Anti-Aging Efficacy of a New Alendronate-Pravastatin Cosmetic Combination: A Randomized Double Blind Comparative Study

Progeria is a rare genetic disease that causes accelerated aging and death in children at a mean age of 13.5 years. An?aminobisphosphonate-statin combination has been shown to reduce the toxicity of the mutated protein, progerin, in progeria patient cell cultures and in a mouse model of the disease. This combination is currently being tested in a European Therapeutic Trial for progeria in Marseille (*** identifier NCT00731016). Progerin has been shown to be produced by skin cells during physiological aging. The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of a new and original cosmetic formulation containing alendronate and pravastatin sodium salts, reduce crow’s feet wrinkles, and cheek hollow in a double blind, randomized and placebo controlled comparative study. Three cosmetic preparations were evaluated using Fast Optical in vivo Topometry of human Skin (FOITS): one containing sodium alendronate and sodium pravastatin, a placebo, and a commercial anti-aging product. Fifty-seven female and twenty-five male volunteers between 51 and 71-year-old were selected. Each subject tested two of the three products once a day, in the evening, by spreading each selected product on one side of the face. Skin micro-relief was analyzed at 0, 28, 56 and 84 days. Statistical analysis of 7 clinical qualitative (left or right side of face, gender, and 3 skin types) and 6 quantitative parameters (age, weight at each test time, wrinkle clinical grade at inclusion time) showed no statistical differences between the three tested products. In contrast, most of the 8 quantitative FOITS parameters describing skin micro-relief were statistically improved by the alendronate-pravastatin combination compared to the placebo or to the commercial anti-aging product. A cosmetic preparation containing alendronate and pravastatin sodium salts exhibited anti-aging effects by reducing crow’s feet wrinkles and restoring cheek volume.

Organic aerosol molecular composition and gas–particle partitioning coefficients at a Mediterranean site(Corsica)

Molecular speciation of atmospheric organic matter was investigated during a short summer field campaign performed in a citrus fruit field in northern Corsica（June 2011）. Aimedat assessing the performance on the field of newly developed analytical protocols, this work focuses on the molecular composition of both gas and particulate phases and provides an insight into partitioning behavior of the semi-volatile oxygenated fraction. Limonene ozonolysis tracers were specifically searched for, according to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry（GC–MS） data previously recorded for smog chamber experiments. A screening of other oxygenated species present in the field atmosphere was also performed. About sixty polar molecules were positively or tentatively identified in gas and/or particle phases. These molecules comprise a wide range of branched and linear, mono and di-carbonyls（C_3–C7）,mono and di-carboxylic acids（C_3–C_18）, and compounds bearing up to three *** these compounds, some can be specifically attributed to limonene oxidation and others can be related to α- or β-pinene oxidation. This provides an original snapshot of the organic matter composition at a Mediterranean site in summer. Furthermore, for compounds identified and quantified in both gaseous and particulate phases, an experimental gas/particle partitioning coefficient was determined. Several volatile products, which are not expected in the particulate phase assuming thermodynamic equilibrium, were nonetheless present in significant concentrations. Hypotheses are proposed to explain these observations, such as the possible aerosol viscosity that could hinder the theoretical equilibrium to be rapidly reached.

