Comparing Land Degradation and Regeneration Trends in China Drylands

The aim of this paper is to offer a statistically sound method to make a precise account of the speed of land degradation and regeneration *** common analyses of land degradation focus instead on the extent of degraded areas,rather than on the intensity of degradation *** study was implemented for the Potential Extent of Desertification in China(PEDC),composed by arid,semi-arid,and dry sub-humid regions and refers to the period 2002 to *** metrics were standard partial regression coefficients from stepwise regressions,fitted using Net Primary Productivity as the dependent variable,and year number and aridity as *** results indicate that:①the extension of degrading lands(292896 km 2 or 9.12%of PEDC)overcomes the area that is recovering(194560 km 2 or 6.06%of PEDC);and②the intensity of degrading trends is lower than that of increasing trends in three land cover types(grassland,desert,and crops)and in two aridity levels(semi-arid and dry sub-humid).Such an outcome might pinpoint restoration policies by the Chinese government,and document a possible case of hysteresis.

Effective use of FibroTest to generate decision trees in hepatitis C

AIM： To assess the usefulness of FibroTest to forecast scores by constructing decision trees in patients with chronic hepatitis C.METHODS： We used the C4.5 classification algorithm to construct decision trees with data from 261 patients with chronic hepatitis C without a liver biopsy. The FibroTest attributes of age, gender, bilirubin, apolipoprotein, haptoglobin, α2 macroglobulin, and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase were used as predictors, and the FibroTest score as the target. For testing, a 10-fold cross validation was used.RESULTS： The overall classification error was 14.9% （accuracy 85.1%）. FibroTest＇s cases with true scores of FO and F4 were classified with very high accuracy （18/20 for FO, 9/9 for FO-1 and 92/96 for F4） and the largest confusion centered on F3. The algorithm produced a set of compound rules out of the ten classification trees and was used to classify the 261 patients. The rules for the classification of patients in FO and F4 were effective in more than 75% of the cases in which they were tested.CONCLUSION： The recognition of clinical subgroups should help to enhance our ability to assess differences in fibrosis scores in clinical studies and improve our understanding of fibrosis progression,

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is one of the most frequent neoplasms and an important cause of mortality in the developed *** cancer is caused by both genetic and environmental factors although 35%of the variation in CRC susceptibility involves inherited genetic *** syndromes account for about5%of the total burden of CRC,with Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis the most common *** hereditary forms,there is an important fraction of CRC cases that present familial aggregation for the disease with an unknown germline genetic *** can be also considered as a complex disease taking into account the common diseasecommom variant hypothesis with a polygenic model of inheritance where the genetic components of common complex diseases correspond mostly to variants of low/moderate *** far,30 common,low-penetrance susceptibility variants have been identified for ***,new sequencing technologies including exomeand whole-genome sequencing have permitted to add a new approach to facilitate the identification of new genes responsible for human disease *** using whole-genome sequencing,germline mutations in the POLE and POLD1 genes have been found to be responsible for a new form of CRC genetic predisposition called polymerase proofreading-associated polyposis.

Overexpression of neurotrophic factors in nigral dopamine neurons is a promising approach to reverse neurodegeneration of the nigrostriatal dopamine system,a hallmark in Parkinson's *** human cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor(h CDNF)has recently emerged as a strong candidate for Parkinson's disease *** study shows that h CDNF expression in dopamine neurons using the neurotensinpolyplex nanoparticle system reverses 6-hydroxydopamine-induced morphological,biochemical,and behavioral *** independent electron microscopy techniques showed that the neurotensin-polyplex nanoparticles containing the h CDNF gene,ranging in size from 20 to 150 nm,enabled the expression of a secretable h CDNF in *** injection in the substantia nigra compacta on day 21 after the 6-hydroxydopamine lesion resulted in detectable h CDNF in dopamine neurons,whose levels remained constant throughout the study in the substantia nigra compacta and *** with the lesioned group,tyrosine hydroxylase-positive(TH^(+))nigral cell population and TH+fiber density rose in the substantia nigra compacta and striatum after h CDNF *** increase inβIII-tubulin and growth-associated protein 43 phospho-S41(GAP43 p)followed TH^(+)cell recovery,as well as dopamine and its catabolite *** reversal(80%)of drugactivated circling behavior and full recovery of spontaneous motor and non-motor behavior were ***-derived neurotrophic factor recovery in dopamine neurons that also occurred suggests its participation in the neurotrophic *** findings support the potential of nanoparticle-mediated h CDNF gene delivery to develop a disease-modifying treatment against Parkinson's *** Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados approved our experimental procedures for animal use(authorization No.162-15)on June 9,2019.
