In vitro antioxidant,antilipoxygenase and antimicrobial activities of extracts from seven climbing plants belonging to the Bignoniaceae

Objectives： This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant capacity, to determine the anti-inflammatory effect due to lipoxygenase inhibition and to test the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts from leaves of seven climbing species belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. These species are Adenocalyrnrna rnarginatum （Cham.） DC., Amphilophium vauthieri DC., Cuspidaria convoluta （VEIL） A. H. Gentry, Dolichandra dentata （K. Schum.） L. G. Lohmann, Fridericia caudigera （S. Moore） L. G. Lohmann, Fridericia chica （Bonpl.） L. G. Lohmann and Tanaecium selloi （Spreng.） L. G. Lohmann. Methods： The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three methods, 2,2＇-azino-bis（3-ethylbenzothiazo line-6-sulfonic acid）（ABTS）, 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl （DPPH）, and ferric reducing antioxidant power. Lipoxygenase-inhibiting activity was assayed spectrophotometrically; the result was expressed as percent inhibition. The antimicrobial activity was assessed using the agar disk diffusion method. Minimal inhibitory concentration （MIC） and minimal bactericidal]fungicidal concentration were also determined for each extract against 12 pathogenic bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus and seven fungal strains of the Candida genus. The identification of the major compounds present in the most promising extract was established by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results： C convoluta, F. caudigera, and F. chica exhibited the best antioxidant activity by scavenging DPPH and ABTS~ radicals and reducing Fe3＋ ion. These extracts showed a notable inhibition of lipnxygenase. F. caudigera was found to have the lower MIC value against S. aureus strains and six Candida species. The extracts of F. caudigera and C. convoluta were active even against methicillin-resistant S. aureus. C convoluta had higher total phenol content, better antioxidant activity and superior anti- inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Health Care System in Portugal for People with Motor Problems

Purpose: From a social and labor inclusion perspective, the article presents a digital prototype conceptualized to provide a “Diagnostic Page”, which delivers various prescribers and suppliers of support products that mitigate the problems of the respective patients. It also provides a “Patient Card Page”, where all the information about financing the respective products is placed, as well as all the documents likely to be needed for the commercial transactions to be carried out by all the parties involved. It also aims to provide a digital medium to grow a community in this niche market. In the action research methodology approach, the prototype was taken to funding competitions and conferences, where interviews and surveys were carried out, and a number of suggestions were collected on the type of platform to consider in order to respond to the concerns and needs of end users, such as patients, prescribers, suppliers and associations. Methods: The digital platform where the system is hosted uses algorithms that, on the diagnostic page, consider keywords used by patients and return a series of prescribers and suppliers of support products, in which the corresponding percentage of attenuation is taken into account and the best solution found to overcome the level of difficulty presented by the respective patients is delivered. Results and Conclusions: It is hoped that, with this platform, people with motor problems will be able to obtain their diagnosis instantly, through the algorithm implemented, and that they will immediately be provided with a series of prescribers, suppliers and support products best suited to their needs, as well as all the information or conditions necessary to purchase or finance them. On the other hand, prescribers, suppliers and associations have an online platform where they can offer their consultations, products and other support as freelancers who are part of a community.

Degradation of indomethacin in river water under stress and non-stress laboratory conditions:degradation products,long-term evolution and adsorption to sediment

The pharmaceutical compound indomethacin is not totally removed in wastewater treatment plants,whose effluents flow into aquatic environments;concentrations in the 0.1-100 ng/L range are commonly found in surface waters,and its fate is unknown.Here,biological,photochemical and thermal degradation assays were conducted under stress and non-stress conditions to estimate its degradation rate in river water and establish its degradation products over time.The results revealed that direct sunlight irradiation promoted the complete degradation of indomethacin（2 μg/L） in less than 6 hr,but indomethacin was detected over a period of 4 months when water was kept under the natural day-night cycle and the exposure to sunlight was partially limited,as occurs inside a body of water.The biological degradation in water was negligible,while the hydrolysis at pH 7.8 was slow.Residues were monitored by ultra-pressure liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight/mass spectrometry after solid-phase extraction,and six degradation products were found;their structures were proposed based on the molecular formulae and fragmentation observed in high-resolution tandem mass spectra.4-Chlorobenzoic and 2-acetamido-5-methoxybenzoic acids were the long-term transformation products,persisting for at least 30 weeks in water kept under non-stress conditions.Furthermore,the degradation in the presence of sediment was also monitored over time,with some differences being noted.The adsorption coefficients of indomethacin and degradation products on river sediment were calculated;long-term degradation products did not have significant adsorption to sediment.

