AIM: To define NGF (nerve growth factor) and its high- affinity receptor trkANGF presence and distribution in fibrotic liver and in HCC, and to verify if NGF might have a role in fibrosis and HCC. METHODS: Intracellular distribution of NGF and trkANGF were assessed by immunohistochemistry and immuno- electron microscopy in liver specimens from HCC, cirrhosis or both. ELISA was used to measure circulating NGF levels. RESULTS: NGF and trkANGF were highly expressed in HCC tissue, mainly localized in hepatocytes, endothelial and some Kupffer cells. In the cirrhotic part of the liver they were also markedly expressed in bile ducts epithelial and spindle-shaped cells. Surprisingly, in cirrhotic tissue from patients without HCC, both NGF and trkANGF were negative. NGF serum levels in cirrhotic and/or HCC patient were up to 25-fold higher than in controls. CONCLUSION: NGF was only detected in liver tissue with HCC present. Intracellular distribution suggests paracrine and autocrine mechanisms of action. Better definition of mechanisms may allow for therapeutic and diagnostic/prognostic use of NGF.

Identification of the Sustainable Wind and Solar potential in Urban Areas Using a GIS Methodology

In recent years the publication of new legislation in the renewables sector, namely the one related to microgeneration systems, has contributed to an increase in the installation of renewable energy systems in portugal. Nevertheless, the investment in these systems is still high and the risk of considering sites with reduced resource constitutes a barrier to the development of this sub-sector. In the sequence of the previous work developed in the wind energy planning area, a methodology to identify the sustainable wind and solar potential in urban areas was developed, in order to reduce the pre-installation costs related to a less suitable site selection, and also to identify the real potential of the urban areas. In order to do so, a geographical information system was used and a set of tools was developed. The methodology was structured to enable its replication in other geographical locations and is sufficiently interactive to allow for the variation of the main input data. A case study in two urban environments is presented in this document to illustrate the developed methodology.

Background:Split skin grafting(SSG)is the cornerstone in the treatment of deep burns and large skin *** used donor sites are the thigh,abdomen and *** scalp is less common while considered as a reliable donor *** are a large surface area,rapid wound healing,cosmetically favourable results and multiple harvests from the same donor *** include scab formation,chronic folliculitis and alopecia but have been recorded sporadically in previous *** article evaluates the complication rate of the scalp donor site in the treatment of deep burns in the Beverwijk Burn ***:A retrospective study was performed of all patients who received a skin graft from the scalp at the Beverwijk Burn Centre between January 2004 and December *** were collected from medical files of included patients,including gender,age,type of burn(scald,flame,other)and total body surface area(TBSA)burned at the time of first *** variables were healing time of the donor site and incidence of *** follow-up,the incidence of late complications was ***:A total number of 105 grafts were analysed in 93 patients:58 males(62%)and 35 females(38%),with a median age of 2 years and 3 months *** the patients,30(32%)had flame burns and 57(61%)had scald ***-seven percent of patients had a TBSA burned of 5%or *** donor sites healed within 14 *** alopecia or scar hypertrophy developed at the donor *** patients(2.2%)developed folliculitis;one patient(1.1%)showed scab ***:The scalp as a donor site in our Burn Centre shows a comparable short-term complication rate to the previous literature,with quick healing and no long-term ***,we propose the consideration of the scalp as a primary donor site,especially in young children,where the scalp offers a larger donor site area than the buttocks or thighs.

AIM： Although increased insulin-like growth factor-I receptor （IGF-IR） gene expression has been reported in hepatocellular carcinoma, studies assessing IGF-IR in chronic hepatitis C （CHC） and cirrhosis are scarce. We therefore aimed to evaluate IGF-IR and IGF-I rnRNA expression in liver from patient with CHC. METHODS： IGF-IR and IGF-I rnRNA content were determined by semi-quantitative RT-pCR and IGF-IR protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry in hepatic tissue obtained from patients with CHC before （34 patients） and after （10 patients） therapy with interferon-α and ribavirin. RESULTS： An increase of IGF-IR rnRNA content was observed in hepatic tissue obtained from all CHC patients as well as from 6 cadaveric liver donors following orthopic transplantation （an attempt to evaluate normal livers） in comparison to normal liver, while no relevant modifications were detected in IGF-I mRNA content. The irnrnunohistochemical results showed that the raise in IGF-IR rnRNA content was related both to ductular reaction and to increased IGF-IR expression in hepatocytes. A decrease in IGF-IR rnRNA content was observed in patients who achieved sustained virological response after therapy, suggesting an improvement in hepatic damage. CONCLUSION： The up-regulation of IGF-IR expression in hepatocytes of patients with CHC could constitute an attempt to stimulate hepatocyte regeneration. Considering that liver is the organ with the highest levels of IGF-I, our finding of increased IGF-IR expression after both acute and chronic hepatic damage highlights the need for additional studies to elucidate the role of IGF-I in liver regeneration.

