The Effectiveness of Diamel in the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetic Patients Receiving Insulin Therapy: A Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trial

Aims/Introduction: Effectiveness of Diamel? on the biochemical variables: fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and glycosylated haemoglobin [HbA1c] in type-2 diabetic patients receiving insulin terapy. Diamel is a natural product composed of trace elements: amino acids, vitamins, cranberry extract, and lettuce extract that have been activated by means of a magnetization process. Materials and methods: Randomized, doubleblind, comparator-controlled clinical trial. A central randomization centre used computer generated tables to allocate treatments. 116 patients suffering from type-2 diabetes mellitus treated with insulin at the Diabetes Care Centre in Pinar del rio (Cuba), were recruited and randomly. The subjects were separated into two groups: Group A (n = 59), who were administered Diamel and Group B (n = 57) using placebo. The clinical and biochemical variables were assessed for 24 weeks. Results: Two subjects were excluded from the Diamel treatment group during the clinical trial. From the statistical point of view, a significant drop in the levels of the baseline glucose, postprandial glucose, glycated haemoglobin, and triglycerides was observed in the group taking Diamel (Group A). There was observed an increase in insulin requirements and in waist circumference in the subjects of Group B There was not reported any severe or serious adverse reactions during this clinical trial. Conclusion: Diamel (nutritional supplement) together with the administration of insulin in type-2 diabetic patients is useful to optimize the biochemical variables (baseline and postprandial glucose, Hb A1C, plus triglycerides), as well as to prevent the increase of insulin requirements at medium-term.

TLR2 and TLR4 polymorphisms influence m RNA and protein expression in colorectal cancer

AIM: To evaluate the effect of promoter region polymorphisms of toll-like receptor(TLR)2-196 to-174 del and TLR4-1607T/C(rs10759932) on m RNA and protein expression in tumor tissue and of TLR4+896A/G(rs4986790) on colorectal cancer(CRC) ***: The TLR2-196 to-174 del polymorphism was investigated using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and the TLR4-1607T/C and TLR4+896A/G by PCR-restriction fragment length p o l y m o r p h i s m( R F L P). W e g e n o t y p e d 4 3 4 D N A samples from 194 CRC patients and 240 healthy individuals. The m RNA relative quantification(RQ) was performed in 40 tumor tissue samples by quantitative PCR Taq Man assay, using specific probes for TLR2 and TLR4 genes, and ACTB and GAPDH reference geneswere used as endogenous controls. Protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry with specific primary ***: No association was found for TLR4-1607T/C and TLR4+896A/G by three statistical models(logadditive, dominant and recessive). However, based on dominant and log-additive models, the polymorphic variant TLR2-196 to-174 del was associated with increased CRC risk [dominant: odds ratio(OR) = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.03-2.89; P = 0.038 and log-additive: OR =1.59, 95%CI: 1.02-2.48; P = 0.039]. TLR2 m RNA expression was increased in tumor tissue(RQ = 2.36) when compared to adjacent normal tissue(RQ = 1; P del variant carriers showed m RNA relative expression 2.19 times higher than wild-genotype carriers. Optimization of the Production of Biogas in Anaerobic Digestion by the Addition of Hydrolytic Microorganisms

It is well known that fossil fuels are one of the major pollutants that contribute to climate change and there is a need to develop alternatives to their *** option is the use of a renewable fuel such as biogas obtained from the breaking down of organic matter in the anaerobic digestion *** biogas is cleaned up to a certain quality,it can substitute the use of natural ***,this slow process requires optimization to increase the amount of *** are chemical,physical and biological treatments for organic matter to increase the amount and quality of *** the former research,a biological treatment was tested by adding a selection of microorganisms that showed hydrolytic activity to an anaerobic digester for its ***,a selection of microorganisms with the ability to grow in fresh sewage sludge as only nutrient was ***,the lipolytic,cellulolytic and PA(Proteolytic Activity)of microorganisms was tested using selective growth ***,10 samples with the greatest hydrolytic activity were used to evaluate their effects in the increasing of biogas production in the anaerobic *** results showed that 83%of the microorganisms with the ability to grow in sewage sludge were proteolytic,while the percentage of lipolytic and cellulolytic microorganisms was ***,it was found that proteolytic microorganisms are the ones that increase biogas yield in a maximum of 80%with a COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand)reduction of 58%.

On the north coast of present-day Peru, between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, prospered approximately between 1000 BC and 1375 AD, several relevant cultures: Chavín (1000-200 BC), Vicús and Frías (200 BC - 300 AD), Moche (400 BC-700 AD), Sicán (700-1375 AD). These cultures are interconnected and characterized by a high metallurgical ability, demonstrated by the presence of beautiful artifacts on gold, silver and copper alloys. More than hundred metal artefacts from these cultures were analyzed with a portable equipment which uses the non-destructive and non-invasive technique of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). Following objects were analyzed: (1) gold, silver and copper objects from the Chavín culture (Museo Municipal of Piura and and Museo Enrico Poli in Lima); (2) gold and silver objects from the Vicús and Frías cultures (Museo Municipal of Piura); (3) gold, silver and copper objects from the Moche culture ("Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán", "Museo de Sitio de Huaca Rajada" in Lambayeque and Museo Enrico Poli in Lima); (4) gold, silver and copper objects from the Sicán culture (Museum of Sicán, Ferra?afe). Portable equipments were employed, mainly composed of a small size X-ray tube and a thermoelectrically cooled, small size, Si-PIN or Si-drift X-ray detectors. The main characteristics of the EDXRF-technique is of being non destructive and multi-elemental. Standard samples of gold and silver alloys were employed for calibration and quantitative analysis. The aims of this campaign of analysis were: (1) to analyze a large number of objects; (2) to differentiate gold, gilded copper and tumbaga (this last being a poor gold alloy enriched at the surface by depletion gilding); (3) to correlate, when possible, composition of analyzed alloys to the specific culture; (4) to determine a possible evolution of metallurgy; (5) to better determine characteristics and beginning time of tumbaga production.
