Individual factors related to chronic condition in Portuguese adolescents: Highlights from the HBSC/WHO study

Background: Adolescence includes a period (10 to 19 years) of profound biopsychosocial changes, constituting potentially difficult challenges, which may become more pronounced in the presence of a chronic condition and its limitations. Responses are not homogeneous and can be quite variable, depending on various specific individual factors. Research comparing adolescents with or without chronic illness, or comparing across different conditions, has been contradictory, not confirming a direct relationship between the degree of suffering and the chronic condition. Objective: To characterize and assess the impact of 1) having a chronic condition (CC) and 2) how CC affects school participation;and its association with life satisfaction and perception of wellness, controlling for demographic factors: age, gender and family socioeconomic status (SES). Methods: 5050 Portuguese adolescents with an average age of 14 years participated in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children/WHO (HBSC). Results: The majority of the adolescents with CC reported that their conditions did not affect school participation. Adolescents with CC who indicated that CC affected school participation felt more frequently unwell and presented lower life satisfaction. Being a boy, younger and having high family socio economic status (SES) were identified as predictors of higher life satisfaction;on the other hand, being a girl, older, having lower SES, living with CC and feeling that CC affects school participation are predictors for feeling more frequently unwell. Conclusions: These adolescents showed an increased vulnerability, presenting internalized symptoms and lower life satisfaction. Furthermore, when there was simultaneous occurrence of living with CC and that CC affected school participation, the impact was even higher. Thus, it is crucial that future interventions should include the identified predictors, combined with “listen to the voice” of adolescents, throughout the adaptation proces

Characterization and Biological Activities of Protein-Bound Polysaccharides Produced by Cultures of Pleurotus ostreatus

Several species of mushrooms, as Pleurotus ostreatus, have been valued as edible and medicinal resources. These mushrooms may be an important source of polysaccharides with medicinal properties as antioxidant, antitumoral, antimicrobial and immunological properties. The aim of this work was to produce and to evaluate the biological properties of protein-bound polysaccharide complexes, extra intracellular （E-PPS and I-PPS）, extracted from P. ostreatus cultures, using agricultural sunflower wastes as carbon source. Three main compounds in the E-PPS and four main compounds in the I-PPS were identified by SEC-UV-RI-HPLC. These complexes of P. ostreatus present no toxicity in Artemia salina cultures, after 24 h of incubation. Antioxidant properties of the complexes were evaluated by radical scavenging activity using DPPH method and lipid peroxidation inhibition capacity, determined by erytbsocytes hemolysis. Additionally, E-PPS and I-PPS extracts revealed capacity to mimetize superoxide dismutase and catalase enzymatic activities. The hepatoprotector effect of E-PPS extracts in Wistar rats was evaluated by AST, ALT, ALP and y-GT activities, showing capacity to reduce the liver damage induced by ethanol-administration. This hepatoprotective effect is equivalent to that observed by silymarin, a standard drug. Our results suggests that the extracts of E-PPS and I-PPS produced by P. ostreatus cultures, using agricultural sunflower wastes as main carbon source, can be used as an important source of bioactive compounds with potential medicinal value.

Sterilization Efficacy of Demolizer Technology for Onsite Treatment of Sharps and Other Regulated Medical Waste against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans,Mycobacterium phleiand Bacillus subtilisSpores

This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of the Demolizer? technology for the on-site sterilization of low vo-lumes of regulated medical waste. The objective was to demonstrate a minimum of 6 log10 reduction of the dry heat sterilization process applied by the Demolizer? II system for the representative organisms, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Mycobacterium phlei and Bacillus subtilis spores (formerly Bacillus subtilis) on simulated medical waste consistent with numerous regulatory standards for medical waste treatment. The system cycle was heat treatment at a minimum temperature of 350?F and held at or above this temperature for a minimum of 90 minutes. Upon completion of treatment, there was no evidence of growth in the bacterial species after treatment. Given the minimum detection level of 4 CFU/ml, the Demolizer? II system demonstrated a minimum sterilization efficacy of 6.6 log10 for both S. aureus and E. coli as representative gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria species. Candida albicans (6.7 log10 CFU/ml), Mycobacterium phlei (9.0 log10 CFU/ml) and Bacillus subtilis (6.3 log10 CFU/ml) were completely eliminated after sterilizing representative medical waste in the Demolizer? II system for 90 minutes at a minimum temperature of 350?F. Also, the Demolizer? II exceeded typical recognized standards for medical waste treatment of a 6 log10 reduction of Mycobacteria and a 4 log10 reduction of the appropriate Bacillus endospore.

Towards the Recovery of By-Product Metals from Mine Wastes:An X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study on the Binding State of Rhenium in Debris from a Centennial Iberian Pyrite Belt Mine

Rhenium is a very scarce element, occurring in the Earth's crust mainly carried by molybdenite (MoS2). Due to a very low availability comparative to actual industrial demand, rhenium is nowadays one of the most expensive mineral commodities and an increased interest is focused on ex- ploring residues resulting from a long-term mining, particularly of sulphide ore deposits. It is therefore noteworthy to assign the presence of rhenium (in a concentration up to 3 ppm) in the waste materials from the old sulphur factory at the abandoned mine of Sao Domingos (Iberian Pyrite Belt, Southeast Portugal), exploited since the Roman occupation of Iberia. Aiming at a potential sustainable recovery of rhenium as a by-product, X-ray near-edge absorption spectroscopy (XANES) was applied to clarify the Re-binding and mode of occurrence by comparing Re L3-edge XANES spectra obtained from mine waste samples (previously fully characterized by X-ray laboratory techniques) with similar spectra collected from Re-rich molybdenites (Mo1-xRexS2) and from Re-O model compounds configuring various valences and coordination environments of rhenium ions. Obtained results are commented, ruling out a possible Re-S binding and rather conforming with the binding of rhenium to oxygen in the analysed mine waste materials.