Social Vulnerability to Natural Hazards in Brazil

Although social vulnerability has recently gained attention in academic studies, Brazil lacks frameworks and indicators to assess it for the entire country.Social vulnerability highlights differences in the human capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. It varies over space and time, and among and between social groups, largely due to differences in socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. This article provides a social vulnerability index(SoVI~) replication study for Brazil and shows how SoVI~concepts and indicators were adapted to the country. SoVI~Brazil follows the place-based framework adopted in the Social Vulnerability Index initially developed for the United States. Using a principal component analysis(PCA), 45city-level indicators were reduced to 10 factors that explain about 67 % of the variance in the data. Clearly identified spatial patterns showed a concentration of the most socially vulnerable cities in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, as well as the social vulnerability of metropolitan areas and state capitals in the South and Southeast regions.The least vulnerable cities are mainly concentrated in the inland regions of the Southeast. Although different factors contribute to the social vulnerability in each city, the overall results confirm the social and economic disparities among Brazilian’s regions and reflect a differential vulnerability to natural hazards at local to regional scales.

Respiratory muscle training with electronic devices in the postoperative period of hepatectomy:A randomized study

BACKGROUND Many studies have been developed with a focus on surgical techniques and drugs,but few that address the importance of rehabilitation in the pre and postoperative period,and the specific benefits for each surgical procedure or type of neoplasm,aiming to minimize respiratory complications in the postoperative period.AIM To compare the strength of the respiratory muscles in the pre and postoperative periods of hepatectomy by laparotomy and to verify the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications among the groups studied.METHODS Prospective,randomized,clinical trial study that compared the inspiratory muscle training group(GTMI)with the control group(CG).After the collection of sociodemographic and clinical data,in both groups,preoperatively,on the first and fifth postoperative days,vital signs and pulmonary mechanics were evaluated and recorded.Albumin and bilirubin values were recorded for the albumin-bilirubin(ALBI)score.After randomization and allocation of participants,those in the CG underwent conventional physical therapy and those in the GTMI underwent conventional physical therapy plus inspiratory muscle,in both groups for five postoperative days.RESULTS Of 76 subjects met eligibility criteria.The collection of 41 participants was completed:20 in the CG and 21 in the GTMI.The most frequent diagnosis was 41.5%with liver metastasis,followed by 26.8%with hepatocellular carcinoma.As for respiratory complications in the GTMI,there was no incidence.In the CG,there were three respiratory complications.Patients in the CG classified as ALBI score 3 presented,statistically,a higher energy value compared to patients classified as ALBI score 1 and 2(P=0.0187).Respiratory variables,measured preoperatively and on the first postoperative day,had a significant drop in both groups from the preoperative to the first postoperative day(P≤0.0001).When comparing the preoperative period and the fifth postoperative day between the GTMI and the CG,the maximal inspiratory pressure variable in the GTMI was statistic

Nowadays there is a continuous demand,particularly from the automotive industry,for cheaper,lighter and more reliable components.It is not surprising then that steel research has been focused during the last decades in new qualities and processes.This paper is dealing with the use of vanadium microalloyed steels on one of those new processes,warm forging.For its low precipitation temperature and its recognised ability to strengthen steel microstructures via austenite grain growth control,precipitation hardening and interference of the static recrystallization process,vanadium in microalloyed steels seem to be an appropriate candidate for warm forging.