AIM:To validate the utility of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) for the clinical management of acute ischemic colitis(IC).METHODS:This is a magnetic resonance(MR) prospective evaluation of 7 patients who were proved to have acute IC on the basis of clinical,endoscopic and computed tomography(CT) findings and who were imaged in our institution between February 2011 and July *** mean age of the patients was 72.28 *** CTs were obtained using a 64-detector row configuration for all patients with un-enhanced and contrast-enhanced scans,in the late arterial phase(start delay 45-50 s) and in the portal venous phase(start delay 70-80 s).The MR examinations were performed using a 1.5T superconducting magnet,using Fast Imaging Employing Steady State Acquisition and T2-weighted fast-recovery fast-spin echo sequences in axial and coronal *** and MRI examinations were analysed for the presence of colonic abnormalities and associated ***:Segmental involvement was seen in 6 patients(85.71%),with a mean length of involvement of 412 mm(range 145.5-1000 mm).Wall thickness varied between 6 mm and 17.5 mm(mean 10.52 mm) upon CT examinations and from 5 to 15 mm(mean 8.8 mm) upon MR *** MRI appearance of the colonic wall varied over the time:TypeⅠappearance with a 3 layer sandwich sign was seen in 5 out of 12 examinations(41.66%),patients underwent MR within a mean of 36 h(ranging from 1 to 54 h) after the CT *** Ⅱ and Ⅲ appearance with a 2 layer sign,was seen in 4 examinations(33.33%),patients underwent MR within a mean of 420.5 h(ranging from 121 to 720 h) after the CT *** the remaining three MRI examinations,performed within a mean of 410 h(ranging from 99.5 to 720 h) the colonic wall appeared ***:MRI,only using precontrast images,may be used as a substitute for invasive procedures in diagnosis and follow-up of acute IC.

Thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation: Case presentation of a young man

Ectopic thymic tissue can be present in the thyroid gland and a carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation(CASTLE) may arise from such tissue. We are reported the case of a 26-year-old man with CASTLE, with cervical subcutaneous nodules relapse, who showed a good response to treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The problematic aspect of this case was the diagnosis; only on review were we able to make a final diagnosis. CASTLE is a very rare neoplasm. It is important to differentiate this cancer from others tumors such as primary or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck or squamous cell thyroid carcinoma, because the therapy and prognosis are *** is complicated and requires careful histological analysis(CD5- and P63-positive with presence of Hassall's corpuscles); unfortunately there is no gold standard treatment so, in this case, we administered a sandwich of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Focal Thyroid Uptake during <sup>18</sup>F-Choline PET/CT: A Case Report

Here we report the case of a 60-year-old patient previously affected by prostate cancer treated with prostatectomy. After surgery, the patient was scheduled for routine follow up examinations including biochemical and imaging evaluations. PSA testing evidenced a light, continuous increase in the course of the last four sampling. This finding calls for a biochemical recurrence. Thus the patient underwent a 18F-Fluorocholine (FCH) PET/CT to detect the possible sites of the relapse. FCH PET/CT did not disclose any focal uptake suggesting a metastatic spread. However, one focal uptake was noticed in the lower pole of the right thyroid lobe, corresponding to a hypodense nodule. Therefore, the patient was studied with 99 mTc thyroid scan and neck ultrasound. Both examinations had findings suspicious of a neoplasm. The fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) that was carried out to rule out a malignancy, gave a TIR2 result. FCH PET/CT may give thyroidal uptakes in benign lesions.

Cu(II) Extraction in Ionic Liquids and Chlorinated Solvents: Temperature Effect

Room temperature ionic liquids have been currently used in liquid/liquid extraction processes in order to substitute conventional organic solvents. In this paper, a series of chlorinated solvents and 1-alkyl-3-me- thylimidazolium-based ionic liquids were selected to study the extraction efficiency of a lipophilic polya- mine 1,1,7,7-tetraethyl-4-tetradecyldiethylenetriamine (TE14DT) towards the model ion Cu(II) in such dif-ferent media. The effect of temperature on the extraction efficiency was also investigated. The metal ion par-tition was found to be strongly dependent on both the nature of the solvent and on the working temperature. The viscosity of ionic liquids and the water content in ionic liquid were found to affect the extraction effi-ciency of TE14DT. The chemical nature of the cation of ionic liquids, and in particular the alkyl chain length on imidazolium ring, also seemed to be important in determining the efficiency of the extraction process. Finally, preliminary experiments on back-extraction of Cu(II) ions from ionic liquid also revealed interesting hints to the development of a continuous transport process.
