Brachioradialis tendon transfer and palmaris longus tendon graft for thumb avulsion:A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND Thumb replantation following complete traumatic avulsion requires complex techniques to restore function,especially in cases of avulsion at the level of the metacarpophalangeal joint(MCP I)and avulsion of the flexor pollicis longus(FPL)at the musculotendinous *** treatments include direct tendon suture or tendon transfer,most commonly from the ring *** optimize function and avoid donor finger complications,we performed thumb replantation with flexion restoration using brachioradialis(BR)tendon transfer with palmaris longus(PL)tendon *** sUMMARY A 20-year-old left-handed male was admitted for a complete traumatic left thumb amputation following an accident while sliding from the top of a *** patient presented with skin and bone avulsion at the MCP I,avulsion of the FPL tendon at the musculotendinous junction(zone 5),avulsion of the extensor pollicis longus tendon(zone T3),and avulsion of the thumb’s collateral arteries and *** patient was treated with two stage thumb *** first intervention consisted of thumb replantation with MCP I arthrodesis,resection of avulsed FPL tendon and implantation of a silicone tendon *** second intervention consisted of PL tendon graft and BR tendon ***-up at 10 months showed good outcomes with active interphalangeal flexion of 70°,grip strength of 45 kg,key pinch strength of 15 kg and two-point discrimination threshold of 4 *** Flexion restoration after complete thumb amputation with FPL avulsion at the musculotendinous junction can be achieved using BR tendon transfer with PL tendon graft.

Insular marine biotas are often richer in faunal diversity than those from the open sea in the same geo- graphical region. The existence of particular island effects were tested under polar conditions by compar- ing infaunal benthic assemblages on Peter I Island with those of similar latitudes in the open ocean at the Bellingshausen sea and also from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. sampling was carried out aboard the R/v Hesperides during the expedition named BENTART-2003 from 24 January to 3 March 2003. Benthic samples were collected at 18 stations ranging from 90 to 2 044 m depth, using an UsNEL-type box corer （BC） dredge. Representatives of 32 higher taxa of invertebrates were found. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed various patterns in the data. First, significant differences in polychaete abundance were detected between the stations located in the open sea and the remaining sites （island plus mainland sites）. Bivalve abundances were also distinct between island and mainland sampling sites. sediment columns taken from the island seafloor exhibited the highest rate of bioturbation by the infauna. These findings confirm the model that islands develop distinct assemblages characterized by the enhancement of the benthic commu- nities even in cold waters. several abiotic factors were measured simultaneously at the seafloor and along the water column to investigate faunal distribution patterns. significant correlations were found between the benthic assemblages and a combination of two environmental variables：＂island effect＂（measured as a categorical variable） and the redox state of sediments. Richer and more complex benthic assemblages were found in Peter I Island＇s sea bottom, whereas the more depauperate bottoms remained in the open sea.

Provenance of sediments from Barra del Tordo and Tesoro beaches, Tamaulipas state, northwestern Gulf of Mexico

The mineralogy, bulk sediment geochemical composition, and U–Pb ages of detrital zircons retrieved from the Barra del Tordo(Tordo) and Tesoro beach sediments in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico were analyzed to determine their provenance. The beach sediments are mainly composed of quartz, ilmenite, magnetite, titanite,zircon, and anorthite. The weathering proxies such as the Chemical Index of Alteration(CIA), Chemical Index of Weathering(CIW), and Plagioclase Index of Alteration(PIA), reveal a moderate-to-high intensity of weathering in the source area. The chondrite-normalized rare earth element(REE) patterns are similar to felsic igneous rocks, with large negative europium anomaly(Eu/Eu^(*)= ~ 0.47–0.80 and ~ 0.57–0.67 in the Tordo and Tesoro beach sediments,respectively).Three major zircon U–Pb age groups are identified in the Tordo and Tesoro beach sediments, i.e., Proterozoic(~2039–595 Ma), Mesozoic(~ 244–70.3 Ma), and Cenozoic(~ 65.9–1.2 Ma). The differences of the zircon age spectrum between the Tordo and Tesoro beach sediments are not significant. The comparison of zircon U–Pb ages in this study with ages of potential source terranes suggests that the Mesozoic and Cenozoic zircons of the studied Tordo and Tesoro beach sediments were derived from the Eastern Alkaline Province(EAP) and Mesa Central Province(MCP). similarly, the likely sources for the Proterozoic zircons were the sierra Madre Oriental(sMOr) and Oaxaquia in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. The results of this study further indicate that the sediments delivered to the beaches by rivers and redistributed by longshore currents were crucial in determining the sediment provenance.

Feasibility of the 2-point method to determine the load-velocity relationship variables during the countermovement jump exercise

Purpose:This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of load-velocity(L-v)relationship variables obtained through the 2-point method using different load combinations and velocity ***:Twenty men performed 2 identical sessions consisting of 2 countermovement jumps against 4 external loads(20 kg,40 kg,60 kg,and80 kg)and a heavy squat against a load linked to a mean velocity(Mv)of 0.55 m/s(load_(0.55)).The L-v relationship variables(load-axis intercept(L_(0)),velocity-axis intercept(v_(0)),and area under the L-v relationship line(A_(line)))were obtained using 3 velocity variables(Mv,mean propulsive velocity(MPv),and peak velocity)by the multiple-point method including(20-40-60-80-load_(0.55))and excluding(20-40-60-80)the heavy squat,as well as from their respective 2-point methods(20-load_(0.55)and 20-80).Results:The L-v relationship variables were obtained with an acceptable reliability(coefncient of variation(Cv)≤7.30%;intra-class correlation coefficient>0.63).The reliability of L_(0)and v_(0)was comparable for both methods(Cv_(ratio)(calculated as higher value/lower value):1.11-1.12),but the multiple-point method provided Al_(ine)with a greater reliability(Cv_(ratio)=1.26).The use of a heavy squat provided the L-v relationship variables with a comparable or higher reliability than the use of a heavy countermovement jump load(Cv_(ratio):1.06-1.19).The peak velocity provided the load-velocity relationship variables with the greatest reliability(Cv_(ratio):1.15-1.86)followed by the Mv(Cv_(ratio):1.07-1.18),and finally the *** 2-point methods only revealed an acceptable validity for the Mv and MPv(effect size≤0.19;Pearson s product-moment correlation coefficient≥0.96;Lin's concordance correlation coefficient≥0.94).Conclusion:The 2-point method obtained from a heavy squat load and Mv or MPv is a quick,safe,and reliable procedure to evaluate the lower-body maximal neuromuscular capacities through the L-v relationship.

