Repellent effect of synanthropic house mouse urine odor on small forest mammals

In this study,we examined the effect of synanthropic house mouse(Mus musculus)urine odor on catching probability of small mammals to live *** conducted a series of field experiments in August 2016 and 2017 in a natural forests of the northwestern Moscow Region(Russia).Small mammals were trapped at two 4-ha fields using capture-mark-recapture technique by setting 200 live traps(100 points,2 traps per point)within each *** trap in each pair was odorless(control)with bait only,whereas the other one was odor-baited with 20μL of the urine of a synanthropic house *** analysis was based on the data collected from 2 rodent species(bank vole Myodes glareolus,herb field mouse Apodemus uralensis)and 3 shrew species(common shrew Sorex araneus,Laxmann’s shrew Sorex caecutiens,and Eurasian pygmy shrew Sorex minutus).As a result,only bank voles significantly avoided odor-baited live *** generalized linear mixed models,we showed that the choice of a trap by bank voles depended on their age,whereas the probability of repeated capture to a certain live trap was related to their prior *** discuss the possible role of components of synanthropic house mouse urine in the population management of exoanthropic small mammals.

Predictors of bowel damage in the long-term progression of Crohn’s disease

BACKGROUND Crohn’s disease(CD)is a chronic inflammatory bowel disorder that progresses to bowel damage(BD)over *** image-based index,the Lémann index(LI),has been developed to measure cumulative *** To characterize the long-term progression of BD in CD based on changes in the LI and to determine risk factors for long-term *** This was a single-center longitudinal cohort *** who had participated in prospective studies on the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging using endoscopy as a gold standard and who had a follow-up of at least 5 years were reevaluated after 5-12 *** Seventy-two patients were *** increased in 38 patients(52.8%),remained unchanged in 9 patients(12.5%),and decreased in 25 patients(34.7%).The small bowel score and surgery subscale significantly increased(P=0.002 and P=0.001,respectively),whereas the fistulizing subscale significantly decreased(P=0.001).Baseline parameters associated with BD progression were ileal location(P=0.026),CD phenotype[stricturing,fistulizing,or both(P=0.007,P=0.006,and P=0.035,respectively)],disease duration>10 years(P=0.019),and baseline LI stricturing score(P=0.049).No correlation was observed between BD progression and baseline clinical activity,biological markers,or severity of endoscopic *** BD,as assessed by the LI,progressed in half of the patients with CD over a period of 5-12 *** main determinants of BD progression were ileal location,stricturing/fistulizing phenotype,and disease duration.

Selection of phages and conditions for the safe phage therapy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens forced us to consider the phage therapy as one of the possible alternative approaches to treatment. The purpose of this paper is to consider the conditions for the safe, long-term use of phage therapy against various infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We describe the selection of the most suitable phages, their most effective combinations and some approaches for the rapid recognition of phages unsuitable for use in therapy. The benefi ts and disadvantages of the various different approaches to the preparation of phage mixtures are considered, together with the specifi c conditions that are required for the safe application of phage therapy in general hospitals and the possibilities for the development of personalized phage therapy.

Natural history of cytomegalovirus infection in a series of patients diagnosed with moderate-severe ulcerative colitis

AIM:To evaluate the natural history of human cytomegalovirus(HCMV) infection in a series of 28 ulcerative colitis patients in whom the search for HCMV was ***:A series of 85 patients with moderate-severe ulcerative colitis flare-up were evaluated for a HCMV search by performing a haematoxylin and eosin stain,immunohistochemical assay and nested polymerase chain reaction on rectal *** 85 screened patients(19 of whom were steroid resistant/dependant),28 were positive for HCMV;after remission the patients were followed up clinically and ***:Among the 22 patients with complete followup,in 8(36%) patients HCMV-DNA persisted in the intestinal *** the HCMV positive patients,4(50%) experienced at least one moderate-severe flare-up of colitis without evidence of peripheral *** the 14 HCMV negative patients,3 with pouches developed pouchitis and 5 out of 11(45%) experienced a colitis ***:Our preliminary results suggest that HCMV may remain in the colon after an acute colitis flareup despite remission;it seems that the virus is not responsible for the disease relapse.
