Triterpenes from Cabralea canjerana as in Vitro Inhibitors to Light Reactions of Photosynthesis

Aims: Cabraleadiol (1), Ocotilone (2) and Odoratone (3) are three triterpenes isolated from Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart. (Meliaceae). They were chemically characterized, and their effect was tested on the light reaction of photosynthesis. study Design: Natural products were used as models to find new models for inhibitors of photosynthesis. Place and Duration of study: Departmento de Química, Universidade Federal de são Carlos and Departmento de Bioquímica, Facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México, between May 2013 and January 2014. Methodology: The natural products had their effect on the light reaction of photosynthesis studied by pollarography and Chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence transients. Results: The compounds inhibited ATP synthesis and electron transport rate (basal, phosphorylating and uncoupled). Therefore, they act as Hill reactions inhibitors. Their inhibition site were located in the range of electron flow from OEC complex and between P680 to QA of Ps II, and inhibited the photosystem II (Ps II) by inducing the appearance of a K-band which is an indicative that the photochemical apparatus is failing at the donor side of Ps II interacting at the OEC complex and by transforming active reaction centers to “heat sinks” or the formation of silent reaction centers unable to reduce QA. Conclusion: Furthermore, these triterpenes inhibit Ps II and induce the appearance of small G band which is related with the decreased plastoquinone (PQ) pool reduction.

Dehghan and Hajarian, [4], investigated the matrix equations A^TXB＋B^TX^TA = C and A^TXB ＋ B^TXA = C providing inequalities for the determinant of the solutions of these equations. In the same paper, the authors presented a lower bound for the product of the eigenvalues of the solutions to these matrix equations. Inspired by their work, we give some generalizations of Dehghan and Hajarian results. Using the theory of the numerical ranges, we present an inequality involving the trace of C when A, B, X are normal matrices satisfying A^T B = BA^T.

sarcopenia and Anemia Are Predictors of Poor Prognostic in Cervical Cancer Patients

Objective: Evaluate pretreatment sarcopenia and anemia as prognostic factors in women undergoing treatment for cervical cancer (CC) with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Methods: 151 women with CC were analysed in this cohort study. Pretreatment computed tomography (CT) images were analysed to assess skeletal muscle index (sMI). Hazard ratios (HR) and multivariate Cox proportional HR were used to analyse association between low sMI, age, body mass index (BMI), haemoglobin levels, histological type, and International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage with PFs and Os. Results: A total of 151 patients were included, 53 (35.1%) presented pretreatment sarcopenia;51 (34%) stage I/II and 100 (66%) stage III/IV. Among those patients in advanced stage (III/IV) 37 (70%) (p = 0.28) were sarcopenic at the beginning of treatment. sarcopenia was associated with worse progression-free survival (PFs) and overall survival (Os) in our cohort [HR 0.97 (p = 0.01)] [HR 0.73 (p = 0.001)], as well as anemia [HR 0.73 (p = 0.001)] [HR 0.78 (p = 0.001)]. Linear regression models indicated that despite showing no association with age, neutrophil or platelet counts, sarcopenia was associated with pretreatment anemia levels (p = 0.01). After a multivariate analysis, only haemoglobin (anemia) and complete CCRT remained associated with PFs and Os. sarcopenia and anemia were associated with worse PFs and Os in FIGO stage I/II. Conclusion: Pretreatment sarcopenia was significantly associated with low haemoglobin levels. Anemia and incomplete CCRT were independently associated with poor prognosis in women with CC. Pretreatment sarcopenia, as low sMI, was a predictor of poor prognostic in early stages of CC.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBs) remains a clinical challenge in the 21sup>stsup> century. It’s the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal condition and also the most common reason for referral to gastroenterology clinics. Its can affect up to one in five people at some point in their lives, and has a significantly impact of life quality and health care utilization. The prevalence varies according to country and criteria used to define IBs. Various mechanisms and theories have been proposed about its etiology, but the biopsychosocial model is the most currently accepted for IBs. The complex of symptoms would be the result of the interaction between psychological, behavioral, psychosocial and environmental factors. The diagnosis of IBs is not confirmed by a specific test or structural abnormality. It is made using criteria based on clinical symptoms such as Rome criteria, unless the symptoms are thought to be atypical. Today the Rome Criteria III is the current gold-standard for the diagnoses of IBs. secure positive evidence of IBs by means of specific disease marker is currently not possible and cannot be currently recommended for routine diagnosis. There is still no clinical evidence to recommend the use of biomarkers in blood to diagnose IBs. However, a number of different changes in IBs patients were demonstrated in recent years, some of which can be used in the future as a diagnostic support. IBs has no definitive treatment but could be controlled by non-pharmacologic management eliminating of some exacerbating factors such certain drugs, stressor conditions and changes in dietary *** traditional pharmacologic management of IBs has been symptom based and several drugs have been used. However, the cornerstone of its therapy is a solid patient physician relationship. This review will provide a summary of pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria and current and emerging therapies for IBs.

