Removal of antibiotics in a parallel-plate thin-film-photocatalytic reactor: Process modeling and evolution of transformation by-products and toxicity

Photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole（sMX） antibiotic has been studied under recycling batch and homogeneous flow conditions in a thin-film coated immobilized system namely parallel-plate（PPL） reactor. Experimentally designed, statistically evaluated with a factorial design（FD） approach with intent to provide a mathematical model takes into account the parameters influencing process performance. Initial antibiotic concentration, UV energy level, irradiated surface area, water matrix（ultrapure and secondary treated wastewater） and time, were defined as model parameters. A full of 2~5 experimental design was consisted of 32 random experiments. PPL reactor test experiments were carried out in order to set boundary levels for hydraulic, volumetric and defined defined process parameters. TTIP based thin-film with polyethylene glycol ＋ TiO2 additives were fabricated according to pre-described methodology. Antibiotic degradation was monitored by High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis while the degradation products were specified by LC–TOF-Ms analysis. Acute toxicity of untreated and treated sMX solutions was tested by standard Daphnia magna method. Based on the obtained mathematical model, the response of the immobilized PC system is described with a polynomial equation. The statistically significant positive effects are initial sMX concentration,process time and the combined effect of both, while combined effect of water matrix and irradiated surface area displays an adverse effect on the rate of antibiotic degradation by photocatalytic oxidation. Process efficiency and the validity of the acquired mathematical model was also verified for levofloxacin and cefaclor antibiotics. Immobilized PC degradation in PPL reactor configuration was found capable of providing reduced effluent toxicity by simultaneous degradation of sMX parent compound and TBPs.

Habitat use and demography of Mus musculus in a rural landscape of Argentina

The main goal of the paper was to determine the habitat distribution of the house mouse(Mus musculus)within a rural landscape of Buenos Aires province,*** also studied the seasonal variation in abundance and reproductive *** habitats studied were poultry farms,human houses in a small village,cropfields,pastures,cropfield and pasture edges,riparian habitats(streams),railway embankments and *** captured 817 *** and 690 individuals of 5 native rodent *** was captured in poultry farms,houses,riparian habitats,cropfield and borders,but it showed a significantly higher abundance in poultry farms compared to the other *** presence outside poultry farms was significantly related to the distance to streams and poultry *** mean trapping success index of *** did not show significant variations between periods,but the proportion of active males was significantly higher in the spring-summer period than in the autumn-winter *** captures of *** in cropfields,borders and riparian habitats occurred in the spring-summer *** capture of *** in many types of habitats suggests that it can disperse outside poultry farms,and streams may be used as corridors.

Extracellular HIV Tat and Tat cysteine rich peptide increase CCR5 expression in monocytes

In our previous work we reported that HIV Tat and 6 cysteine rich peptides of Tat induce tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-induced ligand (TRAIL) in human monocytes (Yang et al., 2003). Here our results showed that HIV Tat and Tat cysteine rich peptide increase CCR5 expression in human monocytes, and this activity is inhibited by rabbit anti-Tat. Boiled Tat does not increase CCR5 expression in monocytes. These results provide insight into a new mechanism by which HIV Tat plays a key role in the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection.

Optimized design and integration of energy storage in solar-Assisted Ground-source Heat Pump systems

The integrated use of multiple renewable energy sources to increase the efficiency of heat pump systems,such as in solar Assisted Geothermal Heat Pumps(sAGHP),may lead to significant benefits in terms of increased efficiency and overall system performance especially in extreme climate contexts,but requires careful integrated optimization of the different system *** particular,thermal storages take a fundamental role in optimizing the integration of renewable energy sources and the system *** work investigates the potential design optimization of a sAGHP system in a mountain site by exploring many different alternatives to optimize the mutual relationship between the solar field,the geothermal field and the water thermal *** is done through an original simulation-based multi-objective optimization framework considering energy efficiency and economic feasibility,which allows appraising the impact of the different design alternatives on the overall system performance and on the dynamics of the different system *** identify a set of optimized system configurations that optimize the integrated exploitation of the different thermal sources showing a potential increase of the overall system performance leading to 34%lower global cost compared to the initial *** robustness of the optimal design solutions is reported with respect to the current context of high economic uncertainty.

