The present study investig.tes the effect of a silver (Ag.-containing.nanocomposite coating.on Staphylococcus epidermidis adhesion and icaA g.ne expression. Bacterial interactions with org.nic coating. with and without Ag.nanoclusters were assessed throug. a combination of both conventional phenotypic analysis, using.microscopy, and g.notypic analysis, using.the relative reverse transcription Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). The results sug.est that the incorporation of Ag.in org.nic coating. can sig.ificantly decrease bacterial adhesion and viability with time, in comparison to the org.nic coating.alone. The initial Ag.release thoug. at concentrations lower than the bactericidal, sig.ificantly increased icaA g.ne expression for the bacteria interacting.with the Ag.containing.coating.two hours post adhesion, especially under the hig.er shear rate. Stress-inducing.conditions such as sub-bactericidal concentrations of Ag.and hig. shear rate can therefore increase icaA expression, indicating.that analysis of g.ne expression can not only refine our knowledg. of bacterial-material interactions, but also yield novel biomarkers for potential use in assessing.biomaterials antimicrobial performance.

Comparison of Traps Collecting.Propolis by Honey Bees

The last few years numerous publications have been published about the properties and plant orig.n of propolis, the g.ue-like resinous product collected by honeybees. Althoug., only one scientific experiment has been previously conducted on propolis collection techniques by honey bees, making.the relative literature extremely limited in this area. The present study scopes to evaluate the effect of the trap types on the quantity of propolis collected by honeybees. For this reason, at two different locations, five different types of propolis collection traps, applied on Lang.troth bee hives, were tested: 3 hand-cut screens plus one commercial screen on the top bars, as well as a lateral side modification of a Lang.troth hive. Results show that two hand-cut screens with smaller opening. (1 × 1 mm and 2 × 2 mm) as well as the commercial screen collected sig.ificantly more propolis than the others (F4,41 = 43.21, P 0.0001). Furthermore, the two hand-cut screens filled faster with propolis.
