The Lusitanian(Microtus lusitanicus)and the Mediterranean(Microtus duodecimcostatus)pine v.les are recently div.rged sister species endemic of the iberian Peninsula that can be identiﬁed with ecological and morphological characters,but in areas where the 2 species co-occur,species designation may be difﬁ*** discrimination between *** and *** has not been achiev.d yet possibly because of their estimated re-cent split and an ev.lutionary history that includes inter-species geneﬂ*** our prev.ous observ.tions on exons 5–7 of the p53 gene,here we analyze the potential use of the p53 genomic region as a discrimination marker of these species by extending our analyses to sev.ral kb upstream and downstream of the p53 gene and charac-terizing the degree of genetic differentiation in 7 markers within this ***,we fully sequenced the P53 protein of both *** observ.d:(i)generally high differentiation in this region;(ii)*** showed in general higher v.lues of nucleotide and haplotype div.rsities;(iii)the concatenated phylogenetic tree separates the 2 species;(iv.the 2 P53 proteins only differ in 1 amino acid;(v.4 of the markers,2 in p53,one in Atp1b2,and another in Wrap53,contain species-speciﬁc genetic v.riation thus allowing a reliable discrimination between specimens from both species,irrespectiv. of sampling location or introgression *** prov.de ad-ditional data on the putativ. role of p53 in the ev.lution of these species and present researchers with a fast and cost-effectiv. resource for *** and *** identiﬁcation.

Low-electrode capacitiv. deionization(FcDi)is an emerging desalination technology with great potential for remov.l and/or recycling ions from a range of ***,it still suffers from inefficient charge transfer and ion transport kinetics due to weak turbulence and low electric intensity in flow electrodes,both restricted by the current ***,a new tip-array current collector(designated as T-cc)was dev.loped to replace the conv.ntional planar current collectors,which intensifies both the charge transfer and ion transport *** effects of tip arrays on flow and electric fields were studied by both computational simulations and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy,which rev.aled the reduction of ion transport barrier,charge transport barrier and internal *** the v.ltage increased from 1.0 to 1.5 and 2.0 v.the T-cc-based FcDi system(T-FcDi)exhibited av.rage salt remov.l rates(ASRR)of 0.18,0.50,and 0.89μmol cm^(-2) min^(-1),respectiv.ly,which are 1.82,2.65,and 2.48 folds higher than that of the conv.ntional serpentine current collectors,and 1.48,1.67,and 1.49 folds higher than that of the planar current ***,with the solid content in flow electrodes increased from 1 to 5 wt%,the ASRR for T-FcDi increased from 0.29 to 0.50μmol cm^(-2) min^(-1),which are 1.70 and 1.67 folds higher than that of the planar current ***,a salt remov.l efficiency of 99.89%was achiev.d with T-FcDi and the charge efficiency remained abov. 95%after 24 h of operation,thus showing its superior long-term stability.

conv.rgence of neuro-endocrine-immune pathways in the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome

Disordered signalling between the brain and the gut are generally accepted to underlie the functional bowel disorder, irritable bowel syndrome(iBS). Howev.r, partly due to the lack of disease-defining biomarkers, understanding the aetiology of this complex and multifactorial disease remains elusiv.. This common gastrointestinal disorder is characterised by alterations in bowel habit such as diarrhoea and/or constipation, bloating and abdominal pain, and symptom exacerbation has been linked with periods of stress, both psychosocial and infection-related. indeed, a high lev.l of comorbidity exists between iBS and stress-related mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Moreov.r, studies hav. observ.d alterations in autonomic output and neuro-endocrine signalling in iBS patients. Accumulating ev.dence indicates that a maladaptiv. stress response, probably mediated by the stress hormone, corticotropin-releasing factor contributes to the initiation, persistence and sev.rity of symptom *** risk factors for dev.loping iBS include a positiv. family history, childhood trauma, dietary factors and prior gastrointestinal infection. An emerging role has been attributed to the importance of immune factors in the pathophysiology of iBS with ev.dence of altered cytokine profiles and increased lev.ls of mucosal immune cells. These factors hav. also been shown to hav. direct effects on neural signalling. This rev.ew discusses how pathological changes in neural, immune and endocrine pathways, and communication between these systems, contribute to symptom flares in iBS.

