A 74-year-old man with terminal chronic kidney disease, under hemodialysis and with residual diuresis, was admitted due to myalgia, arthralgia, fever and pyuria in the previous 10 days. The patient had a recent diagnosis of high-grade non-invasive bladder cancer and was doing weekly BCG intravesical administrations. The symptoms started three days before the fifth administration. He had done cefixime as an outpatient and started piperacillin-tazobactam on hospital admission, but the fever persisted, and there was no bacterial isolation in urine or blood culture. On the tenth and seventeenth day after the last BCG intravesical administration Mycobacterium bovis was still isolated in the urine culture. The diagnosis of BCGitis was made and treatment was started, with a good response. Forty days after the last administration and under treatment, the culture remained positive for Mycobacterium bovis in the urine. We raise the question about the safety of BCG administration in patients with residual diuresis.

Broadband Optical Active Waveguides Written by Femtosecond Laser Pulses in Lithium Fluoride

Broadband waveguiding through light-emitting strips directly written in a blank lithium fluoride crystal with a femtosecond laser is reported. Light guiding was observed at several optical wavelengths, from blue, 458 nm, to near-infrared, at 155nm. Visible photoluminescence spectra of the optically active F2 and F33 color centers produced by the fs laser writing process were measured. The wavelength-dependent refractive index increase was estimated to be in the order of 10-3-10-4 in the visible and near-infrared spectral intervals, which is consistent with the stable formation of point defects in LiF.

We examined the mycobiota associated with Vismia guianensis leaf litter in three Atlantic Forest remnants of Brazil＇ s semiarid region. Among the study sites, two remnants were protected forest reserves, whereas the third was influenced by major anthropogenic activities. Eighteen litter samples were collected in wet and dry seasons and were processed by particle filtration technique. A total of 4750 fungal isolates of 142 taxa were identified. species richness was higher in litter samples collected during wet season. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling multivariate analysis showed differences in the composition of fungal communities among the sampling sites and the seasons. Analysis of similarity showed that the differences were statistically significant （R = 0.85; P = 0.0001）. Our findings revealed that spatial and temporal heterogeneity, and human activities had significant impacts on the saprobic fungi of V. guianensis leaf litter.

Tobacco addiction has been mentioned as a leading cause of preventable illnesses and premature disability. smoking is the main cause of lung cancer and one of the factors that most contribute to the occurrence of heart diseases, among others. The herbaceous species Nicotiana tabacum is a plant of the solanaceae family used for tobacco production. some authors have conducted research about heavy metals and the toxicity of tobacco. It is, frequently, found in low concentrations in the ground, and superficial and underground waters, even though they do not have environmental anthropogenic contributions. However, with the increase of industrial activities and mining together with the agrochemical use of contaminated organic and inorganic fertilizers, an alteration of the geochemical cycle occurs. As a consequence, the natural flow of these materials increases and is released into the biosphere, where they are often accumulated in the superior layer of the ground, accessible to the roots of the plants. During planting and plant development, fertilizers and insecticides, including organochlorines and organophosphates, are used;consequently, the smoke from cigarette smoking presents various toxic substances, such as bromine (Br), manganese (Mn) and antimony (sb), elements studied in this work. The procedures for the preparation of the samples were carried out in our laboratories and submitted to irradiation with thermal neutrons at Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN/CNEN-sP), in the Atomic Energy Institute IEA-R1 research reactor. The irradiated material was, then, analyzed by gamma spectrometry, using a high purity germanium detector (HPGe).

Companies differ in their motivation to corporate social responsibility(CsR)practices,with some companies taking a genuine,altruistic approach and others preferring an opportunistic approach(and attempting to mimic the former).If consumers can distinguish them,they will eventually reward the altruistic(being willing to pay more)and penalize the opportunistic *** paper performs an experimental study to assess whether differences in consumers’willingness to pay are statistically significant for different classifications of CsR activities:(i)proactive or reactive,(ii)environment,employees,or social,(iii)involving more or less expensive products,(iv)being performed by firms facing competition or *** show that consumers are willing to reward CsR initiatives that follow a reactive approach;consumers’decisions are more moderate when rewarding initiatives associated with more expensive products;the rewards provided depend on the CsR dimension;a relationship between market structure and consumers’reaction to CsR was not found.

BACKGROUND Merkel cell carcinoma(MCC)is a rare and aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine neoplasia,with high risk of recurrence and metastasis and poor *** checkpoint inhibitors,like the anti-programmed death-ligand 1 agent avelumab,were recently approved for the treatment of advanced ***,herein,report the first case of advanced MCC with oligoprogression managed with avelumab and local radical *** sUMMARY A 61-year-old man was presented to the hospital with sporadic fever and an exudative malodorous mass(10 cm of diameter),located on the right gluteal *** final diagnosis was MCC,cT4N3M1c(AJCC,TNM staging 8th edition,2017),with invasion of adjacent muscle,in-transit metastasis,and bone *** started chemotherapy(cisplatin and etoposide),and after six cycles,the main tumor increased,evidencing disease *** months later,the patient started second line treatment with avelumab(under an early access program).After two cycles of treatment,the lesion started to decrease,achieving a major *** progression was documented after 16 ***,as the tumor became resectable,salvage surgery was performed,while keeping the systemic treatment with *** the patient developed bilateral pneumonia,immunotherapy was *** than 2.5 years after surgery(last 19 mo without systemic therapy),the patient maintains complete local response and stable bone *** This report highlights the efficacy and long-term response of avelumab on the management of a chemotherapy resistant advanced MCC,with evidence of oligoprogression,in combination with local radical treatment.

Nowadays, lamb meat represents only 7% of all meat produced in the world. In recent years the demand for standardized lamb meat cuts has been considered of great importance and the marketing occurs predominantly in the form of frozen cuts. Herewith, the main of this work was to evaluate the stability and safety of lamb meat during frozen storage. Meats were vacuum packed in high barrier multilayer plastic iflms and stored during 12 mon at （-18±1）℃. The meat stability was assessed by physical and chemical （lipid oxidation, objective color, pH value, cooking losses and instrumental texture）, microbiological （total count of psychrotrophic, coliform count at 45℃, coagulase-positive staphylococci and the presence of salmonella） and sensory analysis （acceptance test and visual evaluation）. The vacuum packed lamb meat remained stable as to most physical and chemical indexes. Microbiological indexes showed good stability throughout the storage period according to Brazilian legislation standards to pathogenic microorganisms. Although a signiifcant reduction in tenderness （shear force increase from 3 to 8 kg）, it showed a good sensorial acceptance for all attributes tested, including texture, with scores of around 7 （like moderately） during the 12 mon of storage. Therefore, it can be concluded that, under the conditions applied in this study, lamb meat presents a shelf life of at least 12 mon when stored at-18℃.
