Forest management for optimizing soil protection:a landscape-level approach

Background:Soil erosion is still identified as the main cause of land degradation worldwide,threatening soil functions and driving several research and policy efforts to reverse *** are commonly associated to some of the most successful land-use systems to achieve soil protection goals,but the extent to which forest ecosystems reduce erosion risks can largely depend on management decisions and associated silvicultural *** tools can assist foresters in solving the complex planning problem they face,concerning the demand for different,and often conflicting,ecosystem services.A resource capability model(RCM),based on a linear programming approach,was built and solved for a forest landscape management problem in Northwest Portugal,over a 90-years planning horizon,divided in 10-years ***:Timber provision and soil erosion were found to be in *** management alternatives included in the model were proven to be sufficiently flexible to obtain the desired level of timber yield,both in volume and even distribution along the planning horizon,while ensuring lower levels of soil loss estimates(below 35 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1)).However,under climate change conditions,compatible with an increasing greenhouse gases emission scenario,potential landscape soil erosion may be enhanced up to 46 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1) in critical ***:Soil conservation concerns in landscape-level forest management planning can be addressed by LPbased optimization *** providing an optimal management solution at landscape level,this approach enables a comprehensive analysis of the RCM,possible trade-offs and potential changes towards uncertainties.

Advances in mass spectrometry(MS)have enabled high-throughput analysis of proteomes in biological *** state-of-the-art MS data analysis relies on database search algorithms to quantify proteins by identifying peptide–spectrum matches(PSMs),which convert mass spectra to peptide *** database search algorithms use distinct search strategies and thus may identify unique ***,no existing approaches can aggregate all user-specified database search algorithms with a guaranteed increase in the number of identified peptides and a control on the false discovery rate(FDR).To fill in this gap,we proposed a statistical framework,Aggregation of Peptide Identification Results(APIR),that is universally compatible with all database search ***,under an FDR threshold,APIR is guaranteed to identify at least as many,if not more,peptides as individual database search algorithms *** of APIR on a complex proteomics standard dataset showed that APIR outpowers individual database search algorithms and empirically controls the *** data studies showed that APIR can identify disease-related proteins and post-translational modifications missed by some individual database search *** APIR framework is easily extendable to aggregating discoveries made by multiple algorithms in other high-throughput biomedical data analysis,e.g.,differential gene expression analysis on RNA sequencing *** APIR R package is available at https://***/yiling0210/APIR.

The rainstorm is believed to contribute flood disasters in upstream catchments,resulting in further consequences in downstream area due to rise of river water *** for flood water level has been challenging,present-ing complex task due to its nonlinearities and *** study proposes a support vector machine regression model,regarded as a powerful machine learning-based technique to forecast flood water levels in downstream area for different lead *** a case study,Kelantan River in Malaysia has been selected to validate the proposed *** water level stations in river basin upstream were identified as input variables.A river water level in downstream area was selected as output of flood forecasting model.A comparison with several bench-marking models,including radial basis function(RBF)and nonlinear autoregres-sive with exogenous input(NARX)neural network was *** results demonstrated that in terms of RMSE error,NARX model was better for the proposed ***,support vector regression(SVR)demonstrated a more consistent performance,indicated by the highest coefficient of determination value in twelve-hour period ahead of forecasting *** findings of this study signified that SVR was more capable of addressing the long-term flood forecasting problems.

Application of several optimization techniques for estimating TBM advance rate in granitic rocks

