Quantitative extraction of chromium Ⅵ and Ⅲ from tanned leather: a comparative study of pretreatment methods

In this study,seven pretreatment methods for chromium speciation in tanned leather were evaluated:acidic miner‑alization,ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA)extraction,diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid(DTPA)extraction,alkaline extraction(NH 4 OH),ammonium nitrate extraction(NH 4 NO 3),water extraction,and phosphate buffer extrac‑*** mineralization permitted the decomposition of the organic matter and ensured the complete digestion of leathers,giving access to the total content of chromium in each sample using inductively coupled plasma‑atomic emission spectrometry(ICP‑AES).From all the extractant media tested,EDTA proved to be the most efficient,allowing the extraction of Cr(VI)and Cr(III)as a Cr(III)‑EDTA complex,*** validation is presented for EDTA extraction and direct *** the EDTA extraction,method detection limit(MDL)and method quantifica‑tion limit(MQL)for total Cr in leather were 3.4 ppb and 11.2 ppb(µg of total Cr per L of extraction solution),respec‑*** to the lack of leather certified reference materials(CRMs)for Cr(VI),accuracy was evaluated by spiking leather samples with a Cr(VI)*** spike recovery of EDTA microwave assisted extraction ranged from 91.0 to 108.6%.Interday precision was also evaluated and all variation coefficients were below 5%,for both mineralization and EDTA *** article provides an efficient procedure to extract quantitatively chromium from leather,while maintaining the speciation,which can be further followed by ion chromatography‑inductively coupled plasma‑mass spectrometry(IC‑ICP‑MS).

In the present work,a comparative study of analytical methods for the simultaneous and quantitative determination of trivalent and hexavalent chromium is *** the analysis by ion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry,two different columns were tested,as well as different mobile phases and different pH of the *** optimized analytical method permitted the separation of Cr(Ⅲ)and Cr(Ⅵ)using 75 mmol/L NH_(4)NO_(3)pH 3 as chromatographic *** method was validated and applied to real samples,allowing the determination of both species simultaneously,even when there is a huge difference of concentration between Cr(Ⅲ)and Cr(Ⅵ).Limit of detection and limit of quantification for Cr(Ⅲ)were found to be 0.016 and 0.054μg/L(0.3 and 1.1μg/kg),respectively,and for Cr(Ⅵ)0.13 and 0.43μg/L(7 and 22μg/kg),*** species interconversions were monitored through the use of chromium isotopic standards,which confirmed that the optimized methodology preserves chromium speciation during extraction and ***-transform ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry permitted the structure elucidation of the complex formed during ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid extraction.

Do the microorganisms from laboratory culture spent growth medium affect house dust mite fitness and microbiome composition?

The interaction of house dust mites(HDM)and microorganisms is the key factor in the survival of these mites in human-made *** growth medium(SPGM)provides the rest of the dict,along with dead mite bodies and *** represents a source of microorganisms for the recolonization of mite food and the mite digestive *** experiment was performed to observe how adding SPGM to the HDM diet affects HDM population growth,the microbiome composition and the microbial respiration in *** analyzed American house dust mite(Dermatophagoides farinae)and European house dust mite(Dermatophagoides pleronyssinus)originating from control diets and diets treated with an extract of SPGM from 1-and 3-month-old mite *** microbiome was described using 16S and 18S barcode *** composition of the bacterial and fiungal microbiomes differed between the HDM species,but the SPGM treatment influenced only the bacterial profile of *** the *** microbiome of specimens on SPGM-treated dicts compared to those of the control situation,the Lactobacillus profile decreased,while the Candinium,Staphylococ-cus,Acinetobacter,and Sphingomonas profiles *** addition of SPGM extract decreased the microbial respiration in the microcosms with and without mites in almost all *** SPGM did not influence the population growth of ***,but it had a variable effect on *** results indicated that the HDM are marginally influenced by the microorganisms in their feces.

Many countries are promoting biofuels as a substitute for scarce oil. This paper develops a dynamic model of land allocation between food and energy and shows how the model can be calibrated using standard optimization techniques. Some possible implications of the trade-offs between food and energy are discussed. Specifically, we show that the effect of mandates is mainly felt through increased land conversion, which increases indirect carbon emissions Crude oil prices do not decrease significantly because of leakages.

The use of wastewater analysis in forensic intelligence:drug consumption comparison between Sydney and different European cities

Wastewater analysis offers objective and complementary information to illicit drug agencies by monitoring patterns of illicit drug *** this study,wastewater samples from three different wastewater treatment plants in Sydney,Australia were collected in March *** targeted drugs were analysed and temporal and geographical analyses were performed to obtain a better understanding of the type and amount of illicit drugs consumed in Sydney in comparison with similar studies conducted around Australia and in *** the targeted drugs,methamphetamine was consumed the most,followed by cocaine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine(MDMA).Weekly patterns were observed where a peak during the weekend was *** geographical analysis showed differences between the regions *** observation may be related to socio-demographic *** comparison of our study to other data sources from Australia showed a high consumption of methamphetamine in Sydney and Western *** comparison between Sydney and different European cities revealed a difference in consumption,which is in line with traditional market *** information obtained through wastewater analysis provides complementary information regarding illicit drug consumption,the size,and the evolution of the illicit drug ***,ultimately,will assist authorities in making informed decisions.

Sendai Five Years on: Reflections on the Role of International Law in the Creation and Reduction of Disaster Risk

This article offers a critical examination of the position of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 within international law. It is argued that any interrogation into the relationship between international law and disaster risk reduction(DRR) must begin not with existing DRR laws and policies, but rather with an enquiry into the nature of disaster risk and the role of international law in its creation and reduction. It is demonstrated how, while areas such as international human rights law can be utilized to enforce obligations in support of DRR, other areas—in particular international investment law—actively work to undermine DRR efforts. In order for international law to be a productive tool in the reduction of disaster risk, international lawyers must engage with critical work in disaster studies and explore the role that international law has played, and can play, in creating and addressing hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacities.

Determination of Electron Collision Cross Sections Set for Tetramethysilane

A swarm analysis technique based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation is used to derive low energy electron collision cross sections for tetramethylsilane （TMS）. The calculated swarm parameters with this first available cross sections set is consistent with measured values of the swarm parameters. Calculations of transport parameters in mixtures of TMS with argon are also presented.
