This work presents a short and very efficient method to produce high performance textured Ca_3Co_4O_9 thermoelectric materials through initial powders modification. Microstructure has shown good grain orientation, and low porosity while slightly lower grain sizes were obtained in samples prepared from attrition milled powders. All samples show the high density of around 96% of the theoretical *** similar characteristics are reflected in, approximately,the same electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient values for both types of samples. However, in spite of similar power factor(PF) at low temperatures, it is slightly higher at high temperature for the attrition milled samples. On the other hand, the processing time reduction(from 38 to 2 h) when using attrition milled precursors, leads to lower mechanical properties in these samples. All these data clearly point out to the similar characteristics of both kinds of samples, with a drastic processing time decrease when using attrition milled precursors, which is of the main economic importance when considering their industrial production.

An international research conference, entitled ＂Geology of the area between North and South America, with focus on the origin of the Caribbean Plate＂, took place in Siguenza, Spain, from May 29-June 2, 2006. Fifty five people from 11 countries attended the meeting, which was chaired by Drs. Albert W. Bally, Mafia antonieta Lorente and David G. Roberts. Siguenza authorities and volunteers lent a great deal of enthusiastic support, while BP, Repsol, Shell, Statoil and SEPM provided financial encouragement.

In this trial, a topical formulation of a 1% liposome TH cream was compared to a conventional TH formulation. Permeation was evaluated through a synthetic membrane. The study provided information on the rate of diffusion and percentage of drug release and also compared the penetration dynamics in the layers of the stratum corneum of both formulations. Liposome TH cream was able to deliver the active ingredient to a larger number of SC layers, with a higher amount of drug, which is very promising for the treatment of superficial mycoses.

With the implementation of the Official Mexican Standard NOM-011-CONAGUA-2000 [1], the water balance of 730 basins has been calculated and its water availability agreement is published. This rule points out to allocate water for the environment only as an annual volume since methods for estimating environmental flows were not standardized in the country. For this reason, The Water Agency (CONAGUA) issued the standard NMX-AA-159-SCFI-2012 [2], to assess environmental flows needed both, at the strategic level in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), or as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of large hydraulic projects. For over ten years, this standard was developed and finally published in September 2012 [3]. It explains different methods from hydrological to holistic approaches, with examples for the country. Its application will cover the urgent need to preserve water for ecosystems in watersheds with high ecological importance and low stress for water use. In this paper, an analysis of the environmental flow standard and examples of the suggested hydrological methods are presented. For its implementation, some steps are taking place, mainly establishing environmental water reserves and building capacities. In addition, environmental allocations are becoming a common practice for all water projects, as well as setting limits to hydrological alterations by hydroelectric dams. The standard promotes the use of technical integration tools to analyze the responses of ecosystems to changes in the flow regime and adaptive management under different scenarios of water use. Although the main steps have been taken, its implementation as mandatory rule will take time.

During the Environmental Impact Assessment procedure (EIA) for hydropower projects, apart from the compliance with environmental standards and regulations, important environmental and ecosystem changes are foreseen from planning and construction stages. In Mexico, the EIA and environmental standards are being systematically applied and fulfilled at planning and construction stages for hydropower projects. These are mainly related to control air emissions, solid and hazardous wastes, water discharges and deal with protected species. In addition, due to land use changes, forestry compensation procedures have already been established. To comply with project approval conditions, an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) is carried out during construction;it includes mitigation measures, standards, regulations and approval conditions resulting of project review and in some cases requests from the public audience. Monitoring is carried out in the area of influence that is in the works and where it is expected that natural processes are modified. However, indicators to track these changes are minimal. This paper analyzes the regulatory and organizational frameworks to address environmental management during the planning and construction of hydropower facilities in Mexico and gives recommendations to expand the scope of the supervision and management of ecosystem changes.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of sildenafil in orodispersable tablets of 50 mg vs. placebo in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Methods: A blind, comparative, placebo controlled, randomized study was developed in 106 patients with ED. They randomly received sildenafil orodispersable 50 mg (Group I) or placebo (Group II) 3 times per week, 1 hour before sexual activity, during 4 weeks. The efficacy was evaluated by IIEF-5 and the adverse events (AE) by poll. Results: After 4 weeks a percentage improvement of the ED was observed in Group I patients 44% of whom became without ED vs. 2% of Group II, with an additional statistical significant improvement evidenced respect to the placebo in the IIEF-5 score from 13.7 ± 4.9 to 19.9 ± 4.4 vs. 13.1 ± 4.0 to 17.8 ± 4.9 in the placebo group, Confidence Interval (CI95%): 19.90 vs. 13.98, respectively, p Conclusions: Sildenafil was superior to placebo, substantially improved the IIEF-5 scores, showing a statistical significant therapeutic response in the ED treatment and it was safe and well tolerated.

