Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Effects of Capybara Oil on Cardiac Remodeling of C57bl/6 Mice

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, and obesity and the metabolic syndrome are risk factors for its development. One of the therapies to reduce cardiovascular risk is the use of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In Brazil, a source of such acid is the oil extracted from the fat of the capybara. The objective of this work is to study the effects of the capybara oil on lipid and glucose metabolism, as well as its effects on the adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling. We assessed the effects of capybara oil treatment on body mass, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, systolic blood pressure, adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling, and performed an ultrastructural evaluation of the myocardium in C57Bl/6 mice treated with high-fat diet. Treatment with capybara oil reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, systolic blood pressure, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, and adipocyte diameter. In addition, cardiac remodeling was attenuated, preserving cardiomyocytes, increasing vascularization, reducing cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and the extracellular matrix, and preserving the morphological integrity of mitochondria. Capybara oil has several beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and metabolic system, and further studies are needed to better understand its role in the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Unsupervised learning of load signatures to estimate energy-related building features using surrogate modelling techniques

Characterization of an existing building’s energy-related features is critical to inform maintenance and retrofit ***,existing field-scale characterization methods tend to be labour intensive,invasive,and require high fidelity longitudinal data gathered through tightly regulated *** highlights the need for a low cost,scalable,and efficient screening *** paper puts forward a surrogate model-based approach to rapidly estimate energy-related building *** this end,EnergyPlus models for 12 midrise office archetypes,all with a rectangular footprint,are *** thousand variants of each archetype are generated by altering envelope,causal heat gain,and heating,ventilation,and air conditioning operation features.A unique load signature is derived for each variant’s heating and cooling energy *** parameters of the load signatures are clustered,then each cluster is associated with a set of plausible energy-related *** accuracy of the results was evaluated using five test buildings not seen by the *** method could effectively identify building features with reasonable accuracy and no significant degradation in performance across all 12 archetypes.

This paper presents a proposed low-noise and high-sensitivity Internet of Thing(IoT)system based on an M&NEMS *** IoT device consists of an M&NEMS resistive accelerometer associated with an electronic readout circuit,which is a silicon nanowire and a Continuous-Time(CT)△∑*** first integrator of the△∑ADC is based on a positive feedback DC-gain enhancement two-stage amplifier due to its high linearity and low-noise *** mitigate both the offset and 1/f noise,a suggested delay-time chopper negative-R stabilization technique is applied around the first integrator.A 65-nm CMOS process implements the CT△∑*** supply voltage of the CMOS circuit is 1.2-V while 0.96-mW is the power consumption and 0.1-mm^(2) is the silicon *** M&NEMS microphone and△∑ADC complete circuit are fabricated and *** a working frequency bandwidth of 20-kHz,the measurement results of the proposed IoT system reach a signal to noise ratio(SNR)of ***,it has a measured dynamic range(DR)of 108-dB and a measured signal to noise and distortion ratio(SNDR)of 101.3-dB.

NDRank: optimised parallel search for weather analogues

Global meteorology data are now widely used in various areas, but one of its applications, weather analogues, still require exhaustive searches on the whole historical data. We present two optimisations for the state-of-the-art weather analogue search algorithms: a parallelization and a heuristic search. The heuristic search (NDRank) limits of the final number of results and does initial searches on a lower resolution dataset to find candidates that, in the second phase, are locally validated. These optimisations were deployed in the Cloud and evaluated with ERA5 data from ECMWF. The proposed parallelization attained speedups close to optimal, and NDRank attains speedups higher than 4. NDRank can be applied to any parallel search, adding similar speedups. A substantial number of executions returned a set of analogues similar to the existing exhaustive search and most of the remaining results presented a numerical value difference lower than 0.1%. The results demonstrate that it is now possible to search for weather analogues in a faster way (even compared with parallel searches) with results with little to no error. Furthermore, NDRank can be applied to existing exhaustive searches, providing faster results with small reduction of the precision of the results.

A Use Case of Patent Classification Using Deep Learning with Transfer Learning

Purpose:Patent classification is one of the areas in Intellectual Property Analytics(IPA),and a growing use case since the number of patent applications has been increasing *** propose using machine learning algorithms to classify Portuguese patents and evaluate the performance of transfer learning methodologies to solve this ***/methodology/approach:We applied three different approaches in this ***,we used a dataset available by INPI to explore traditional machine learning algorithms and ensemble *** preprocessing data by applying TF-IDF,FastText and Doc2Vec,the models were evaluated by cross-validation in 5 *** a second approach,we used two different Neural Networks architectures,a Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)and a bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory(BiLSTM).Finally,we used pre-trained BERT,DistilBERT,and ULMFiT models in the third ***:BERTTimbau,a BERT architecture model pre-trained on a large Portuguese corpus,presented the best results for the task,even though with a performance of only 4%superior to a LinearSVC model using TF-IDF feature *** limitations:The dataset was highly imbalanced,as usual in patent applications,so the classes with the lowest samples were expected to present the worst *** result happened in some cases,especially in classes with less than 60 training *** implications:Patent classification is challenging because of the hierarchical classification system,the context overlap,and the underrepresentation of the ***,the final model presented an acceptable performance given the size of the dataset and the task *** model can support the decision and improve the time by proposing a category in the second level of ICP,which is one of the critical phases of the grant patent ***/value:To our knowledge,the proposed models were never implemented for Portuguese patent classification.

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBDs) are characterized by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and include Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s *** diseases are costly to health services,substantially reduce patients’ quality of life,and can lead to complications such as cancer and even *** include abdominal pain,stool bleeding,diarrhea,and weight *** treatment of these diseases is symptomatic,seeking disease *** intestine is colonized by several microorganisms,such as fungi,viruses,and bacteria,which constitute the intestinal microbiota(IM).IM bacteria promotes dietary fibers fermentation and produces short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs) that exert several beneficial effects on intestinal *** can bind to G protein-coupled receptors,such as GPR41 and GPR43,promoting improvements in the intestinal barrier,anti-inflammatory,and antioxidant ***,SCFAs could be a therapeutic tool for ***,the mechanisms involved in these beneficial effects of SCFAs remain poorly ***,this paper aims to provide a review addressing the main aspects of IBDs,and a more detailed sight of SCFAs,focusing on the main effects on different aspects of the intestine with an emphasis on IBDs.

Structural and optical properties of pillared Eu^(3+)-containing layered double hydroxides intercalated by 2-to 12-carbon aliphatic dicarboxylates

While the versatile composition of layered double hydroxides(LDHs)allows the introduction of almost any polyvalent cation in their structure,the exchangeable negatively charged ions intercalated between the plates increase their vast range of *** we report on the preparation and optical properties of pillared Eu^(3+)-substituted ZnAl LDHs intercalated by aliphatic dicarboxylates:-OOC-(CH_(2))_(n-2)-COO-.The basal distance in these materials is dependent on the size and packing of the intercalated *** varying the number(n)of carbon atoms in the aliphatic chain from 2 to 12,the interlayer gallery of these ZnAlEu LDHs is considerably expanded from 0.9 to 2.1 *** the interlayer gallery,the aliphatic dicarboxylates form a monolayer,with the aliphatic chain inclined by an angleα≈63°with the hydroxide *** carbon atom in the COO-group is 0.43 nm far from the metal plane,showing that these carboxylates are not grafted in the brucite-like *** LDHs are thermally stable up to around 150℃,after which dehydroxylation of the hydroxide layers is *** Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters were obtained and compared to the Eu^(3+)-containing complexes with the same ligand series indicating a more symmetrical and less polarizable chemical environment around the rare earth ion.
