Drug Therapeutic in the Subacute and Chronic Phase of Chikungunya Virus Infection

Background: Chikungunya fever is an infectious disease that can evolve to a subacute or chronic condition, with changes in the daily activities of patients. Drugs that aim to reduce these symptoms are used, such as corticoids (acute phase) and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (chronic phase). Objective: To evaluate the clinical response to drug therapy in the subacute and chronic phase of infection by the Chikungunya virus. Methodology: A prospective and a retrospective study with patients with subacute and chronic Chikungunya infection, out at the infection and autoimmunity outpatient clinic at the Nucleus of Tropical Medicine, from January 2016 to December 2019, in the morning of Thursdays. The patient was observed in the Baseline, first and second return, and drugs were introduced according to the stage of the disease with subsequent reassessment. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was applied to all evaluation moments. Results: 101 patients were evaluated, and arthralgia was the predominant symptom in the three evaluated moments. According to the VAS, moderate baseline pain was observed in 58.1% and 58.6% of subacute and chronic cases, respectively. On the first return, moderate pain still predominated in 46.2% in subacute cases and 43% in chronic cases. In the second visit, all patients were in the chronic phase of the disease, 43.8% had VAS with no pain. Regarding the number of compromised joints in the Baseline, polyarticular involvement predominated in both subacute (79%) and chronic (74.1%) cases, in the first return, oligoarticular involvement predominated in 53.8% of subacute cases and 54.7% in chronic cases and, the second return, 40.6% of the patients had oligoarticular involvement and 43.8% had no joint involvement. Sensors Applied to Plant Breeding: Leaf Reflectance Indices (LRIs) and Resistance to Anthracnose in Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum

The present work investigated the efficiency of leaf reflectance indices in the identification of Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum resistant to anthracnose in the fruit. Twenty-five F5:6 families originating from contrasting parents were assessed;the parents were accession UENF 2285 (susceptible to anthracnose) and accession UENF 1381, a hot pepper resistant to anthracnose in the fruit. The experiment was carried out in an experimental field in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between May and October of 2021. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, with three replications and five plants per plot. Fifteen LRIs were estimated using a CI-710 portable mini leaf spectrometer. The assessments covered all plant growth after flowering, and a total of six assessments were performed at 15-days intervals, beginning at 35 and ending 120 days after flowering (DAFs). Analysis of variance in a split-plot scheme was performed, as were tests of mean groupings and principal components analysis (PCA). The best period for evaluating leaf reflectance indices in C. annuum var. annuum is 120 days after flowering. The leaf reflectance indices PRI, CNDVI and Ctr2 stood out as effective in distinguishing between resistant and susceptible genotypes.

Protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon region

Background:Studies investigating the nutritional status of patients with leprosy and plantar ulcers are ***,the objective of this study was to describe the protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon ***:A case record form was created for 75 patients with leprosy(31 with plantar ulcers and 44 without plantar ulcers)with the following data:sociodemographic characteristics,clinical form of leprosy,presence or absence of plantar ulcers,and nutritional assessment using anthropometry consisting of the measurement of body mass index,arm circumference,arm muscle circumference,and triceps *** of blood albumin,transferrin,and C-reactive protein(CRP)were also *** regarding protein intake were obtained using a Food Frequency ***:Plantar ulcers occurred more frequently in male patients(67.7%),patients aged 40-49 years(mean±SD:47.3±8.0 years),and patients receiving 300 or 600 USD(71.0%).The mean weight and height of patients were 71.6±11.4 kg and 1.62±0.1 m,*** levels of CRP were detected in 51.6%of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers and only 9.1%of patients without plantar ulcers(P<0.001).Nutritional depletion of transferrin was observed in 14.3%of patients with paucibacillary leprosy and 44.3%of patients with multibacillary leprosy(P=0.0447).Most patients had normal levels of serum albumin(74.2%with plantar ulcers and 77.3%without plantar ulcers).Conclusions:Most leprosy patients with plantar ulcers have normal levels of serum albumin and transferrin and high CRP levels,which indicates the presence of an inflammatory *** findings suggest the need to monitor patients with leprosy to prevent the occurrence of plantar ulcers and to provide adequate treatment for patients with existing plantar ulcers.

Microsatellites and the Polyploid Guarana Plant:Diversity under a Sea of Alleles

Repeat blocks, microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) can produce good co-dominant molecular markers for genetic diversity analysis and the determination of self-pollination rates in progenies originating from open pollination of selected genotypes. The enrichment of guarana genomic libraries was underway when it was confirmed that we are working with a complex polyploid species with 210 chromosomes. The probes (CA)12, (CT)12 and (TC)14 were used to finish the enrichment of four libraries for repeat blocks and the screening of a databank of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from guarana seeded-fruits was accomplished as well. Fifteen clonal cultivars were genotyped with three replicas at 10 out of 27 identified loci using the 59 alleles that passed the reproducibility criterion. A large number of short repeat blocks were identified and this was considered to be a consequence of the recent polyploidization event. However, blocks with eight or more repeats ideal for genotyping were scarce. Annealing of most probes to short blocks by partial complementarity could explain the scarcity of longer blocks in genomic libraries but cannot explain why they were rare in the ESTs. Due to the complexity of the genotypes, alleles were treated as dominant traits. ESTs harboring repeat blocks had the functional annotation renewed. Locus GRN07 is inserted in a homologue of the MOTHER OF FLOWERING LOCUS T AND TFL1 (MFT), in which 3’-UTR displays clear post-transcriptional regulatory features. MFT and its variants are probably involved in the determination of seed germination and embryo growth characteristics. Other accessed loci can be involved in plant architecture and defense reactions. It was concluded that the alleles described in the present work can be used to distinguish guarana cultivars and possibly to analyze segregation using the progenies of controlled pollinations between divergent genitors. Teletandem as a Way of Enhancing Language Learning Between Brazilian and German Students

