What is the value of eucalyptus monocultures for the biodiversity of the Atlantic forest? A multitaxa study in southern Bahia, Brazil

Eucalyptus plantations are increasing in Brazil, frequently replacing pastures, but there is still scarce information about its capacity to maintain the fauna of neighbor forest remnants. In this study, we compared descriptors of the communities of leaf litter organisms （lizards, anurans, myriapods, arachnids, orthopterans, coleopterans, and ants） between a large remnant of primary Atlantic Forest and an adjacent eucalyptus monoculture （phase 1）. Then, we compared the same descriptors for leaf litter lizards and anurans, Euglossini bees, and frugivorous butterflies among the largest remnant, small remnants at intermediate regeneration stage, and eucalyptus monocultures that were not adjacent to the largest remnant （phase 2）. Monocultures were sampled immediately before logging. In phase 1, we detected significant differences in structure between the forest and the monoculture in six out of seven communities sampled. Ca. 81% of the species of the landscape were recorded in the forest, but only 54% of these were found also in the monoculture. In phase 2, the structure of two out of four forest communities was significantly different from the structure of small remnants and monocultures. On average, 76% of the species found in the whole landscape were sampled in the forest. Out of this subset, on average 74% of the species were also sampled in small remnants and 68% in monocultures. Findings of the present study point out a moderate capacity of eucalyptus monocultures to harbor species of the forest fauna even when fully grown but highlights the opportunity that they might offer for increasing connectivity in anthropogenic forest landscapes depending on their management.

Epidural Abscess Related to Brucellar Spondylodiscitis Diagnosis by Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR)

The localized forms of brucellosis, particularly osteoarticular, by their symptomatology usually nonspecific, still continue to be a diagnosis challenge, being fundamental to raise a high degree of suspicion based on a careful epidemiological history. The authors describe the case of a 69 year old farmer that was admitted due to an insidious lower back pain with irradiation to the left lower limb accompanied by nocturnal sweating, anorexia and weight loss. The imaging studies revealed a spondylodiscitis in L3-L4 with an associated epidural abscess. The diagnosis of brucellosis was brought on by the occupational exposure to sheep and was confirmed by a positive PCR to Brucella in the product gathered by aspiration from the epidural abscess and also by the serology (ELISA and Rose Bengal). Despite the initial therapy with doxycycline, rifampicin and gentamycin (the last one for 1 week), the patient had a clinical and imagiologic worsening, determining surgical decompression. After the surgery, antiobiotherapy with doxycyline and rifampicin was maintained and a cycle of gentamicin was started, this time for a month, with a favorable clinical evolution.

Impact of Drug-Drug Interaction between CDK4/6 Inhibitors and Proton Pump Inhibitors on Survival Outcomes in the Treatment of Metastatic Breast Cancer—Real World Data from a Portuguese Center

Introduction: Proton pump inhibitors (PPi) are widely prescribed, including in patients undergoing treatment for advanced breast cancer (ABC). Due to the pharmacokinetic characteristics of the CDK4/6 inhibitor (Ci) palbociclib a drug interaction with PPi was hypothesized. It was shown in a retrospective study that this association was an independent predictive factor for worse progression-free survival (PFS). Objective: To verify the impact of concomitant administration of PPi with Ci on overall survival (OS) and PFS. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients treated with Ci for HR+HER2-ABC in the period from Feb/2017 to Aug/2020. SPSS software was used for data processing. Univariate analysis was done by the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test, and multivariate analysis by COX regression. P-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 80 patients were included. The median age at diagnosis of ABC was 56 years (25 - 75). Treatment with Ci was 1st line for ABC in 68.8%. Choice of Ci was palbociclib in 73.8% (n = 59) and ribociclib in 26.3% (n = 21). The hormone partner was a nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor in 45.0%, and fulvestrant in 55.0% of cases. 37.5% of patients were on PPi, and 70.0% of them were during the entire treatment (23.3% omeprazole, 73.4% pantoprazole, 3.3% others). Patients taking concomitant PPi and Ci had lower OS (OS-3 years 42.6% vs. 63.4%, p = 0.254) and PFS (PFS med 15 m. vs. 21 m., p = 0.733), although with no statistically significant difference. Discussion: In the sample, there was a numerical difference, without the statistical significance in the use of PPi in the survival of patients under Ci. This difference could be more evident with a longer follow-up and a larger sample size. This study intends to alert to the growing importance of checking for drug interactions. The study of damage in rotating machineries is of fundamental interest in the fields of machine and structure design. A rotating system, supported by bearings and under some dynamic conditions, can generate a variety of problems that are encountered in many different types of rotating machines. One of these problems is the unbalance due to non-homogeneous mass distribution along the shaft. One of the techniques which are widespread today is the identification of parameters and excitation forces that may well followed by monitoring the evolution and change of possible variations of these parameters. Although several methods for the identification of unbalance excitation force are available in the literature, none of them can be considered unrestricted to be applied for all rotating systems. In this study, two methodologies to identify unknown excitations, such as unbalance, have been proposed. This project refers to the analysis of unbalanced forces from displacement parameters and speed by using methods of identification by Fourier series and Legendre polynomials together with the finite element method, state observers in reasons of the problem of absence of signs of rotational displacement, bandpass filter were used to noise suppression of the data collected from the experimental part, Quasi-Newton method to minimize a function in which the bearing stiffness and its damping are unknowns, and also the experimental verification of the methodology, using for this system owned by a rotary mechanical vibrations of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Faculty of Engineering, campus of llha Solteira.

