Most long-distance migrating passerines that breed in Europe spend their winters in Africa,with only a few species migrating eastward to spend the non-breeding period in South *** use of the Indo-European flyway is rare and has been poorly studied so ***,it is extremely interesting as within that system we are currently witnessing a recent range expansion of European breeding long distance migrants and thus the lengthening of migration *** may therefore conceal a unique migratory strategies and behaviour that can help us to understand the underlying factors and mechanisms determining the evolution of migration routes,strategies and breeding range *** on light-level geolocator we reveal a first track of the Citrine Wagtail(Motacilla citreola)migration,providing insight into the migration pattern,timing and behaviour of the species that recently has extended its migration ***,the studied individual did not retrace a recent range expansion that runs north and east from the Caspian Sea but followed a migration route running south form the Caspian sea,suggesting possible presence of an alternative species range *** overall migration distance between the breeding site in Poland and the non-breeding site in Pakistan was about 10,420 km and included two endurance movement phases(920 and 2240 km)covering 30%of the whole journey length,with an average movement speed of 574 km/*** explain this migration behaviour as an adaptation for crossing the ecological barriers imposed by arid environments.

On the Importance of the Stokes-Brinkman Equations for Computing Effective Permeability in Karst Reservoirs

Cavities and fractures significantly affect the flow paths in carbonate reservoirs and should be accurately accounted for in numerical ***,we consider the problem of computing the effective permeability of rock samples based on high-resolution 3DCT scans containingmillions of *** use the Stokes-Brinkman equations in the entire domain,covering regions of free flow governed by the Stokes equations,porous Darcy flow,and transitions between *** presence of different length scales and large(ten orders of magnitude)contrasts in permeability leads to highly ill-conditioned linear systems of equations,which are difficult to *** obtain a problem that is computationally tractable,we first analyze the relative importance of the Stokes and Darcy terms for a set of idealized 2D *** find that,in terms of effective permeability,the Stokes-Brinkman equations are only applicable for a special parameter set where the effective free-flow permeability is less than four orders of magnitude different from the matrix *** other cases can be accurately modeled with either the Stokes or the Darcy end-member flows,depending on if there do or do not exist percolating free-flow *** insights obtained are used to perform a direct computation of the effective permeability of a rock sample model with more than 8 million cells.

Studies on thermal decomposition of phenol binder using TG/DTG/DTA and FTIR-DRIFTS techniques in temperature range 20-500 °C

This paper presents results of thermoanalytical and structural research on phenolic binder used in foundry for the preparation of moulding sand. The binder has been prepared based on resole type phenolic resin with the addition of ester hardener. The aim of the study was to determine the structural changes taking place in the phenolic binder under the influence of temperature. Results show that in the investigated range of temperatures, phenolic binder exhibits three exothermic thermal effects accompanying the decomposition process. The test results using the Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy(DRIFTS) technique show that the addition of a hardener stabilizes the binder structure within methylene bridges. The reduction in the reaction rate observed in the DTA curve at about 330 °C can be associated with the formation of gaseous products by decomposition of the binder or, as suggested by the literature data, the formation of triple bonds and CN-HCN groups.

Effective intrahepatic CD8＋ T-cell immune responses are induced by low but not high numbers of antigen-expressing hepatocytes

Liver infections with hepatotropic viruses, such as hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus are accompanied by viral persistence and immune failure. CD8＋ T cells are crucial mediators of the intrahepatic antiviral immune response. Chronic infections of the liver and other organs correlate with T-cell exhaustion. It was previously suggested that high antigen load could result in T-cell exhaustion. We aimed at elucidating the impact of different intrahepatic antigen loads on the quality of CD8＋ T-cell-mediated immunity by employing an infection-free transgenic mouse model expressing ovalbumin （Ova） as the target antigen. Adoptive transfer of OT-I cells induced a transient intrahepatic immune response toward both high and low Ova levels. However, antigen clearance was achieved only in mice expressing low antigen levels. In contrast, T cells exposed to high antigen levels underwent exhaustion and became depleted, causing antigen persistence. Moreover, when functional T cells were exposed to high intrahepatic antigen levels, a complete transition toward exhaustion was observed. Thus, this study shows that the antigen expression level in the liver correlates inversely with T-cell immunity in vivo and governs the efficiency of immune responses upon antigen presentation.

Middle ear reconstruction estimated by recurrence plot technique

Middle ear surgery techniques have enabled to improve hearing destroyed by a disease. Despite huge improvement in instrumentation and techniques the results of hearing improvement surgery are still difficult to predict. This paper presents the results of vibrations measurements in a human middle ear obtained at the Medical University of Lublin. Vibrations of the stapes in the case of the intact ossicular chain, after cement incus rebuilding and incus interpositions are compared each other. In this aim a new approach of ossicles vibrations observation is introduced in order to complete information obtained from classical approach which bases on the transfer function. Measurements of ossicular chain vibrations are performed on fresh human temporal bone specimen using the laser doppler vibrometer. Next, after classical research, the extended analysis with the recurrence plots technique is performed.

Pancreatic cancer risk variant ABO rs505922 in patients with cholangiocarcinoma

The aim of this study was to investigate an association between the development of cholangiocarcinoma(CCA)and the ABO variant rs505922(known to increase pan-creatic cancer risk)in a large cohort of European individuals with *** total,180 individuals with CCA and 350 CCA-free controls were *** ABO variant rs505922 was genotyped using a polymerase chain reaction-based *** between this single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)and CCA was tested in contingency *** allele distributions nor association tests and regression analysis provided evidence for an increased risk of CCA among carriers of the ABO variant(all P > 0.05).Nevertheless,we documented a deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the entire CCA cohort(P = 0.028)and for patients with intrahe-patic(P = 0.037)but not extrahepatic tumor localization(P > 0.05).The association tests did not provide evidence for a prominent role of the investigated SNP in the genetic risk of ***,Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium in the entire cohort and the intrahepatic CCA subgroup warrants future studies investigating a potential CCA risk modulation by individual blood groups.

Cytokines are essential mediators of immune response and inflammatory reactions. Patients with chronic renal failure （CRF） commonly present with abnormalities of immune function related with impaired kidney function and the accumulation of uremic toxins in addition to bioincompatibility of dialyzer membranes. During a hemodialysis （HD） session, cytokines are released mainly by monocytes activated by endotoxin-type compounds in dialyzer fluid, complement factors and direct contact with dialyzer membrane. The study included 15 CRF patients, aged 36.4 ± 2.9 years, on regular HD maintenance therapy for mean 68 ± 10 months and 15 healthy controls. It was designed to assess serum levels of a panel of inflammatory cytokines： IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α in CRF patients on regular maintenance HD before, 20, 60 and 240 minutes of a single HD session in parallel with C-reactive protein （CRP） as an additional parameter. CRP concentration was increased in HD patients when compared with healthy controls. The concentrations of IL-1, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α were increased, whereas the serum level of IL-2 was not altered during a single HD session.