AIM: To summarize the evidence available for the clinical effectiveness of insulin sensitizers in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) systematically. METHODS: Relevant articles were located using computer-assisted searches of Medline (1966-March 2006), EMBASE (1988-March 2006), CINAHL (1982-March 2003), Educational Resource Information Center (1966-March 2006), Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (1967-March 2006), Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (1994-2006), dissertations in ProQuest and FirstSearch databases. Manual searches were made in the abstracts from meetings of the American Gastroenterological Association (1999-2006), and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (2003-2005). Studies were retrieved using the following selection criteria: (1) clinical trials using insulin sensitizers in subjects with NAFLD, (2) adult patients, (3) published as full manuscripts or abstracts, and (4) English, Spanish, German, and French languages only. Data were abstracted independently by two reviewers following standardized procedures. A face-to- face comparison of data was conducted to ensure the completeness and reliability of the abstraction process. RESULTS: Nine studies were included, six using metformin and three using thiazolidinediones. Only two studies were placebo-controlled trials. The mediansample size for all studies was 18 subjects. In the placebo-controlled trials, metformin improved insulin resistance markers and liver function tests, but not histological scores. In the single-arm trials, metformin and thiazolidinediones improved insulin resistance markers and liver function tests, and beneficial histological changes were reported. Objective: To determine the ultrastructural findings on Rectal Mucosa (RM) of patients with HIV/AIDS and anorectal pathologies (ARP), at micrometric and nanometric scales. Materials and methods: 5 patients were evaluated, 18 - 55 years old, with ARP (HIV co-infection with HPV, n = 4, and HIV-negative patient with HPV infection) (control n = 1), who were referred to the Coloproctology Unit of the HUC, and subjected to rectoscopy and biopsy. RM samples were identified, placed in a sterile plastic bottle with 1 mL of 2% glutaraldehyde and immediately transported for routine processing of fine cut (60 - 90 nm) to be evaluated via Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). They were fixed with Karnovsky solution with Millonig phosphate buffer (pH 7.4 and 320 mOsm) and post-fixed with OsO4 under the same conditions of pH and osmolarity. Results: Ultrastructural findings, at 10−6 scale: 1) Intestinal mucosa: vacuoles of mucus of different sizes that seem to be fused. 2) Smooth muscle cells: loss of definition of contractile myofilaments mass. 3) Unmyelinated axons and terminals of Schwann cells (SC): Edema and loss of their plasma membranes in some areas of association with axon terminals as well as abundant collagen fibers associated with SC. Ultrastructural findings, at 10−9 scale: 1) Smooth muscle cells: folded wrapper cores and edema of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum cisterns (RER). 2) Myelinated axon terminals: Loss of synaptic vesicles. 3) Fibroblasts: One observes mitochondria and cisterns of RER with alterations. All these alterations can generate intestinal and anorectal dysfunction in these patients. Conclusions: The HIV causes changes in rectal and muscular mucosa despite HAART treatment with undetectable viral load.

Cell therapy has shown beneficial effects on ventricular function and tissue regeneration in patients with acute and chronic myocardial infarction, although with diverse grades of variability in the results, possibly by proportion, subtype and cell cycle status. Objective: Identify and phenotypically characterize, via CXCR4 and SDF-1 expression, the bone marrow cell subpopulations that are mobilized into the bloodstream in patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Acute Ischemia (AI) such as acute angina and Chronic Ischemia (CI) such as chronic stable angina, and also determine the cell cycle status of these cells. Method: Patients with AMI and AI were recruited in the ICCU, and patients with CI in the departments of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. The quantification of cellular subpopulations was made by cytofluorometry with a FACS caliburcyto fluorometry (Becton Dickinson) with specific FITC-labeled anti human monoclonal antibodies against CD34, CD133, CD117, CD48, CXCR4, SDF-1 and Ki67 (Becton Dickinson). Serum concentration of IL-6 and IL-8 were determined by a sequential solid phase chemiluminescent assay performed in a SIEMENS IMMULITE 1000 Analyzer. Statistical analysis was made with the SPSS version 20.0 for Windows. A p value 3/ml) than that in AI (9.2 ± 1.3 × 103/ml) and CI (6.6 ± 1.1 × 103/ml) patients (p p = 0.22 to 0.39), but interestingly in AMI and AI patients, cells were CXCR4+ in almost half of these mobilized cells, although the proportion was significantly higher in AMI patients (46.8% ± 7.1% to 55.7% ± 6.3% vs 23% ± 1.6% to 28.4% ± 2.1%, p = 0.03 to 0.05). A similar behavior was observed with the Ki67 antibody (29.9% ± 2.1% to 36.1% ± 6.3% vs 10% ± 1.2% to 24% ± 1.1%, p = 0.001 to 0.05). Bivariate analysis of the results showed a significant correlation of the cell proportion in AMI but not in AI and CI patients (p = 0.001 to 0.05;0.12 to 0.87 and 0.17 to 0.92 respectively). Synthesis of the Prospective Anticancer Molecule Perillic Acid from Orange Essential Oil by the Yeast <i>Yarrowia lipolytica</i>

The bioconversion of the hydrophobic and volatile limonene to perillic acid, a potential anticancer agent, by the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica was studied in two steps. Firstly, experimental design was used for process optimization using high-purity limonene as substrate and secondly orange essential oil containing 89.1% limonene was used as substrate under the previously optimized conditions. Limonene concentration and pH were identified by fractional factorial design as significant factors and were optimized by central composite design. Under optimized process conditions (0.16% (v/v) limonene;pH 6.9), the 24 h biotransformation process resulted in the accumulation of 0.368 g·L-1 of perillic acid corresponding to a molar yield of 23.1%. A subsequent substrate addition under the same reaction conditions doubled perillic acid concentration to 0.793 g·L-1 and a molar yield of 24.2%. The use of orange essential oil under the optimized reaction conditions increased both perillic acid accumulation and yield to 0.872 g·L-1 and 29.7%, respectively. The robustness of Y. lipolytica allowed the efficient biotransformation of a crude by-product of the citrus industry into a valuable fine chemical.