Differential expression of apoptosis related proteins and nitric oxide synthases in Epstein Barr associated gastric carcinomas

AIM： To determine the incidence of Epstein Barr virus associated gastric carcinoma （GC） in Brazil and compare the expressions of apoptosis related proteins and nitric oxide synthases between EBV positive and negative gastric carcinoma. METHODs： In situ hybridization of EBV-encoded small RNA-1 （EBER-1） and PCR was performed to identify the presence of EBV in GCs. Immunohistochemistry was used to identify expressions of bcl-2, bcl-xl, bak, bax, p53, NOs-1, NOs-2, and NOs-3 proteins in 25 EBV positive GCs and in 103 EBV negative GCs. REsULTs： 12% of the cases of GC （25/208） showed EBER-1 and EBNA-1 expression. The cases were preferentially of diffuse type with intense lymphoid infiltrate in the stroma. EBV associated GCs showed higher expression of bcl-2 protein and lower expression of bak protein than in EBV negative GCs. Indeed, expressions of NOs-1 and NOs-3 were frequently observed in EBV associated GCs. CONCLUsION： Our data suggest that EBV infection may protect tumor cells from apoptosis, giving them the capacity for permanent cell cycling and proliferation. In addition, EBV positive GCs show high expression of constitutive NOs that could influence tumor progression and aggressiveness.

Interaction between surface gravity wave and submerged horizontal flexible structures

Interactions between surface gravity wave and submerged horizontal flexible structures are studied under the assumption of small amplitude water wave theory and structural response. The generalized dispersion relation associated with surface gravity wave interaction with submerged horizontal flexible plate is analyzed to understand the characteristics of the two propagating modes due to the presence of the free surface and submerged horizontal plate. The phase and group velocities are studied in order to analyze the effect of submerged flexible plate on gravity wave motion. The expansion formulae based on Green’s function technique and eigenfunction expansion method using Fourier transform with appropriate orthogonal mode-coupling relation associated with surface gravity wavemaker problems are derived and compared in both the cases of water of finite and infinite depths. The usefulness of the expansion formulae is demonstrated by deriving the solution for surface gravity wave interaction with submerged articulated flexible plate in water of finite depth. several numerical results on reflection and transmission coefficients related to submerged flexible plate are presented in order to understand the effect of submerged flexible structure on surface wave motion in different cases.

Ultrasound-based techniques for the diagnosis of liver steatosis

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the leading cause of diffuse liver *** accurate estimate of the fat in the liver is important in the diagnostic work-up of patients with NAFLD because the degree of liver steatosis is linked to the metabolic syndrome and the cardiovascular ***(Us)B-mode imaging allows to subjectively estimate the fatty infiltration in the liver;however,it has a low performance for the detection of mild *** Us is based on the analysis of the radiofrequency echoes detected by an Us system,and it allows to calculate a backscatter coefficient or an attenuation coefficient or the sound *** estimation of the backscatter coefficient is rather cumbersome and requires the use of a phantom for addressing all sources of *** attenuation parameter(CAP)available on the Fibroscan system(Echosens,France)measures the attenuation of the Us *** is accurate in grading fatty infiltration-even though there is an overlap between consecutive grade of liver steatosis-and the values are not influenced by liver *** Us manufacturers are developing or have already developed software for quantifying the attenuation of the Us *** results show that proprietary technologies implemented in Us systems seem more accurate than CAP for grading liver *** available method for quantifying liver steatosis is based on the computation of the sound speed and the initial results appear promising.