Evolution of the ring-like vortices and spike structure in transitional boundary layers

At the late stage of transitional boundary layers, the nonlinear evolution of the ring-like vortices and spike structures and their effects on the surrounding flow were studied by means of direct numerical simulation with high order accuracy. A spatial transition of the flat-plate boundary layers in the compressible flow was conducted. Detailed numerical results with high resolution clearly represented the typical vortex structures, such as ring-like vortices and so on, and induced ejection and sweep events. It was verified that the formation of spike structures in transitional boundary layers had close relationship with ring-like vortices. Especially, compared to the newly observed positive spike structure in the experiments, the same structure was found in the present numerical simulations, and the mechanism was also studied and analyzed.

The effect of carbon nanotubes and polypropylene fibers on bond of reinforcing bars in strain resilient cementitious composites

stress transfer between reinforcing bars and concrete is engaged through rib translation relative to concrete, and comprises longitudinal bond stresses and radial pressure. The radial pressure is equilibrated by hoop tension undertaken by the concrete cover. Owing to concrete＇s poor tensile properties in terms of strength and deformability, the equilibrium is instantly released upon radial cracking of the cover along the anchorage with commensurate abrupt loss of the bond strength. Any improvement of the matrix tensile properties is expected to favorably affect bond in terms of strength, resilience to pullout slip, residual resistance and controlled *** aim of this paper is to investigate the local bond of steel bars developed in adverse tensile stress conditions in the concrete cover. In the tests, the matrix comprises a novel, strain resilient cementitious composite （sRCC） reinforced with polypropylene fibers （PP） with the synergistic action of carbon nano-tubes （CNT）. Local bond is developed over a short anchorage length occurring in the constant moment region of a four-point bending short beam. Parameters of investigation were the material structure （comprising a basic control mix, reinforced with CNTs and/or PP fibers） and the age of testing. Accompanying tests used to characterize the cementitious material were also conducted. The test results illustrate that all the benefits gained due to the synergy between PP fibers and CNTs in the matrix, namely the maintenance of the multi-cracking effect with time, the increased strength and deformability as well as the highly increased material toughness, were imparted in the recorded bond response. The local bond response curves thus obtained were marked by a resilient appearance exhibiting sustained strength up to large levels of controlled bar-slip; the elasto-plastic bond response envelope was a result of the confining synergistic effect of CNTs and the PP fibers, and it occurred even without bar yielding.

Poor maternal nutrition inhibits muscle development in ovine offspring

Background： Maternal over and restricted nutrition has negative consequences on the muscle of offspring by reducing muscle fiber number and altering regulators of muscle growth. To determine if over and restricted maternal nutrition affected muscle growth and gene fed 60%, 100% or 140% of National Research Council and protein expression in offspring, 36 pregnant ewes were requirements from d 31 ＋ 1,3 of gestation until parturition. Lambs from control-fed （CON）, restricted-fed （REs） or over-fed （OVER） ewes were necropsied within 1 d of birth （n = 18） or maintained on a control diet for 3 mo （n = ] 5）. semitendinosus muscle was collected for immunohistochemistry, and protein and gene expression analysis. Results： Compared with CON, muscle fiber cross-sectional area （CsA） increased in REs （58%） and OVER （47%） lambs at 1 d of age （P〈 0.01）; however at 3 mo, CsA decreased 15% and 17% compared with CON, respectively （P 〈 0.01）. Compared with CON, muscle lipid content was increased in OVER （212.4%） and REs （92.5%） at d 1 （P 〈 0.0001）. Muscle lipid content was increased 36.1% in OVER and decreased 23.6% in REs compared with CON at 3 mo （P 〈 0.0001）. At d 1, myostatin mRNA abundance in whole muscle tended to be greater in OVER （P = 0.07） than CON. Follistatin mRNA abundance increased in OVER （P = 0.04） and tended to increase in REs （P = 0.06） compared with CON at d 1. However, there was no difference in myostatin or follistatin protein expression （P 〉 0.3）. Phosphorylated Akt （ser473） was increased in REs at 3 mo compared with CON （P = 0.006）. Conclusions： In conclusion, maternal over and restricted nutrient intake alters muscle lipid content and growth of offspring, possibly through altered gene and protein expression.