AIM:To quantify and compare longitudinal thickness changes of the ganglion cell complex(GCC)and the choroid in patients with different patterns of age-related macular degeneration(AMD)***:Retrospective cohort analysis of anonymized data from participants aged 50y or more and diagnosed with early/intermediate AMD in at least one eye(with no evidence of advanced AMD).A total of 64 participants were included from the Instituto de Retina de Lisboa(IRL)study(IPL/2022/MetAllAMD_ESTeSL)and divided into 4 groups according to the Rotterdam classification for *** domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)was used to assess and quantify GCC and choroid thickness at two time points(first visit vs last visit)with a minimum interval of ***:In the GCC inner ring,a thinner thickness(P=0.001)was observed in the atrophic AMD group(51.3±21.4μm)compared to the early AMD(84.3±11.5μm),intermediate AMD(77.6±16.1μm)and neovascular AMD(88.9±16.3μm)*** thickness quantification showed a generalized reduction in the central circle(P=0.002)and inner ring(P=0.001).Slight reductions in retinal thickness were more accentuated in the inner ring in the atrophic AMD(-13%;P<0.01).CONCLUSION:The variation of the analyzed structures could be an indicator of risk of progression with neurodegenerative(GCC)or vascular(choroid)pattern in the intermediate and atrophic *** quantification of both structures can provide important information about the risk of disease progression in the early and intermediate stages but also for the evolution pattern into late stages(atrophic or neovascular).

Neurodegenerative diseases are a major public health challenge,mainly affecting the elderly population and compromising their cognitive,sensory,and motor ***,available therapies focus on alleviating symptoms and slowing the progression of these conditions,but they do not yet offer a definitive *** this scenario,terpenes emerge as promising natural alternatives due to their neuroprotective *** compounds can reduce the formation of protein aggregates,neutralize free radicals,and inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes,which are crucial factors in the development of neurodegenerative *** addition,terpenes also play an important role in the regulation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix,a key target for improving neuronal *** such as linalool,pinene,and eugenol,among others,have potential therapeutic effects by modulating inflammatory and oxidative stress processes,the main factors that contribute to the progression of these *** suggest that these compounds act on signaling pathways that regulate the extracellular matrix,improving neuronal integrity and,consequently,cognitive and motor *** work aims to review the potential of terpenes in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders,with emphasis on their ability to regulate oxidative stress and inflammation,as well as to remodel the extracellular *** interaction between these mechanisms points to the promising use of terpenes as an innovative and natural therapeutic approach to combat these diseases.

Sorption has been proposed as a promising approach towards a sustainable water decontamination and recently to the recycling of rare earth elements(REE).Although living seaweed have been shown to be capable of removing REE from contaminated solutions,no studies have yet compared the effects of REE competition on sorption onto different groups of *** effects were analysed in the present study by exposing six living seaweeds(Ulva lactuca,Ulva intestinalis,Fucus spiralis,Fucus vesiculosus,Gracilaria *** Osmundea pinnatifida)(3 g/L,fresh weight) to mono-element and multi-element solutions of Y,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb and Dy(1 μmol/L).Results show a preference towards light REE in mono-element solutions,which is reduced when in competition with other *** competitive effect is less pronounced in heavy REE indicating that these are still able to bind to the macroalgae despite the presence of competing *** to water content(%),seaweed specific surface area(cm^(2)/g) shows to be an important factor in the sorption of REE,since larger surface area is associated with higher removal and larger competitive effect.