Robotic approach is already a new technological system in surgery and its potential advantages such as ergonomics,reduced tremor,3D view and improved instruments movements have been well described(1,2).Concerning the current literature,the studies addressing the robotic benefits on left pancreatectomies are few.However,it has been showed that robotic distal pancreatectomy is both feasible and safe as well as the laparoscopic and the standard open approach.Although,there is a lack of high-level economic studies comparing these techniques(3-6).

Relationship between Rainfall Instability and Agricultural Production in the Brazilian Semi-arid Region

The study evaluated the synergy between the indicators of rainfall,vegetation cover,land productivity in crop production,livestock production and the relationship between the value of aggregate agricultural production and the gross domestic product of municipalities in the semi-arid region of the State of Ceará,Brazil.The data sources are:CearáMeteorology and Water Resources Foundation(FUNCEME)and Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics(IBGE)for the years 1996,2006 and 2017.The research used the methodology of factor analysis(FA),with decomposition into principal components,to construct the index of agricultural production preservation(IAPP).The results showed that 1996 had the best rainfall levels and the highest IAPP values compared to the other years studied.Year of 2017 was the last one of a draught period that extended in Cearáfrom 2012 to 2017.In that year the lowest values for IAPP were observed.The main conclusion is:there was the expected interaction between rainfall and agricultural preservation indicators applied in the semi-arid region of the state of Cearáin the years 1996,2006 and 2017.

Non-redundant Contribution of the Plastidial FAD8 ω-3 Desatumse to Glycerolipid Unsatumtion at Different Temperatures in Arabidopsis

Plastidial ω-3 desaturase FAD7 is a major contributor to trienoic fatty acid biosynthesis in the leaves of Arabidopsis plants. However, the precise contribution of the other plastidial ω-3 desaturase, FAD8, is poorly understood. Fatty acid and lipid analysis of several ω-3 desaturase mutants, including two insertion lines of AtFAD7 and AtFAD8, showed that FAD8 partially compensated the disruption of the AtFAD7 gene at 22℃, indicating that FAD8 was active at this growth temperature, contrasting to previous observations that circumscribed the FAD8 activity at low temperatures. Our data revealed that FAD8 had a higher selectivity for 18：2 acyl-lipid substrates and a higher preference for lipids other than galactolipids, particularly phosphatidylglycerol, at any of the temperatures studied. Differences in the mechanism controlling AtFAD7 and AtFAD8 gene expression at different temperatures were also detected. Confocal microscopy and biochemical analysis of FAD8-YFP over-expressing lines confirmed the chloroplast envelope localization of FAD8. Co-localization experiments suggested that FAD8 and FAD7 might be located in close vicinity in the envelope membrane. FAD8-YFP over-expressing lines showed a specific increase in 18：3 fatty acids at 22℃. Together, these results indicate that the function of both plastidial ω-3 desaturases is coordinated in a non-redundant manner.

In recent years,there has been an increasing interest in finding sustainable strategies for the efficient removal of contaminants from soils.The objective of this review is to examine the biochemical principles of specific genetic modifications in plants,their applications in the field for specific contaminants as phytotechnologies,and their international regulation.In addition,the review presents some biological aspects of rhizosphere-related phenomena,the interactions of organic and inorganic pollutants with plants,and the performance of the phytotechnologies across the continents.During the last few decades,at least eight genera of genetically modified plants(GMPs)have been tested and used for soil remediation with outstanding results.Arabidopsis,Nicotiana,and Oryza are the plant genera most widely studied.Specific plant genes such as metal transporters,chelators,metallothioneins,phytochelatins,and oxygenases have been transferred to plants to improve the elimination of contaminants in soil.We discuss some important aspects of gene manipulation and its application for removal of diverse contaminants.A key challenge faced by phytotechnologies is the final disposal of the generated biomass,from a safety aspect.We argue that the commercial success of phytotechnologies depends on the generation of valuable biomass on contaminated land and its use for bioenergy generation.The use of such technologies would promote a broader understanding of the importance of plants,especially GMPs,in the environment and their contribution to environmental sustainability.
