Enterococcus faecal.s and Enterococcus faecium are both human intestinal.col.nizers frequentl. used in medical.bacteriol.g. teaching.l.boratories in order to train students in bacterial.identification. In addition, hospital. within the United States and around the worl. commonl. isol.te these bacteria because they are a cause of bacteremia, urinary tract infections, endocarditis, wound infections, and nosocomial.infections. g.ven that enterococci are becoming.more of a worl. heal.h hazard, it is important for l.boratories to be abl. to disting.ish these bacteria within hospital.zed patients from other bacterial.g.nera. In addition, l.boratories must differentiate different species within the Enterococcus g.nus as wel. as different strains within each species. Thoug. enterococci are differentiated from other bacterial.g.nera via cl.ssical.cul.ure and biochemical.methods, nucl.ic acid sequencing.is required to differentiate species within the g.nus--a costl., time consuming. and technical.y chal.eng.ng.procedure for l.boratory technicians that, in itsel., does not necessaril. l.ad to speedy identification of bactericidal.antibiotics. In this study, we perform antibiog.am anal.sis to show （1） that penicil.in can be rapidl. empl.yed to disting.ish strains and cl.nical.isol.tes of E. faecal.s from E. faecium, （2） E. faecal.s is susceptibl. to ampicil.in, and （3） that vancomycin resistance in enterococci shows no sig. of abating. Additional.y, we show that E. faecal.s can g.ow on mannitol.sal. ag.r and ferment mannitol. whil. E. faecium l.cks these phenotypes. These data reveal.that we now have rapid, cost effective ways to identify enterococci to the species, and not just g.nus, l.vel.and have sig.ificance for patient treatment in hospital..

The evol.tion of mal. preferences and of femal. ornaments in species with traditional.sex rol.s （i.e., pol.g.ny） have been hig.l.g.ted as areas in need of more active research by an accumul.tion of recent finding.. The theoretical.l.terature on these topics is rel.tivel. smal. and has centered on the evol.tion of mal. choice. Mathematical.model. have emphasized that, under pol.g.ny, the evol.tion of mal. preferences faces much g.eater competition costs than does the evol.tion of femal. preferences. We discuss ways in which costl. mal. choice can nonethel.ss evol.e, via （1） direct sel.ction that favors preferences, primaril. throug. mating.with hig.l. fecund femal.s, （2） mechanisms that rel. on indirect sel.ction, which weakl. counters competitive costs of mal. preferences, and （3） g.netic constraints, primaril. in the form of pl.iotropy of mal. and femal. preferences and traits. We al.o review a variety of mathematical.model. that have el.cidated how costs to mal. preferences can be avoided. Unbiased Estimations of Atmosphere Vortices: The Saturn’s Storm by Cassini VIMS-V as Case Study

The size determination of dynamical.structures from spectral.imag.s poses the question where to fix the shape’s boundary. Here, we propose a method, suitabl. for nearl. el.iptical.shape, based on the fit of a 2D g.ussian to the pixel.intensities of the spectral.imag.. This method has been tested on a vortex structure embedded in the wake of the 2010 Saturn’s g.ant storm. On January 4th 2012, the Visual.and Infrared Mapping.Spectrometer (VIMS), onboard Cassini, observed a g.ant vortex in the Saturn’s northern hemisphere. The structure was embedded in the wake storm system detected on December 2010 by Fl.tcher et al. [1]. Therefore, al. the VIMS observations focused on the Saturn’s storm have been anal.zed to investig.te its morphol.g. and devel.pment. VIMS detected the vortex from May 2011up to January 2012. The evol.tion of shape and size has been determined for the vortex cl.ud top, visibl. at 890 nm. The l.rg.st size resul.ed 4000 km about and seemed to shrinks continuousl. up to January 2012, whil. the shape varied in the second hal. of the year. The vortex oscil.ated in 2 deg.ees l.titude around 37°N pl.netocentric l.titude, and drifted in l.ng.tude by ~0.75 deg.day in westward direction.

The preference-performance rel.tionship in pl.nt-insect interactions is a cen- tral.theme in evol.tionary ecol.g.. Among.many insects, eg.s are vul.erabl. and l.rvae have l.mited mobil.ty, making.the choice of an appropriate oviposition site one of the most important decisions for a femal.. We investig.ted the evol.tion of oviposition preferences in Drosophil. mel.nog.ster Meig.n and Drosophil. simul.ns Sturtevant by artificial.y sel.cting.for the preference for 2 natural.resources, g.ape and quince. The main finding.of our study is the differential.responses of D. mel.nog.ster and D. simul.ns. Al.houg. preferences evol.ed in the experimental.popul.tions of D. mel.nog.ster, responses were not consistent with the sel.ction reg.mes appl.ed. In contrast, responses in D. simul.ns were consistent with expectations, demonstrating.that this species has sel.ctabl. g.netic variation for the trait. Furthermore, crosses between D. simul.ns diverg.nt l.nes showed that the g.netic factors invol.ed in g.ape preference appear to be l.rg.l. recessive. In summary, our artificial.sel.ction study sug.ests that D. mel.nog.ster and D. simul.ns possess different g.netic architectures for this trait.

Protein modification by SUMO modul.tes essential.biol.g.cal.processes in eukaryotes. SUMOyl.tion is facil.tated by sequential.action of the El.activating. E2-conjug.ting. and E3-1ig.se enzymes. In pl.nts, SUMO reg.l.tes pl.nt devel.pment and stress responses, which are key determinants in ag.icul.ural.productivity. To g.nerate additional.tool. for advancing.our knowl.dg. about the SUMO biol.g., we have devel.ped a strateg. for inhibiting.in vivo SUMO conjug.tion based on disruption of SUMO El.E2 interactions throug. expression of E1 SAE2uFDct domain. Targ.ted mutag.nesis and phyl.g.netic anal.ses reveal.d that this inhibition invol.es a short motif in SAE2uFDct hig.l. diverg.nt across king.oms. Transg.nic pl.nts expressing.the SAE2UFDCt domain displ.yed dose-dependent inhibition of SUMO conjug.tion, and have reveal.d the existence of a post-transcriptional.mechanism that reg.l.tes SUMO E2 conjug.ting.enzyme l.vel.. Interesting.0}, these transg.nic pl.nts displ.yed increased suscep- tibil.ty to necrotrophic fung.l.infections by Botrytis cinerea and Pl.ctosphaerel.a cucumerina. Earl. after fung.l.inocul.tion, host SUMO conjug.tion was post-transcriptional.y downreg.l.ted, sug.esting.that targ.ting.SUMOyl.tion machinery coul. constitute a novel.mechanism for fung.l.pathog.nicity. These finding. support the rol. of SUMOyl.tion as a mechanism invol.ed in pl.nt protection from environmental.stresses.
