Inflammatory bowel diseases and human reproduction:A comprehensive evidence-based review

Low-Cost CSI Using Forensic GPR, 3D Reconstruction, and GIS

At a time in which several law enforcement agencies all around the world are facing severe expenditure reviews, the increasing use of low-cost solutions during crime scene investigations (CSI) can be a sustainable solution without being detracting from a scientific and rigorous forensic approach. Recently, some private companies are trying to satisfy the growing needs of the police to have cheaper and faster techniques to survey crime scenes and to obtain results with scientifically high-level outputs, more or less comparable with similar outputs from more expensive instruments. This paper reported results from a crime scene in which a low-cost GPR instrument, a free 3D photogrammetry software, and an open-source geographical information system (GIS) were deployed. The collection, processing, and analyses of these data will provide a very promising starting point for future low-cost and professional applications.

Biological Therapy and Risk of Malignancies: A Literature Review

Data from literature show that the overall risk of cancer does not as a result from treatment with these drugs. The only cancer for which various authors have reported an increased risk, in some cases, are skin cancers, different from melanoma and melanoma. Recent results of large observational studies and meta-analyzes indicate the absence of an increased risk of lymphoma related to therapy with anti-TNF-α. It has been reported, by some authors, that there is a possible increased risk of lung cancer, especially in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. There is limited information in literature about the effects of biologics in patients with a history of cancer. Most of the guidelines indicate that treatment with biologics can be considered with caution and only in patients free of cancer since at least 5 years. Some studies report a lower oncological risk with etanercept compared to monoclonal antibodies, especially in the case of lymphoma. However, this data has not been confirmed in other studies, and has been associated with a limited period of time after starting therapy. Information about the latest biological therapies is still poor. Therefore, there is not sufficient evidence for a preferential use of certain drugs rather than others.

In recent decades,third-generation(3G)biofuels have become a more attractive method of fuel production,as algae cultivation does not infringe on resources needed for food ***,algae can adapt to different environments,has high photosynthetic efficiency(CO_(2)fixation),and has a high potential for carbohydrate *** prevalence of algae worldwide demonstrates its ability to adapt to different environments and climates,proving its biodiversity and *** can be grown in wastewater,seawater,and even sewage,thus ensuring a lower water footprint and greater energy efficiency during algal biomass *** of this,the optimization of 3G ethanol production appears to be an excellent alternative to mitigate environmental impacts and increase energy and food *** critical review presents(i)the stages of cultivation and processing of micro and macroalgae;(ii)the selection of yeasts(through engineering and/or bioprospecting)to produce ethanol from these biomasses;(iii)the potential of seawater-based facilities to reduce water footprint;and(iv)the mass and energy balances of 3G ethanol production in the world energy *** article is,above all,a brainstorm on the environmental viability of algae bioethanol.

Unveiling Citizens’ Perceptions, Attitudes, and Behaviors towards Air Quality: Insights from a Survey in the Po Basin Area

Air pollution has far-reaching environmental and social consequences, requiring the active participation of individual citizens in improving air quality by means of emission-reducing behaviors. This research examines the relationship between citizens’ knowledge, perceptions of air quality, attitudes towards policy measures, and intentions to adopt environmentally-friendly behaviors to combat air pollution. A comprehensive survey is conducted among a representative sample from seven regions in the Po basin area: emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Piedmont, Province of Trento, Valle d’Aosta, and Veneto. The survey aims at profiling participants based on their level of information, perceptions of air pollution, and attitudes towards emission-reducing behaviors. Cluster analysis identifies meaningful differences among citizen groups in terms of their awareness and intentions to engage in specific behaviors. Four distinct clusters emerge, each characterized by varying levels of willingness to embrace pro-environmental behaviors and support air quality improvement initiatives. By examining these profiles, the study uncovers patterns in citizens’ awareness, concerns, and acceptance of environmentally-friendly practices. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers to develop targeted interventions, policies, and communication strategies.

The goal of this work is to perform the risks analysis of the mission NANOSATC-BR1 and NANOSATC-BR2 and then compare them linearly. The NANOSATC-BR1 and NANOSATC-BR2 are the first and the second satellite, respectively. They belonged to the project NANOSATC-BR-development of CubeSats, which is performed in the facilities built by the partnership between the National Institute of Space Research and the Technological Center from Federal University of Santa maria. The project focuses on the development of a scientific instrumentation and, simultaneously, the design development, construction, qualification and launch of a national scientific nanosatellite, in a cube shape with 100 mm of edge and near to 1.33 kg of mass, per unit （U）. The risk analysis was held to identify and minimize the project＇s risks of failure, due to its complexity, assuring the mission success, preventing extra pays and rework. The software, CubeSat Mission Design Software Tool for Risk Estimating, which uses statistical regression methods, was used. So, we were capable to measure the project＇s most critical steps assuring its success. The NANOSATC-BR1 was launched in June 19 and it is orbiting the Earth in a nominal regime and the NANOSATC-BR2 has been scheduled to be launched in 2016.

