Analysis of genetic relationship am.ng Arbutus unedo L. genotypes using RAPD and SSR m.rkers

The strawberry tree （Arbutus unedo L.） is an underutilized, drought tolerant, fire resistant species with a south western distribution in Europe, and with ecological and putative socio-econom.cal im.act in Portugal and m.diterranean countries. Our aim.was to develop an appropriate set of m.lecular m.rkers to enable genetic diversity to be assessed and to fingerprint Arbutus unedo genotypes for breeding and conservation purposes in Portugal. Twenty-seven trees from.a broad geographic range were screened with 20 random.am.lified polym.rphic DNA （RAPD prim.rs） and 11 m.crosatellite m.rkers （SSR）. The RAPDs generated 124 bands, 57.3% of which were polym.rphic, with an expected heterozygosity of 27%. We cross-am.lified 11 SSR prim.rs developed for Vaccinium.spp., and 5 were found to be polym.rphic in A. unedo, with 75% of expected heterozygosity, a num.er of alleles of 11.6, a null allele frequency of 7.6% and a polym.rphic inform.tion content of 71%. Although the SSRs were m.re polym.rphic and inform.tive than the RAPDs, both m.rkers displayed high genetic variability with the gathered data. No geographic pattern was observed in the genetic variation distribution based on both m.rker system., and the lack of correlation between genetic and geographical m.trices was confirm.d by m.ntel tests. Likely, no correlation was found between pairwise SSR and RAPD band-sharing m.trices. These results and their im.lications on A. unedo breeding and conservation program. are discussed.

Low-electrode capacitive deionization(FCDI)is an em.rging desalination technology with great potential for rem.val and/or recycling ions from.a range of ***,it still suffers from.inefficient charge transfer and ion transport kinetics due to weak turbulence and low electric intensity in flow electrodes,both restricted by the current ***,a new tip-array current collector(designated as T-CC)was developed to replace the conventional planar current collectors,which intensifies both the charge transfer and ion transport *** effects of tip arrays on flow and electric fields were studied by both com.utational sim.lations and electrochem.cal im.edance spectroscopy,which revealed the reduction of ion transport barrier,charge transport barrier and internal *** the voltage increased from.1.0 to 1.5 and 2.0 V,the T-CC-based FCDI system.T-FCDI)exhibited average salt rem.val rates(ASRR)of 0.18,0.50,and 0.89μm.l cm.(-2) m.n^(-1),respectively,which are 1.82,2.65,and 2.48 folds higher than that of the conventional serpentine current collectors,and 1.48,1.67,and 1.49 folds higher than that of the planar current ***,with the solid content in flow electrodes increased from.1 to 5 wt%,the ASRR for T-FCDI increased from.0.29 to 0.50μm.l cm.(-2) m.n^(-1),which are 1.70 and 1.67 folds higher than that of the planar current ***,a salt rem.val efficiency of 99.89%was achieved with T-FCDI and the charge efficiency rem.ined above 95%after 24 h of operation,thus showing its superior long-term.stability.

β-defensins and the epididym.s： contrasting influences of prenatal, postnatal, and adult scenarios

β-defensins are com.onents of host defense, with antim.crobial and pleiotropic im.uno-m.dulatory properties. Research over the last 15 years has dem.nstrated abundant expression of a variety of β-defensins in the postnatal epididym.s of different species. A gradient of region- and cell-specific expression of these proteins is observed in the epithelium.of the postnatal epididym.s. Their secretion into the lum.nal fluid and binding to sperm.tozoa as they travel along the epididym.s has suggested their involvem.nt in reproduction-specific tasks. Therefore, continuous attention has been given to various β-defensins for their role in sperm.function and fertility. Although β-defensins are largely dependent on androgens, the underlying m.chanism. regulating their expression and function in the epididym.s are not well understood. Recent investigation has pointed out to a new and interesting scenario where β-defensins em.rge with a different expression pattern in the Wolffian duct, the em.ryonic precursor of the epididym.s, as opposed to the adult epididym.s, thereby redefining the concept concerning the m.ltifunctional roles of β-defensins in the developing epididym.s. In this review, we sum.arize som. current views of β-defensins in the epididym.s highlighting our m.st recent data and speculations on their role in the developing epididym.s during the prenatal-to-postnatal transition, bringing attention to the m.ny unanswered questions in this research area that m.y contribute to a better understanding of epididym.l biology and m.le fertility.