The E2F/DP pathway is a widely conserved regulatory mechanism in pluricellular *** family of E2F and DP transcription factors was originally described having a role in the transition from the G1 to the s phase of the cell ***,the discovery of hundreds of possible gene targets and their involvement in many other biochemical processes,soon showed that they participated in cell development and differentiation,chromatin remodeling,DNA repair and *** E2F/DP transcription factors can act as either activators or repressors of transcription depending on their association to other regulatory proteins,particularly the retinoblastoma protein,or even depending to their protein structure that can define their *** plants the E2F/DP pathway also regulates endoreduplication,a process present along the life cycle,from organ elongation to root differentiation and *** transcription factors also help plant cells to respond to environmental disturbances such as those caused by different types of radiation,or by *** review focuses on the“so called”non-canonical functions of the E2F/DP family proteins in animal and plant cells,that are in fact essential activities that connect regulatory circuits among multiple metabolic pathways by means of their atypical functions.

We present a theoretical study on the effects of intense laser field(ILF)and static electric field on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of a cylindrical quantum dot with Rosen-Morse axial potential under the framework of effective mass and parabolic band *** study also takes into account the effects of the structure parameters(η,v1,and R).The analytical expressions of the linear,third-order nonlinear and total optical absorption coefficients(TOACs)and the relative refractive index changes(RRICs)are obtained by using the compact-densitymatrix *** results of numerical calculations show that the resonant peak position of the TOACs and RRICs shifts towards lower energies and the magnitude of the peak increases with the effect of the static electric field and *** addition,it is observed that while the resonant energies of the TOACs and RRICs of system shift towards the higher(lower)energies with the enhancement ofη,v1,they decrease with the augmentation of ***,the findings of this study show that the optical properties of the structure can be adjusted by changing the magnitude of structure parameters and applied external fields.

Principles of surgical resection in hilar cholangiocarcinoma

The aim of this article is to describe the surgical techniques for the treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma(HC).Resection with microscopically negative margin(R0) is the only way to cure patients with ***,resection of the caudate lobe and part of segment Ⅳ,combined with a right or left hepatectomy,bile duct resection,lymphadenectomy of the hepatic hilum and sometimes vascular resection,is the standard surgical procedure for *** frozen-section examination of proximal and distal biliary margins is necessary to confirm the suitability of *** lymphadenectomy probably has little direct effect on survival,inaccurate staging information may influence post resection treatment *** venous and arterial resections should be undertaken in selected cases to achieve a R0 *** concept of 'no-touch proposed' in 1999 by Neuhaus et al combine an extended right hepatectomy with systematic portal vein resection and caudate lobectomy avoiding hilar dissection and possible intraoperative microscopic dissemination of cancer *** recently minor liver resections have been proposed for treatment of *** the hilar bifurcation of the bile ducts is near to liver segments Ⅳ,Ⅴ and Ⅰ,adequate liver resection of these segments together with the bile ducts can result in cure.

Effects of silicon Nanoparticles on the Transient Liquid Phase Bonding of 304 stainless steel

Transient liquid phase （TLP） bonding of 304 stainless steel with nickel based filler metal, BNi-9, was performed to study the influence of silicon nanoparticles （NPs） on the mechanical and structural properties of the bonding area. It was found that silicon NPs act as a melting point depressant in the brazing process; the formation of silicon TLP induces the dissolution of elements of the metal filler and promotes a uniform distribution in the bonding area. silicon NPs induce the development of smaller eutectic structures in the melting zone; it has been related to microhardness measurements, which are lower when the silicon NPs are used in the brazing process.

Background:Trees and forests in drylands help mitigate the challenges through provision of economic products and vital environmental services such as habitat for biodiversity,prevention of erosion and desertification,regulation of water,microclimate,and soil *** condition and changes in dry forests can be assessed by using ecological indicators able to quantify spatial and temporal changes in *** of the ways to determine the condition of the forest is to study the dominant tree species and its *** study aimed to assess whether the abundance of Prosopis flexuosa saplings is affected by environmental and biological ***:To evaluate the first variables we used data from remote sensing such as satellite images and Aster Global Digital Model(GDEM).The second set of variables was about exotic and native ungulates and we used feces of these animals and camera traps to take *** found that sapling abundance related positively to sandy substrates and negatively to Wetness *** the other hand,in relation to biological variables,the abundance of saplings was positively affected by density of adult trees and by number of seeds dispersed by equines,but space use by Lama guanicoe had a negative relationship with *** research shows that *** saplings are benefited from sandy substrates and the conditions around adult *** addition to this,we found that exotic ungulates in low densities have neutral(***)or positive(***)effects on sapling ***:Based on these findings,we conclude that regeneration of the population of *** in our study area has no major *** addition,we corroborated that the presence of exotic and domestic ungulates in low densities does not have deleterious consequences for saplings of the dominant tree,***.
