Hepatitis B and inflammatory bowel disease: Role of antiviral prophylaxis

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a very common infection worldwide. Its reactivation in patients receiving immunosuppression has been widely described as being associated with significant morbidity and mortality unless anti-viral prophylaxis is administered. Treatment in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients has changed in recent years and immunosuppression and biological therapies are now used more frequently than before. Although current studies have reported an incidence of hepatitis B in inflammatory bowel disease patients similar to that in the general population, associated liver damage remains an important concern in this setting. Liver dysfunction may manifest in several ways, from a subtle change in serum aminotransferase levels to fulminant liver failure and death. Patients undergoing double immunosuppression are at a higher risk, and reactivation usually occurs after more than one year of treatment. As preventive measures, all IBD patients should be screened for HBV markers at diagnosis and those who are positive for the hepatitis B surface antigen should receive antiviral prophylaxis before undergoing immunosuppression in order to avoid HBV reactivation. Tenofovir/entecavir are preferred to lamivudine as nucleos(t)ide analogues due to their better resistance profile. In patients with occult or resolved HBV, viral reactivation does not appear to be a relevant issue and regular DNA determination is recommended during immunosuppression therapy. Paclitaxel （PTX）, one of the most effective cytotoxins for the treatment of breast and lung cancer, is limited by its severe side effects and low tumor selectivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanoparticles （NPs） have been used for the first time to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, employing a novel technique in which a gold core in the center of the NP is further oxidized to produce the hollow structure into which PTX molecules can be incorporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physicochemical properties and displayed excellent biocompatibility when tested on blood （no hemolysis） and cell cultures （no cytotoxicity）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs significantly increased PTX cytotoxicity in human lung （A-549） and breast （MCF-7） cancer cells with a significant reduction of PTX ICs0 （from 5.9 to 3.6 nM in A-549 and from 13.75 to 4.71 nM in MCF-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP caused a decrease in volume of A-549 and MCF-7 multicellular tumor spheroids （MTS）, an in vitro system that mimics in vivo tumors, in comparison to free PTX. This increased antitumoral activity is accompanied by efficient cell internalization and increased apoptosis, especially in lung cancer MTS. Our results offer the first evidence that hollow- p4VP NPs can improve the antitumoral activity of PTX. This system can be used as a new nanoplatform to overcome the limitations of current breast and lung cancer treatments.

Green and Sustainable Software has emerged as a new and highly active area in the software *** several years of research and work,we believe that it is now necessary to obtain a general snapshot of how the research in this area is *** do so,we have applied the 5 Ws(why,when,who,where,and what),a formula for getting the complete story on a *** have therefore carried out a study,using 542 publications related to Green and Sustainable Software research;these were recovered using *** results obtained allow us to conclude that it is important to identify key elements of the research to allow researchers be fully aware of the state of the research on Green and Sustainable Software(why);the study uses papers published between 2000 and the beginning of November 2018(when);the most prolific authors are mainly from Europe,although the USA is the most active country,Green and Sustainable Software being a very interactive area with a good number of multinational publications(who);the top five keywords related to sustainable aspects are Green Software,Green IT,Software Sustainability,Energy Consumption,and Energy Efficiency(what);finally,as regards the places authors prefer to publish in,there is almost a complete balance between conferences and journals,with a trend towards an increase in the number of publications(where).

Unlocking the in vitro anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity of halophyte plants from the southern Portugal

Objective:To evaluate the in vitro anti-Trypanosoma cruzi（***） activity of organic extracts prepared from halophyte species collected in the southern coast of Portugal（Algarve）,and chemically characterize the most active ***:Acetone,dichloromethane and methanol extracts were prepared from 31 halophyte species and tested in vitro against trypomastigotes and intracellular amastigotes of the Tulahuen strain of *** most active extract was fractionated by preparative HPLC-DAD,affording 11 *** most selective fraction was fully characterized by ***:From 94 samples tested,one was active,namely the root dichloromethane extract of Juncus acutus(IC50 < 20 μg/mL).This extract was fractionated by HPLC,affording 11 fractions,one of them containing only a pure compound（juncunol）,and tested for anti-parasitic *** 8(IC50 = 4.1 μg/mL) was the most active,and was further characterized by *** major compounds were phenanthrenes,9,10-dihydrophenanthrenes and ***:Our results suggest that the compounds identified in fraction 8 are likely responsible for the observed anti parasitic *** research is in progress aiming to isolate and identify the specific active *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first report on the in vitro anti *** activity of halophyte species.