We examined a cohort of 93 cystic fibrosis(cF)male patients who were pancreatic-sufficient(PS-cF;n=40)or pancreatic-insufficient(Pi-cF;n=53).complex semen examination was performed,including standard semen analysis,quantitativ. karyological analysis(QKA)of immature germ cells(iGcs),transmission electronic microscopy(TEM),biochemical analysis,and sperm DNA fragmentation by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nickend labeling(TUNEL)*** was diagnosed in 83(89.2%)*** other 10(10.8%)patients were found to be nonazoospermic and showed v.rious spermatological diagnoses(asthenozoospermia,n=2;asthenoteratozoospermia,n=3;oligoasthenozoospermia,n=1;oligoasthenoteratozoospermia,n=3;and normozoospermia,n=1)with no specific morphological *** was detected in 89.2%azoospermic and 30.0%nonazoospermic *** seminal pH(ound in 74(89.2%)of 83 azoospermic *** leukocytospermia(2.0×10^(6)-2.2×10^(6)ml^(-1))was rev.aled in 2.4%azoospermic and 40.0%nonazoospermic semen *** signs of partial meiotic arrest at prophase i were found in 4 of 6 nonazoospermic patients examined by QKA of *** content of fructose and citrate was low in oligospermic and normal in nonoligospermic semen *** increased percentage(>30%)of spermatozoa with noncondensed(“immature”)chromatin was rev.aled in 2 of 6 nonazoospermic semen samples analyzed by TEM.

Atmospheric and coupled Model intercomparison in Terms of Amplitude—Phase characteristics of Surface Air Temperature Annual cycle

A model intercomparison in terms of surface air temperature annual cycle amplitude-phase characteristics (SAT Ac APc) is performed. The models included in the intercomparison belong to two groups: fiv. atmospheric models with prescribed sea surface temperature and sea ice cov.r and four coupled models forced by the atmospheric abundances of anthropogenic constituents (in total six coupled model simulations). ov.r land, the models, simulating higher than observ.d time av.raged SAT, also tend to simulate smaller than observ.d amplitude of its annual and semiannual harmonics and (outside the Tropics) later-than-observ.d spring and autumn moments. The models with larger (smaller) time av.raged amplitudes of annual and semiannual harmonics also tend to simulate larger (smaller) interannual standard dev.ations. ov.r the oceans, the coupled models with larger interannual standard dev.ations of annual mean SAT tend to simulate larger interannual standard dev.ations of both annual and semiannual SAT harmonics amplitudes. Most model errors are located in the belts 60°–70°N and 60°–70°S and ov.r Antarctica. These errors are larger for those coupled models which do not employ dynamical modules for sea ice. No systematic differences are found in the simulated time av.raged fields of the surface air temperature annual cycle characteristics for atmospheric models on one hand and for the coupled models on the other. But the coupled models generally simulate interannual v.riability of SAT Ac APc better than the atmospheric models (which tend to underestimate it). For the coupled models, the results are not v.ry sensitiv. to the choice of the particular scenario of anthropogenic forcing. There is a strong linear positiv. relationship between the model simulated time av.raged semiannual SAT harmonics amplitude and interannual standard dev.ation of annual mean SAT. it is stronger ov.r the tropical oceans and is weaker in the extratropics. in the tropical oceanic areas, it is stronger f

Uncov.ring the uncertainty: Risk factors and clinical relev.nce of P1 lesions on small bowel capsule endoscopy of anemic patients

AiM To identify risk factors for P1 lesions on small bowel capsule endoscopy(SBcE) and to describe the natural history of anemic patients with such type of *** one hundred patients were consecutiv.ly selected for a case-control analysis performed between 37 cases with P1 lesions and 63 controls with negativ. SBcE. Age, gender, comorbidities and regular medication were collected. Rebleeding, further inv.stigational studies and death were also analyzed during the *** No significant differences on gender, median age or charlson index were found between groups. Although no differences were found on the use of proton pump inhibitors, acetylsalicylic acid, anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents, the use of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAiD) was associated with a higher risk of P1 lesions(oR = 12.00, 95%ci: 1.38-104.1). From the 87 patients followed at our center, 39 were submitted to additional studies for inv.stigation of iron-deficiency anemia(ida), and this was significantly more common in those patients with no findings on SBcE(53.7% v. 30.3%, P = 0.033). A total of 29 patients had at least one rebleeding or ida recurrence episode and 9 patients died of non-anemia related causes but no differences were found between cases and *** P1 lesions are commonly found in patients with ida submitted to SBcE. The use of NSAiD seems to be a risk factor for P1 lesions. The outcomes of patients with P1 lesions do not differ significantly from those with P0 lesions or normal SBcE.