This study aims to develop several optimization techniques for predicting advance rate of tunnel boring machine(TBM)in different weathered zones of *** this purpose,extensive field and laboratory studies have been conducted along the 12,649 m of the Pahang-Selangor raw water transfer tunnel in *** properties consisting of uniaxial compressive strength(UCS),Brazilian tensile strength(BTS),rock mass rating(RMR),rock quality designation(RQD),quartz content(q)and weathered zone as well as machine specifications including thrust force and revolution per minute(RPM)were measured to establish comprehensive datasets for ***,to estimate the advance rate of TBM,two new hybrid optimization techniques,*** artificial neural network(ANN)combined with both imperialist competitive algorithm(ICA)and particle swarm optimization(PSO),were developed for mechanical tunneling in granitic ***,the new hybrid optimization techniques were compared and the best one was chosen among them to be used for *** evaluate the accuracy of the proposed models for both testing and training datasets,various statistical indices including coefficient of determination(R^2),root mean square error(RMSE)and variance account for(VAF)were utilized *** values of R^2,RMSE,and VAF ranged in 0.939-0.961,0.022-0.036,and 93.899-96.145,respectively,with the PSO-ANN hybrid technique demonstrating the best *** is concluded that both the optimization techniques,***-ANN and ICA-ANN,could be utilized for predicting the advance rate of TBMs;however,the PSO-ANN technique is superior.

Physico-Chemical and Thermal Characterization of Some Lignocellulosic Fibres: Ananas comosus(AC), Neuropeltis acuminatas(NA) and Rhecktophyllum camerunense(RC)

This paper focuses on the study of the physical, biochemical, structural, and thermal properties of plant fibres of Rhecktophyllum camerunense (RC), Neuropeltis acuminatas (NA) and Ananas comosus (AC) from the equatorial region of Cameroon. The traditional use of these fibres inspired researchers to investigated their properties. This study aims at improving the state of knowledge with a view to diversifying applications. The fibres are extracted by retting. Then, their apparent density was measured following the ASTM D792 standard and their water moisture absorption and moisture content were also evaluated. Their molecular structure was studied by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. A quantitative analysis of the biochemical composition was performed according to the analytical technique for the pulp and paper industry (TAPPI). A TGA/DSC analysis was also performed. The results reveal that the AC, NA and RC fibres have densities of 1.26 ± 1.06, 0.846 ± 0.13 and 0.757 ± 0.08 g·cm-3 respectively. They are also hydrophilic with a water absorption rate of 188.64 ± 11.94%, 276.16% ± 8.07% and 198.17% ± 20%. They have a moisture content of 12.21%, 10.36% and 9.37%. The studied fibres exhibit functional groups that are related to the presence of hemicellulose, pectin, lignin and cellulose. The cellulose crystallinity index was found to be 67.99%, 46.5% and 59.72% respectively. The fibres under study have the following chemical composition: an extractive content of 3.07%, 14.77% and 8.74%;a pectin content of 4.15%, 7.69% and 3.45%;a hemicellulose content of 4.90%, 15.33% and 7.42%;a cellulose content of 68.11%, 36.08% and 65.15%;a lignin content of 12.01%, 25.15% and 16.2%;and an ash content of 0.27%, 1.53% and 0.47% respectively. The thermal transitions observed on the thermograms correlate with the TAPPI chemical composition. It is observed that these fibres are thermally stable up to temperatures of 200°C, 220°C and 285°C. Introduction: The composite SonicFillTM (Kerr/Kavo) is indicated for posterior restorations, with a single increment up to 5 mm due to reduced polymerization shrinkage, thus reducing working time. Aim: Evaluation of marginal microleakage with SonicFillTM. Method and Materials: There were sectioned sixty noncarious human molars in the occluso-cervical direction. Class V cavities were prepared on each tooth with gingival margin walls in a standardized way. The specimens were divided into 4 groups: group 1—restored with SonicFillTM (Kerr/Kavo), group 2—restored with FiltekTM SupremeXTE (3M ESPE), group 3—the cavities were not restored;group 4—restored with SonicFillTM (Kerr/Kavo). In groups 1, 2 and 4 the enamel was conditioned with 37% orthophosphoric acid and applied the self-etch adhesive system Clear- fillTM SE BOND (Kuraray). The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37?C for 7 days. After, the specimens, were immersed in a solution of 99mTc-Pertechnetate and the radioactivity was assessed with a gamma camera. The nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni correction at a significance level of 5% were used for the statistical analyses. Results: There are significant differences between the positive and negative control groups and between these and experimental groups (p TM and FiltekTM SupremeXTE. Conclusion: The new composite SonicFillTM and FiltekTM SupremeXTE showed no difference concerning dye penetration. The Sonic- FillTM restorative system showed no influence in concerning microleakage.