A cascade of dramatic physiological events is linked to the sperm acrosome reaction and binding to the oocyte's zona pellucida during human sperm ***,structural and functional sperm changes during capacitation currently remain poorly ***,we performed a multibiomarker approach based on the utilization of sperm concentration,motility,viability,morphology,acrosome reaction,tyrosine phosphorylation,DNA fragmentation,and lectin-binding sites to analyze the impact caused by swim-up selection times(uncapacitated,1 h capacitated,and 4 h capacitated)on sperm function and structure in normozoospermic *** found that a 4 h swim-up capacitation increased sperm quality,because a large number of cells with normal morphology and lower DNA fragmentation rates were ***,the long-term capacitation induced a higher percentage of cells with tyrosine phosphorylation of the principal piece as well as a redistribution of lectin-binding ***,the multivariate biomarkers analyzed showed a less variable distribution on spermatozoa recovered after 4 h capacitation than that with the shorter capacitation *** findings stress the importance of capacitation time as a relevant factor in sperm quality with potential biological reproductive implications both for basic research and in assisted reproduction techniques.

Telaprevir and Boceprevir are the first direct acting antivirals approved for chronic hepatitis C in combination with peg-interferon alfa and *** due to myelotoxicity caused by these drugs may occur,but severe hematological abnormalities or aplastic anemia(AA) have not been *** collected all cases of severe pancytopenia observed during triple therapy with telaprevir in four Spanish centers since approval of the drug in *** 142 cirrhotic patients receiving treatment,7 cases of severe pancytopenia(5%) were identified and three were consistent with the diagnosis of *** age was 59 years,five patients had compensated cirrhosis and two patients had severe hepatitis C recurrence after liver *** pancytopenia was diagnosed a median of 10 wk after the initiation of *** patients had pre-treatment hematological abnormalities related to *** six patients,antiviral treatment was interrupted at the onset of hematological *** patients died due to septic complications and one patient due to acute alveolar *** remaining patients *** pancytopenia and especially AA,are not rare during triple therapy with telaprevir in patients with advanced liver *** monitoring is imperative in this setting to promptly detect serious hematological disorders and to prevent further complications.

Does cypermethrin affect enzyme activity, respiration rate and walking behavior of the maize weevil （Sitophilus zeamais）？

Insecticides cause a range of sub-lethal effects on targeted insects, which are frequently detrimental to them. However, targeted insects are able to cope with insecti- cides within sub-lethal ranges, which vary with their susceptibility. Here we assessed the response of three strains of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky （Coleoptera.＂ Curculionidae） to sub-lethal exposure to the pyrethoid insecticide cypermethrin. We ex- pected enzyme induction associated with cypermethrin resistance since it would aid the resistant insects in surviving such exposure. Lower respiration rate and lower activity were also expected in insecticide-resistant insects since these traits are also likely to favor survivorship under insecticide exposure. Curiously though, cypermethrin did not affect ac- tivity of digestive and energy metabolism enzymes, and even reduced the activity of some enzymes （particularly for cellulase and cysteine-proteinase activity in this case）. There was strain variation in response, which may be （partially） related to insecticide resistance in some strains. Sub-lethal exposure to cypermethrin depressed proteolytic and mainly cellulolytic activity in the exposed insects, which is likely to impair their fitness. However, such exposure did not affect respiration rate and walking behavior of the insects （except for the susceptible strain where walking activity was reduced）. Walking activity varies with strain and may minimize insecticide exposure, which should be a concern, particularly if associated with （physiological） insecticide resistance.

Emerging Technologies As Drivers for Developing Organizational Innovation Competencies

This article will analyze importance of emergent technologies as drivers for developing organizational innovation competencies. The relevance of this research is based on the approach to emergent technologies articulating them with the competencies development models and organizational innovation theories. To formulate the research problem, two analytical dimensions were considered： emergent technologies and organizational innovation competencies anchored to the following research question： What are the organizational innovation competencies that rise from emergent technologies adoption by companies？ Based on the literature review of prospective studies conducted in economic clusters in Portugal, the organizational innovation competencies that raised from the adoption of emerging technologies were investigated and identified： internet, mobile technologies, artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, and nanotechnologies. The methodology used was document analysis, based on the prospective sectorial studies on Portuguese industry.

Lexis in Dionysius the Areopagite

In his Commentary on Plato＇s Phaedo, Damascius establishes a close relation between destination （lexis）, divine Justice, and life dignity （kat＇aian） of every soul. Among several meanings of destination, the most relevant one is related to the condition of the soul after death. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to consider how this neoplatonic term is conceived in Dionysius Areopagite. For that purpose, the author will analyze such term widely used in the chapter 7 of Ecclesiastic Hierarchy in which Dionysius deals with the funerary rite and in which the notes of the dionysian eschatology are found. In other words, Dionysius＇ use of this term combines a spiritual and a metaphysic perspective. The former is part of the representation of the dionysian universe in which even the angels receive the name of lexeis and are distinguished by their never ending movement around the Thearchia; the latter is present among humans as a call to imitate such angelic condition. Such imitation is not possible without the effort needed to behave in agreement with an honorable lifestyle （kat＇axian, neoplatonic expression also used by Dionysius） that opens the door to a condition or rank granted to man after death.