In the last two decades, great efforts have been made in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer(m CRC) due to the approval of new target agents for cytotoxic drugs. Unfortunately, a large percentage of patients present with metastasis at the time of diagnosis or relapse after a few months. The complex molecular heterogeneity of this disease is not completely understood; to date, there is a lack of predictive biomarkers that can be used to select subsets of patients who may respond to target drugs. Only the RAS-mutation status is used to predict resistance to anti-epidermal growth factor receptor agents in patients with m CRC. In this review, we describe approved targeted therapies for the management of metastatic m CRC and discuss new candidate targets on the horizon.

Restoration of kidney tubular epithelium following sublethal injury sequentially involves partial epithelial–mesenchymal transition(pEMT),proliferation,and further redifferentiation into specialized tubule epithelial cells(TECs).Because the immunosuppressant cyclosporine-A produces pEMT in TECs and inhibits the peptidyl-prolyl isomerase(PPIase)activity of cyclophilin(Cyp)proteins,we hypothesized that cyclophilins could regulate TEC *** we demonstrate that in cultured TECs,CypA silencing triggers loss of epithelial features and enhances transforming growth factorβ(TGFβ)-induced EMT in association with upregulation of epithelial repressors Slug and *** pro-epithelial action of CypA relies on its PPIase *** contrast,CypB emerges as an epithelial repressor,because CypB silencing promotes epithelial differentiation,prevents TGFβ-induced EMT,and induces tubular structures in 3D *** addition,in the kidneys of CypB knockout mice subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction,inflammatory and pro-fibrotic events were *** silencing/knockout leads to Slug,but not Snail,*** support of Slug expression depends on its endoplasmic reticulum location,where it interacts with calreticulin,a calcium-buffering chaperone related to Slug *** CypB silencing reduces ionomycin-induced calcium release and Slug upregulation,we suggest that Slug expression may rely on CypB modulation of calreticulin-dependent calcium *** conclusion,this work uncovers new roles for CypA and CypB in modulating TEC plasticity and identifies CypB as a druggable target potentially relevant in promoting kidney repair.

Oxfendazole as successful treatment of Taenia hydatigena metacestodes in naturally infected pigs

The efficacy of oxfendazole(OFZ) on Taenia hydatigena metacestodes, also called Cysticercus tenuicollis(C. tenuicollis), was studied in 648 raising pigs. This study was performed in Tumbes Department in Peru, an endemic area for cysticercosis. Pigs were randomized in two groups; untreated group(n = 142) did not receive any treatment and treated group(n = 506) received OFZ treatment at a single dose of 30 mg/kg body *** months after treatment, the pigs were necropsied. The prevalence of infection by C. tenuicollis among the pigs was 27.5%(39/142) and 2.0%(10/506) in untreated and treated groups, respectively. Untreated group was infested only with viable cysts, whereas treated group had no viable cysts. All the cysts found in treated group presented degeneration, with a thick membrane, and they contained milky fluid and fibrous tissue. A single dose of OFZ was effective against C. tenuicollis, thus providing an alternative drug for controlling this parasite in pigs.

The aims of this study were to determine the meiotic behavior and to estimate pollen grains via-bility in bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)*** buds were collected during different developmental stages of the Mesoamerican bean cultivars IAPAR 44,Guapo Brilhante,BRS Expedito,BRS Valente,Guateian 6662 and Pérola,and the Andean bean cultivar Iraí,grown in a *** meiotic index was determined by anther squashing of material fixed in absolute ethanol-glacial acetic acid(3:1)and stained with acetic *** meiotic abnormalities were observed and the meiotic indices were high for all cultivars,indicating that the mismatch generated during crosses is not related to any meiotic *** of pollen viability was made by comparing acetic orcein staining ***’s reactive:pollen viability was high in all cultivars with either stain,but was significantly higher when using the acetic orcein stain(>99%).Though some cultivar showed a significantly smaller pollen size,the range of variation among cultivars was low(means’range 51-66μm).

Modeling and Numerical Simulation of Ammonia Synthesis Reactors Using Compositional Approach

Ammonia synthesis reactors operate in conditions of high pressure and high temperature. Consequently, the flow inside these reactors always presents interaction between components in the feed mixture. A modeling accounts these interactions with pressure, temperature and the molar fraction is essential to converter simulation more realistic. The compositional approach based on cubic equations of state provides the influences of the component of a gas mixture using mixing rules and binary interaction parameters. This multicomponent description makes the model more robust and reliable for properties mixture prediction. In this work, two models of ammonia synthesis reactors were simulated: adiabatic and autothermal. The fitted expression of Singh and Saraf was used. The adiabatic reactor model presented a maximum relative error of 1.6% in temperature and 11.4% in conversion while the autothermal reactor model presents a maximum error of 2.7% in temperature, when compared to plant data. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis in input variables of both converter models was performed to predict operational limits and performance of the Models for Ammonia Reactor Simulation (MARS).
