Cutaneous presentation of gastric cancer is very rare. This case report is about a patient with a metastatic gastric cancer in which the diagnosis was made by a cutaneous biopsy. Following this unusual diagnostic tool, the patient had an intracardiac thrombus, during the chemotherapy regimen, which wasn’t a contraindication for pursuing chemotherapy treatment for over 12 months. This case report is presented to make clinicians aware of a possible atypical sign of presentation of gastrointestinal tract cancer, as well as the importance of clinical suspicion of a well-known problem affecting cancer patients such as venous thromboembolism and its repercussions in the treatment options.

The present study aimed to study the batch production of CGTase (cyclomaltodextrin-glucanotransferase) with Bacillus firmus strain 37 free and immobilized in bovine bone charcoal in batch mode and in a fluidized bed batch reactor, respectively. The bovine bone charcoal is an innovative support material for the immobilization of microorganisms’ producers of enzymes and the use of this microbial support allows its reuse to a significant cost reduction of the process. The batch fermentation with free cells was investigated for 96 h and reached a CGTase activity equal to 0.77 U/mL. When the microorganism was immobilized on bovine bone charcoal (7 g) and cultivated in fluidized bed batch reactor with air supplementation (1 volume of air/volume of medium * minute), the same activity could be achieved in 24 h. The results of enzymatic activity achieved show the potential of CGTase production in a short time with Bacillus firmus strain 37 immobilized in bovine bone charcoal matrix and using air supplementation in the production medium.

A modified approach closely related to the Drude, Lorentz-Drude and Brendel-Bormann theories is developed to fit the experimental data of the optical properties of metals. This work, while simplifying and redefining the parameters of previous models, can be directly compared with the parameters of the Brendel-Bormann model. As a test of validity, our model is compared with the Brendel-Bormann model and experimental data for gold. Our model shows excellent agreement with the experimental data for gold (up to 5 eV) and iron (up to 30 eV).

Dear Editor,Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a traumatic life event that impacts not only the patients but also their families[1].Parents of patients with a cancer diagnosed in early life might experience a life crisis with various negative emotions,including the difficult decision-making in cancer treatment,concerns related to the side effects of the treatment and comorbidities,the worry for progression and relapse of the cancer and the risk of loss of the child due to death,as well as the physical demand of caregiving[2,3].

Despite obvious progress in the treatment of acute forms of ischemic stroke, the risk of this condition remains unacceptably high. Brain infarction in the middle cerebral artery basin occurs in patients with atherosclerosis. The onset of the brain infarction is facilitated by the cessation of circulation (embolism) in conditions of insufficient collateral circulation. The extent of the infarct zone is determined by neuronal death and impaired microcirculation. The development of new methods for effective targeted restorative stroke therapy is crucial for restorative treatment and reducing the risk of mortality after stroke. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) is an approach to limiting reperfusion injury in the ischemic region of the brain after focal ischemia. One of the most commonly used in vivo models in stroke studies is the filament model of Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO) in rats. In our experiment, it was performed for 30 min (J. Koizumi) with subsequent 48-hour reperfusion. Within the first 24 hours after the start of reperfusion several short episodes of ischemia in low limbs were induced. After 48 hours of reperfusion the brains were harvested and stained with TTC. Then we evaluated the effect of RIC within 24 hours ex vivo in rats’ brains, as well as syndecan-1 plasma concentration. Infarct area was assessed by means of Image-Pro program with statistical analysis. Infarct volumes in the model group (31.97% ± 2.5%) were significantly higher compared to the values in the RIC group 48 hours after ischemia-reperfusion (13.6% ± 1.3%) (*P < 0.05). A significant reduction in the area of infarction after RIC is likely due to the effect on the regulation of collateral blood flow in the ischemia area. On the second day after ischemia-reperfusion, tissue swelling was reduced in the RIC group compared to the model group. Toughening of Immiscible rPS/SAN Blends by SEBS Elastomers: Properties and Morphology

In this research, an attempt was made to improve compatibility in a polymer blend composed of incompatible constituents, namely, recycled polystyrene (rPS) and polystyrene-co-acrylonitrile (SAN), through the addition of a compatibilizer. The compatibilizing agent, styrene-ethylenebutadiene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS), was added to the polymer blend in ratios of 5 and 10 wt%. For this purpose, blends of rPS and SAN at different ratios, without and with varying concentrations of compatibilizer, were prepared by melt blending using a co-rotating twin-screwextruder. Mechanical properties including tensile and impact strength, rheological properties (RPA), thermal behaviour (DSC) and morphological characteristics (SEM) were evaluated. According to the results obtained by complex viscosity, the blends behave as a pseudoplastic fluid. The results showed that the addition of SEBS increased the Izod impact strength and the elongation at break and decreased the tensile strength and tensile modulus. rPS/SAN blend modified with SEBS had better mechanical properties than the rPS/SAN alloy. SEM photographs revealed that the SEBS was not only distributed in the SAN phase but also distributed in rPS phase in rPS/SAN/SEBS blend. Furthermore, DSC analysis for blends of rPS/SAN gave a good indication of the improvement on miscibility for most compositions. SEM micrographs of tensile fracture surfaces indicated that the formation of the co-continuous phase and the improvement of interface adhesion are the most important reasons for the excellent tensile properties of the rPS/SAN/SEBS blends. Within the range of analysed compositions, the morphologies investigated by SEM are typical of immiscible blends.