BACKGROUND percutaneous bilateral biliary stenting is an established method for the management of unresectable malignant hilar biliary *** To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel uncovered biliary stent, specifically designed for hilar *** This, single-center, retrospective study included 18 patients(mean age 71 ± 11 years;61.1% male) undergoing percutaneous transhepatic Moving cell stent(MCS) placement for hilar reconstruction using the stent-in-stent technique for malignant biliary strictures, between November 2020 and July 2021. The patients were diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma(12/18;66.6%), gallbladder cancer(5/18;27.7%), and colorectal liver metastasis(1/18;5.5%). primary endpoints were technical(appropriate stent placement) and clinical(relief from jaundice) success. Secondary endpoints included stent patency, overall survival, complication rates and stent-related *** The technical and clinical success rates were 100%(18/18 cases). According to Kaplan-Meier analysis, the estimated overall patient survival was 80.5% and 60.4% at 6 and 12 mo respectively, while stent patency was 90.9% and 68.2% at 6 mo and 12 mo respectively. The mean stent patency was 172.53 ± 56.20 d and median stent patency was 165 d(range 83-315). Laboratory tests for cholestasis significantly improved after procedure: mean total bilirubin decreased from 15.2 ± 6.0 mg/d L to 1.3 ± 0.4 mg/d L(p p periprocedural complication was reported. Stent-related complications were observed in 5 patients(27.7%), including 1 occlusion(5.5%) and 1 stent migration(5.5 %).CONCLUSION percutaneous hilar bifurcation biliary stenting with the MCS resulted in excellent clinical and technical success rates, with acceptable complication rates. Further studies are needed to confirm these initial positive results.

BACKGROUND(-)-Fenchone is a bicyclic monoterpene present in essential oils of plant species,such as Foeniculum vulgare and peumus boldus,used to treatment of gastrointestinal *** studies report its anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antinociceptive *** To investigate antidiarrheal activity related to gastrointestinal motility,intestinal secretion and antimicrobial *** A castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal *** transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to assess a possible antimotility *** receptors,presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors,KATp channels,nitric oxide were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory *** antimicrobial activity was evaluated in the minimum inhibitory concentration model,the fractional inhibitory concentration index using the(-)-fenchone association method with standard antifungal ***(-)-Fenchone(75,150 and 300 mg/kg)showed antidiarrheal activity,with a significant decrease in the evacuation *** activity is possibly related to a percentage of reduced intestinal transit(75,150 and 300 mg/kg).The antimotility effect of(-)-fenchone decreased in the presence of pilocarpine,yohimbine,propranolol,L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester or *** the enteropooling model,no reduction in intestinal fluid weight was observed.(-)-Fenchone did not show antibacterial activity;on the other hand,inhibits the growth of strains of fungi with a minimum fungicide concentration of 32μg/***,when it was associated with amphotericin B,no synergism was *** The antidiarrheal effect of(-)-fenchone in this study involves antimotility effect and not involve antisecretory mechanisms.(-)-Fenchone presents antifungal activity;however,it did not show antibacterial activity.

Glycine supplementation reduces the severity of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in hamsters

Objective: Oral mucositis (OM) is a devastating toxicity associated with cytotoxic cancer therapy. The OM pathogenesis and the complex interactions occur in response to tissue insult. Application of this evolving model has aided in the development of mechanistically based therapies for the prevention and treatment of mucositis. The present study was to assess the effects of glycine supplementation on chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. Methods: In a hamster cheek pouch model of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, one group of 20 animals received systemic glycine supplementation for 7 days, while another similar control group did not. Clinical mucositis severity and neutrophil infiltrate (on histology) were assessed by blinded examiners. Free radical production was measured as malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Results: As compared to control animals, glycine-treated animals demonstrated a highly significant reduction in clinical severity of oral mucositis, neutrophil infiltrate, and MDA levels (p pplementation reduces the severity of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in an animal model. This effect is at least partly mediated through inhibition of the inflammatory response and reduced production of damaging free radicals.

The Coverage of Drug Trafficking： peace and War Journalism in American, Mexican, and Spanish Online Newspapers

Galtung （1998a） held that there are two ways of covering a conflict： the low road and the high road; each road is different in focus. The first is called war journalism and the second is called peace journalism. Based on this, a specialized journalism model on conflict coverage was created： peace journalism. The principles and actions of this model could be used to analyze the making of news that responds to the criteria of peace journalism. In other words, they can be applied in two separate ways, either as tools for the analysis of information on conflicts or as guidelines to create new information. This article focuses on the first approach, the content analysis, to determine if the analyzed news is oriented to either War journalism or peace journalism, according to what peace journalism proposes. The author cares about how the ideology influence in this point. The author analyzed three major newspapers, on its online version： The New York Times, USA; La Jornada, M6xico, and El Mundo, Spain. The first two could be considered left-wing newspapers and the last one is right-wing oriented. The issues covered by the newspapers were the Mexican government war against drugs principally, and issues related with the war against drugs in the world. The results show that the newspaper who scored best and was located within the standards of peace journalism is El Mundo.
