The incidence of Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MACPD) has been globally increasing. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of clinical characteristics and treatment response among patients in the Amazon region of Brazil and conduct a retrospective cohort study at a prominent referral hospital in the State of Par, Brazil, from 2012 to 2020. The M. avium group represented 58.9% of cases, followed by M. intracellulare (35.7%), M. colombiense (3.6%), and M. chimaera (1.8%). The majority of patients (73.2%) were female and with an average age of 63 years. Primary clinical manifestations included persistent cough and sputum production. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) averaged 2.47, with 36.3% of patients having a CCI score equal to higher than 3. Notably, over 70% of patients had received treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis before initiating treatment for MAC infection. The fibrocavitary radiologic form was the most prevalent (55.4%), frequently exhibiting a bilateral distribution (53.6%). Antimicrobial susceptibility revealed a significant prevalence of MAC resistance to drugs in the therapeutic regimen. Despite this, most of the patients experienced clinical improvement (50%). In conclusion, this study highlights a higher prevalence of MAC infections among middle-aged women, with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis treatment and presenting the fibrocavitary radiological form was predominant.

Certain traits of recipient environments,such as the availability of limiting resources,strongly determine the establishment success and spread of non-native *** limitations may be overcome through behavioral plasticity,allowing them to exploit alternative ***,we show how a secondary cavity nester bird,the rose-ringed parakeet Psittacula krameri,innovates its nesting behavior as a response to the shortage of tree cavities for nesting in its invasive range in Tenerife(Canary Islands).We observed that some breeding pairs excavated their own nest cavities in palms,thus becoming primary cavity nester,whereas others occupied nests built with wood sticks by another invasive species,the monk parakeet Myiopsitta *** use of these novel nesting strategies increased the number of breeding pairs by up to 52%over 6 years,contributing to a 128.8%increase of the whole *** nests were located at greater heights above ground and were more aggregated around conspecifics but did not result in greater breeding success than natural *** of monk parakeet colonies by rose-ringed parakeets also benefited the former species through a protective-nesting association against nest *** results show how an invasive species innovate nesting behaviors and increase nest-site availability in the recipient environment,thus facilitating its population growth and invasion *** behavioral innovations in other invasive rose-ringed parakeet populations may be overlooked,and should be considered for effective management plans.

In modeling fluidized bed gasification experiments,equilibrium and CFD models are valuable *** existence of multi-dimensional effects inside the reactor vessel due to the kinetics of the process and the fluid dynamics phenomena could result in deviation from the zero-dimensional *** models integrating kinetics and hydrodynamics are being developed by using a computer fluid dynamics(CFD)*** objective of this investigation is to assess and compare the adequacy of zero-dimensional and CFD approaches in modeling fluidized bed gasification regarding a semi-industrial scale(numerical results are validated under experimental runs).Results show that the zero-dimensional model based on the approach of dual stage equilibrium performs reasonably well in adequately predicting the product gas composition at different operating conditions and for different feedstocks,although with quantitative ***,the discrepancy depends on the oxygen content of the oxidation agent and on the steam-to biomass ratio decreasing when these parameters *** models provide deeper information being able to estimate the syngas composition or other operating parameter at any point of space and *** of some quantitative discrepancy,the zero-dimensional modeling approach is deemed satisfactory from the viewpoint of the determining design conditions simulation.

Objective: To compare the in vitro antiparasitic activity of aqueous extracts from Ziziphus joazeiro leaves and stem bark against Trypanosoma cruzi, Leishmania braziliensis, and Leishmania infantum, as well as to evaluate its cytotoxicity in mammalian cells, in addition to identifying the chemical composition of the extracts. Methods: Ziziphus joazeiro leaf and stem bark aqueous extracts were prepared by cold extraction maceration and subjected to ultra-efficient liquid chromatography coupled to a quadrupole/time of flight system. The susceptibility assays used Trypanosoma cruzi CLB5 strains and promastigote forms of Leishmania braziliensis and Leishmania infantum for antiparasitic activity of the extracts. Moreover, mammalian fibroblasts NCTC clone 929 were used for cytotoxicity analysis. Results: Terpenoid compounds, flavonoids and phenolic acid were identified in extracts. The stem bark aqueous extracts presented more significant results in terms of antiparasitic activity compared with the leaf aqueous extracts, especially against Leishmania braziliensis and Leishmania infantum promastigote forms with an IC50 < 500 μg/mL. The cytotoxicity evaluation showed moderate toxicity of the stem bark aqueous extracts, which is relevant information for the rational use of this plant part since it is widely used by the population. Conclusions: These preliminary results may contribute to the formulation of new therapeutic agents against this group of neglected diseases, so further investigations are required to delineate the mechanisms of action mainly of the aqueous extract of stem bark of Ziziphus joazeiro.

Anthropogenic impacts to the sediment budget of São Francisco River navigation channel using SWAT

The São Francisco River Basin,located in eastern Brazil,has undergone a significant amount of anthropogenic changes in the last several decades,such as agricultural expansion,irrigation activities,mining,and the construction of large ***,these changes have altered the historic sediment budget and have led to an aggradation of sediments in the navigation channel,impacting the ability to efficiently ship agricultural commodities to regional *** an effort to aid decision makers in future waterway navigation planning,an international partnership between the Brazilian government agency CODEVASF and the US Army Corps of Engineers(USACE)was *** this partnership a SWAT model of the 630000 km2 São Francisco River basin was developed to better understand both the historic and current sediment budget within the navigation *** SWAT model of the São Francisco River Basin was calibrated for hydrology and sediment *** discharges were calibrated at 17 Agência Nacional deÁguas(ANA)gages,with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(NSE)values ranging from 0.42 to 0.75 for an eleven year *** loads were calibrated to an ANA sediment gage located in the Middle São Francisco River Navigation Channel,with a PBIAS(Percent Bias)of *** on model results,the aggradation rate of sediment in the São Francisco River and major tributaries has increased by approximately 20 Mt since Pre-European settlement of the basin(from approximately 7 Mt/a to 27 Mt/a).This increase has contributed to an impaired navigation channel due to shoaling of sandy sediments in the navigation channel.
