Soybean Seed Co-Inoculation with Bradyrhizobiumspp. and Azospirillum brasilense: A New Biotechnological Tool to Improve Yield and Sustainability

Legume nodulation by rhizobia can supply crops with nitrogen and reduce environmental impacts caused by chemical fertilization. The soybean crop in Brazil is an impressive example of how biological N2 fixation can be employed with a plant species of high economic value. However, the development of more productive cultivars, along with the increasing global climatic changes demand agricultural practices to become more productive and yet more environmentally friendly. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are highly beneficial to agriculture worldwide, acting in plant nutrition, protection, and growth stimulation. Azospirillum is, certainly, the most employed PGPR in the world, but little is known about its interaction with rhizobia, when both are applied to legume seeds. We have evaluated the co-inoculation of bradyrhizobia and azospirilla on soybean seeds under different soil and climate conditions in Brazil. Our results demonstrated that co-inoculation is efficient and beneficial to the crop, and promotes yield increases without adding any chemical N fertilizers even in soils where established populations of soybean bradyrhizobia exist. The strategy of co-inoculation thus represents a new biotechnological tool to improve soybean yield without adding any chemical N fertilizers, thus contributing to current practices of sustainability in agriculture.

Biomarkers for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease: The challenge of XXI century

AD is the most common form of dementia among the aging population. The neuropathological alterations of AD are represented by the neurofibrillary tangles and extracellular amyloid plaques formation. These two hallmarks are routinely used as biomarkers for AD diagnosis and can allow the identification of the pathology in a late phase. The urgent need to develop probes for PET analysis that can be used in an early diagnosis of this disorder opened a new scenario in which new biomarkers involved in the first step of AD can be easily detected. Recently, an increasing number of studies indicated as new biomarkers P-gp, TLR4, MIR and free serum copper that are involved in the onset of AD. It has been extensively reported that a P-gp dysfunction in brain can be considered one of the causes of the ADaccumulation in brain parenchyma and that the up-regulation of inflammatory gene expression and inflammatory signaling due to MIR and TLR4 modulated the development and the progression of AD.

Direct OrgaNogenesis from Cotyledons in Cultivars of Citrus clementina Hort. Ex Tan

An efficient protocol to induce shoot buds regeneration in Citrus clementina cultivars (‘Monreal’, ‘SRA 63’ and ‘SRA 64’) by direct orgaNogenesis has been developed using cotyledons as explants. Cotyledons transversely cut in three segments and entire ones were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (1962) solidified medium containing vitamins, 500 mg l-1 malt extract, 50 g l-1 sucrose and supplemented with three different concentrations of BAP (8.8, 13.2 and 17.6 μM). In all three cultivars the entire cotyledons showed more shoot morphogenic potential than transversely cut ones and after 60 incubation days the optimum BAP concentration was 17.6 μM in ‘Monreal’ (50% ± 2.89% of frequency regeneration) and 13.2 μM in ‘SRA 63’ (33.33% ± 3.33%) and ‘SRA 64’ (25.93% ± 1.85%). In absence of BAP No mor-phogenesis occurred, demonstrating the absolute requirement of this hormone for shoots induction. The young shoots showed a regular growth in the culture tubes containing the basal medium without hormones, and the rooted plantlets survived after acclimatization. This protocol may find application in Citrus genetic improvement programs.

Gas Exchanges and Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Soybean under Water Restriction

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in soybean is vulnerable to drought;however, there are genotypic variations among soybean cultivars regarding the ability to keep BNF under moderate water restriction. The aim of this study was to evaluate parameters related to gas exchanges and regulation of BNF in soybean genotypes BNF drought-tolerant (R01-581F and R01-416F), or drought-susceptible (CD 215 and BRS 317), submitted to adequate water supply or restriction between 45 and 55 days after emergence. We searched for traits associated with tolerance/susceptibility to drought, which might be useful in the selection of drought-tolerant soybean genotypes. Plant biomass was not affected under water restriction, but the number and dry weight of nodules reduced by 33% and 12%, respectively, in the average of genotypes. Drought-tolerant genotypes were more effective in maintaining gas exchanges under water restriction. Under water restriction, all genotypes increased the concentration of ureides in nodules, but only the susceptible genotypes showed that in leaves. The maintenance of gas exchanges and N metabolism regulation under water restriction in genotype R01-581F suggests that these parameters may be used to characterize soybean genotypes that can be sources of drought tolerance in genetic breeding programs.

Nodulation Capacity of Argentinean Soybean (Glycine maxL. Merr) Cultivars Inoculated with Commercial Strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the nodulation potential of 31 Argentinean soybean commercial cultivars. Those with the highest nodulation capacity response developed twice the amount of nodules than the low nodulating ones, which is the variation contained in soybean genotypes. Furthermore, this was not due to bacterial promiscuity, since the response was independent of the bradyrhizobia strain inoculated. The ability of cultivars to develop a larger number and biomass of nodules was unrelated with the maturity group they belong to and also was not a response to quorum sensing effects. Our results suggest that breeding programs can be aimed at improving the nodulation capacity of soybean and that cultivars from different maturity groups can be a source of nodulation QTLs.

Quality of Soppressata salami from Pugliese Pigs as Affected by Rearing System

Twenty four male pigs were assigned to two groups of 12 each during the last fattening phase: one group was reared outdoor (OUT group) and fed on natural pasture, while the other group was reared indoor (IND group) and fed on commercial feedstuff. Meat was processed into Soppressata salami according to traditional protocol. Meat and Soppressata salami were analyzed for nutritional, textural and color parameters. Meat and Soppressata salami showed significantly higher proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in OUT than that in IND group. Ameliorated nutritional indexes in terms of n-6/n-3 ratio, and thrombogenic index were found both in meat and Soppressata salami in OUT group. Texture Profile Analysis showed lower values in the tested samples from OUT thanINDgroup. Lightness, redness, and chroma parameters were higher both in meat and Soppressata salami in OUT group;whereas hue parameter was lower in Soppressata salami from OUT pigs. Outdoor rearing improved fatty acid profile, nutritional indexes, color and mechanical properties of pork meat thanks to natural pasture, greater space allowance and physical exercise of animal during the fattening phase. Meat features strictly affected the quality of the Soppressata salami produced by using traditional protocol.