AIM To assess the diagnostic accuracy of a new fecal test for detecting Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori), using ^(13)Curea breath test as the reference standard, and explore bacterial antibiotic resistance. METHODS We conducted a prospective two-center diagnostic test accuracy study. We enrolled consecutive people≥ 18 years without previous diagnosis of H. pylori infection, referred for dyspepsia between February and October 2017. At enrollment, all participants underwent 13 C-urea breath test. Participants aged over 50 years were scheduled to undergo upper endoscopy with histology. Participants collected stool samples 1-3 d after enrollment for a new fecal investigation(THD fecal test). The detection of bacterial 23 S rRNA subunit gene indicated H. pylori infection. We also used the index diagnostic test to examine mutations conferring resistance to clarithromycin and levofloxacin. Independent investigators analyzed index test and reference test standard results blinded to the other test findings. We estimated sensitivity, specificity, positive(PPV) and negative(NPV) predictive value, diagnostic accuracy, positive and negative likelihood ratio(LR), together with 95% confidence intervals(CI).RESULTS We enrolled 294 consecutive participants(age: Median 37.0 years, IQR: 29.0-46.0 years; men: 39.8%). Ninetyfive(32.3%) participants had a positive ^(13)C-urea breath test. Twenty-three(7.8%) participants underwent upper endoscopy with histology, with a full concordance between ^(13)C-urea breath test and histology in detecting H. pylori infection. Four(1.4%) out of the 294 participants withdrew from the study after the enrollment visit and did not undergo THD fecal testing. In the 290 participants who completed the study, the THD fecal test sensitivity was 90.2%(CI: 84.2%-96.3%), specificity 98.5%(CI:96.8%-100%), PPV 96.5%(CI: 92.6%-100%), NPV 95.6%(CI: 92.8%-98.4%), accuracy 95.9%(CI: 93.6%-98.2%), positive LR 59.5(CI: 19.3-183.4), negative LR 0.10(CI: 0.05-0.18). Bouveret's syndrome, defined as gastric outlet obstruction due to a large gallstone, is still one of the most dramatic biliary gallstone complications. Although new radiological and endoscopic techniques have made pre-surgical diagnosis possible in most cases and the death rate has dropped dramatically, "one-stage surgery" (biliary surgery carried out at the same time as the removal of the gut obstruction) should be still considered as the gold standard for the treatment of gallstone *** this case, partial gastric outlet obstruction resulted in an atypical and insidious clinical presentation that allowed us to perform the conventional one-stage laparatomic procedure that completely solved the problem, thus avoiding any further complications.

Minimizing right ventricular pacing in sinus node disease: Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease

Traditional right ventricular(RV) apical pacing has been associated with heart failure, atrial fibrillation and increased mortality. To avoid the negative consequences of RV apical pacing different strategies have been developed, among these a series of pacing algorithms designed to minimize RV pacing. These functions are particularly useful when there is not the need for continuous RV pacing: intermittent atrioventricular blocks and, mainly, sinus node disease. However, in order to avoid RV pacing, the operationalfeatures of these algorithms may lead to adverse(often under-appreciated) consequences in some patients. We describe a case of a patient with sinus node disease, in whom right atrial only pacing involved long atrio-ventricular delay to allow intrinsic ventricular conduction, which led to symptomatic hypotension that could be overcome only by "forcing" also right ventricular apical pacing. We subsequently discuss this case in the context of current available literature.

Acupuncture Point Injection of Vitamin K1 to Treat Severe Primary Dysmenorrhea: Case Series at a Women’s Health Service in Bologna

Introduction and Aim: Vitamin K acupuncture point injection is an effective and safe menstrual pain treatment derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine, commonly used in some Chinese hospitals. This case series investigated the effectiveness and safety of vitamin K acupuncture point injection on menstrual pain in patients with severe primary dysmenorrhea at a regional public health clinic at Bologna, Italy. Methods: From September 2006 to July 2010, 24 women were enrolled and treated during their first day of menstrual pain with an injection of 1 ml of solution containing 5 mg of vitamin K1 in an acupuncture point San Yin Jiao/Spleen 6 (SP6) bilaterally on the inside of each lower leg above the ankle. Results: Treatment was well tolerated and no major adverse events were reported. Pain relief was observed starting from 2 minutes after treatment and within 30 minutes. All treated women but one (96%) reported a substantial pain reduction (p 0.001). During the six post-treatment follow-up cycles, a trend toward a reduction of menstrual distress evaluated by the Cox Pain Intensity and Duration Scales was documented. Women reported fewer daily life restrictions and consumption of fewer analgesic tablets when compared to what they reported at the pre-treatment cycle. Conclusions: The results of this case series indicate that in primary dysmenorrhea a single vitamin K1 injection in the SP6 acupuncture point has an immediate pain-relieving effect and may ameliorate menstrual pain intensity and duration in post-treatment follow-up cycles.