This paper aims at investigating the teletandem learning interactions between a group of Brazilian students from Instituto Federal de Educagao, Ciencia e Tecnologia do Estado de Goias, Brazil, and a group of foreign students from two German universities. In this study, the Brazilian students helped their foreign partners with Portuguese learning and were helped by them in the English learning. The participants used a synchronous computer software called Openmeetings and also an electronic dictionary as a complementary tool. Adopting a qualitative perspective in the data collection and analysis, this case study was conducted in the second semester of 2010. The data were collected by means of conversation sessions through Openmeetings and were analyzed in the light of studies on sociocultural theory as well as on tandem/teletandem language learning researches. The data analyses showed that the participants used English as an anchoring language to work with Portuguese and English itself, and German was introduced in the teletandem sessions. The data also showed that the whiteboard and the electronic dictionary were used as complementary resources to the use of audio and video for the language learning process the participants engaged in.

Sexual Diversity and Homophobia in Health Care Services: Perceptions of Homosexual and Bisexual Population in the Cross-Cultural Theory

The provision of care by health professionals seems to be related to cultural patterns in which these workers are inserted. The relationship between culture and care becomes a challenge for the provision of health care to homosexual and bisexual population. Thus, this study aimed to identify the perception of Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders in relation to the care received from health professionals, in the light of Cross-Cultural Theory. This is a qualitative, ethnographic study, conducted with 30 members of sexual minorities in Juazeiro do Norte, Brazil. The data analysis lead to the elaboration of five categories based on of the Theory of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality. The participants emphasized the constant violation of their rights to universal and equitable access to the National Health System, stating that they have suffered from prejudice and exclusion, as result of a heteronormative culture. They highlighted that homophobia and dehumanization of care have a strong relation to sexual orientation. The transvestites are the most prone to humiliation and pejorative attitudes of professionals and such condition is a barrier to accessing services.

Breast cancer is a heterogeneous and complex disease with different situations of threat to their patients, which can cause psychological discomfort, anxiety and a depressed state in women. The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of nursing to psychological repercussions on living with breast cancer. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study with qualitative characteristics. It was conducted with professional nurses in Basic Health Units (UBS) in the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte-CE, Northeast of Brazil, located in the region of Cariri. The study began to be developed after the approval of the Research Ethics Committee, CAAE: 50809315.8. 0000.5624. Data collection occurred through a semi-structured interview. For the interpretation of the results, the technique of content analysis was used. The results showed that nurses realize that emotional support, care and assistance in coping, improve the construction of a good performance of the professional nurse. However, it is possible to realize the need for information and qualified assistance by multidisciplinary team to these patients and even their family members. It was identified as difficulty in assisting the denial of patient to start the treatment, but the facility is in the intimacy that the professional nurse can engage with the customer. It highlighted the care through dialogue and health education. And, finally, the nurse is aware of such importance of his/her role when supporting the patient. Thus, the improvement of professional assistance was evidenced as regards emotional support, reception, qualified listening, health education measures leading to self-knowledge, self-esteem and acceptance of the disease and the creation of bonds with the patients.

Correlation between therapy and lipid profile of leprosy patients:is there a higher risk for developing cardiovascular diseases after treatment?

Background:The impact of leprosy reduces health-related quality of life of affected patients,interfering with different factors such as *** study investigated the lipid profile,nutritional status,and risk for cardiovascular disease(CVD)in patients who underwent leprosy treatment in ***:Eighty-four adult patients of both genders ranging in age from 20 to 60 years and diagnosed with paucibacillary(PB)or multibacillary(MB)leprosy were selected after undergoing multidrug *** following data were collected:sociodemographic and clinical data;food intake;anthropometric measures(weight,height,and waist circumference);and lipid profile components(total cholesterol,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol[HDL-c],low-density lipoprotein cholesterol[LDL-c],and triglycerides).Results:Among the study population,there was a predominance of males(65.48%)aged 50 to 60 years,patients with an income of 248-496 American dollars(63.10%),patients who completed elementary school(65.48%),inactive patients(76.19%),non-smokers(46.43%),and non-drinking patients(69.05%).The levels(mean±standard deviation)of total cholesterol were 193.8±29.4 mg/dL in the PB form and 203.5±41.7 mg/dL in the MB *** mean LDL-c was 116.9±22.7 mg/dL in PB patients and 121±31.3 mg/dL in MB *** triglyceride levels were 123.4±45.2 mg/dL in the PB form and 147.4±88.9 mg/dL in the MB *** evaluation of nutritional status showed that 41.67%of the patients were eutrophic,while 55.96%had excess *** intake was significantly associated with HDL-c in male patients(P=0.0264)and with triglycerides in patients above the ideal weight(P=0.0049).Conclusions:The risk of acquiring CVDs was observed to be high due to patients’excess weight and increased waist *** study will guide clinicians in the adequate treatment of patients with leprosy in order to avoid adverse cardiovascular events.

Objective: To understand, based on the life narratives of refugee women, food and nutritional security. Method: Qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study, Narratives of life method, by Daniel Bertaux. Conducted with 11 participants, refugee women residing in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Results: The meanings and feelings evidenced in the life narratives of refugee women expressed the insecurities and weaknesses with food in the resettlement. Final Considerations: Given the meanings and feelings regarding food in the refuge, it is expected that the present study will contribute to the elaboration of new action plans and intersectoral public policies of agile action to meet the demands of the refugee population, in the attempt to mitigate starvation, poverty, social differences and the compromised health status of the refugee population.
