredoxin interactome in this organism. By combining qualitative and quantitative proteomic analyses, we have comprehensively investigated the Chlamydomonas thioredoxome and 1188 targets have been identified. They participate in a wide range of metabolic pathways and cellular pro- cesses. This study broadens not only the redox regulation to new enzymes involved in well-known thiore- doxin-regulated metabolic pathways but also sheds light on cellular processes for which data supporting redox regulation are scarce （aromatic amino acid biosynthesis, nuclear transport, etc）. Moreover, we char- acterized 1052 thioredoxin-dependent regulatory sites and showed that these data constitute a valuable resource for future functional studies in Chlamydomonas. By comparing this thioredoxome with proteomic data for glutathionylation and nitrosylation at the protein and cysteine levels, this work confirms the existence of a complex redox regulation network in Chlamydomonas and provides evidence of a tremendous selectivity of redox post-translational modifications for specific cysteine residues.

From the analysis of the data of the present inquiry into infantmortality and its causes in Peiping,the following may be worthy ofspecial note:*** in Peiping seems to be more harmful to infants thanany other *** to the usual rapid decease in percentage of infantdeaths from early infancy toward the end of the first year of life,thepresent data shows a gradual rise after the sixth month of *** be due to weaning babies from mothers' breasts at this periodwithout provision of an adequate *** receipt of ante-natal care is associated with a lower infantmortality,while artificial feeding in infancy is accompanied by a defin-itely higher death *** group with the high family income shows a smaller riskof infant deaths,as does the group with the more remunerative occupa-tion of the *** of the causes of infant mortality are due to readily pre-ventable *** the six principal causes,four are readily prevent-able ones,namely,diarrhea,malnutrition,tetanus neo-natorum andbirth *** the risk of infant death is no less among babiesdelivered by modern physicians or midwives than among those by old-type midwives,which is probably due to a higher percentage of moredifficult labors attended,yet the causes of neo-natal deaths are mostlynon-preventable ones in contrast with the large proportion of neo-nataldeaths for the old-type midwife group that is due to tetanus neo-na-torum,"convulsion" and birth injury.

Digitizing Traditional Lao Textile to Modem Weave Technique

Traditional Lao textiles are wealth in religious motifs, the motifs and patterns on the textiles reflect traditions, beliefs and livelihood of people. The structure of Lao motifs and patterns are complicated, but weaving processes still use traditional techniques and simple floor-loom. Therefore, it takes a lot of time for making a weave-draft on the loom and percentage of losing weave-drafts is very high. in contrast, industrial textiles use electronic loom and digital weave-drafts to produce fabrics, which are suitable for fast production but lack complicated traditional patterns. As a result, this paper introduces scientific approaches for digitizing motifs, patterns, and weave-drafts of traditional Lao textiles. Mathematical principles of Frieze and Wallpaper groups are investigated for digital design. The paper presents two standard files, image file format and WiF file as digital weave-draft in order to fill the gap between traditional and modem weave techniques. The standard files are understandable and usable for both hand-weavers and weaving machines. Our study shows that a modern electronic TC2 loom is a suitable loom to connect between traditional Lao weave technique and modem weave technique.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine whether the efficacy of transtheoretical model(TTM)-based interventions on physical activity(PA)varied according to the following criteria:(1) interventions targeted the actual stages of change(SOCs) or did not;(2) participants were selected according to their SOC or were not; and(3) its theoretical constructs(decisional balance, temptation, self-efficacy, processes of change).Methods: Thirty-three randomized controlled trials assessing TTM-based interventions promoting PA in adults were systematically ***: The between-group heterogeneity statistic(Qb) did not reveal any differential efficacy either in interventions targeting the actual SOC compared with those that did not(Qb = 1.48, p = 0.22) or in interventions selecting participants according to their SOC compared with those that did not(Qb = 0.01, p = 0.91). TTM-based interventions enhanced PA behavior whether they targeted the actual SOC(Cohen's d = 0.36; 95%confidence interval(Ci): 0.22–0.49) or not(d = 0.23; 95%Ci: 0.09–0.38) and whether they selected their participants according to their SOC(d = 0.33; 95%Ci: 0.13–0.53) or not(d = 0.32; 95%Ci: 0.19–0.44). The moderators of the efficacy of TTM-based interventions were the number of theoretical constructs used to tailor the intervention(Qb = 8.82, p = 0.003), the use of self-efficacy(Qb = 6.09, p = 0.01), and the processes of change(Qb = 3.51, p = 0.06).Conclusion: TTM-based interventions significantly improved PA behavior, and their efficacy was not moderated by SOC but by the TTM theoretical constructs.

黑磷(BP)纳米片可淬灭荧光染料的荧光,基于这一特性,合成了可特异性识别人乳腺癌细胞MCF7的脱氧核糖核酸(DNA)适体,并用荧光染料5-羧基荧光素(FAM)将其标记。当BP纳米片与该适体混合时,其荧光被淬灭。而当MCF7细胞存在时,DNA适体由于可以识别该细胞并与之结合,会从BP纳米片上脱离,从而实现荧光恢复。恢复的荧光强度与细胞数量呈线性关系。实验结果表明,利用BP纳米片检测乳腺癌细胞具有高效、特异、灵敏的优势,这一方法可以推广至其他肿瘤细胞的检测。

SPECT-computed tomography in rats with TNBS-induced colitis: A first step toward functional imaging

AiMTo assess the feasibility of SPECT-computed tomography (CT) in rats with trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced acute colitis and confront it with model inflammatory *** was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by intrarectal injection of TNBS (n = 10) while controls received vehicle (n = 10). SPECT-CT with intravenous injection of 10 MBq of 67Ga-Citrate was performed at day 2. SPECT-CT criteria were colon wall thickness and maximal wall signal intensity. Laboratory parameters were assessed: colon weight:length ratio, colon cyclooxygenase-2 expression by western blot and histological inflammatory *** weight/length ratio, colon COX-2 expression and histological inflammatory score were significantly higher in the TNBS group than in the control group (P = 0.0296, P ively). Pixel max tend to be higher in the TNBS group than in the control group but did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.0662). Maximal thickness is significantly increased in the TNBS group compared to the control group (P = 0.0016) while colon diameter is not (P = 0.1904). Maximal thickness and colon diameter were correlated to colon COX-2 expression (P = 0.0093, P = 0.009 respectively) while pixel max was not (P = 0.22). Maximal thickness was significantly increased when inflammation was histologically observed (P = 0.0043) while pixel max and colon diameter did not (P = 0.2452, P = 0.3541, respectively).CONCLUSiONSPECT-CT is feasible and easily distinguished control from colitic rats.
