Termite colonies are usully headed by primary reproductives,which estab-listh nests during the swar ming ***,secondary reproductives may develop in some specics and become supplementary or replacement breeders,extending colony *** we investigate the developmental origin,fecundity and genetic characterizaion of ergatoid reproductives in the Neotropical termite Nasuitermes aquilinus(Holmgren),using morphometrical and histological techniques,five micosiallitle loci and the COI mitochondrial *** measurements performed on 208 apterous individuals of Nuauidius revealed 10 groups,including ergatoid females,which developed from major workers through two successive *** were characterized by the presence of imaginal features such as eyes andl wing *** difentiation of these features was correlated to physogastric development in these ergatoids,Histology revealed ooeytes in all matu-ration sages in worker-derived reproductives of N aquidinus,presence of nonflagellate spermatozoa inside the spermatheea,and royal fa ***,ergatoid reproduwetives were reproductively *** to the genotypes of 221 individuals from 11 nests,and mitochondrial haplotypes of 43 ergatoids,73%of the colomies were simple families,whereas 27%were extendbed *** the oecurenee of related reproductives,low inbreeding rates were detected within and among *** values could be explained given that sib mating itself cannot result in a higher inbreeding rate but depend on several factors discussed in *** is the first study to investigate the genetic structure of termite colonies influenced by the development of ergatoids and further investigations are encouraged 10 understand the inflwence of these reproductives on colony lifespan.

Extreme liver resections with preservation of segment 4 only

To evaluate safety and outcomes of a new technique for extreme hepatic resections with preservation of segment 4 only. METHODSThe new method of extreme liver resection consists of a two-stage hepatectomy. The first stage involves a right hepatectomy with middle hepatic vein preservation and induction of left lobe congestion; the second stage involves a left lobectomy. Thus, the remnant liver is represented by the segment 4 only (with or without segment 1, ± S1). Five patients underwent the new two-stage hepatectomy (congestion group). data from volumetric assessment made before the second stage was compared with that of 10 matched patients (comparison group) that underwent a single-stage right hepatectomy with middle hepatic vein preservation. RESULTSThe two stages of the procedure were successfully carried out on all 5 patients. For the congestion group, the overall volume of the left hemiliver had increased 103% (mean increase from 438 mL to 890 mL) at 4 wk after the first stage of the procedure. Hypertrophy of the future liver remnant (i.e., segment 4 ± S1) was higher than that of segments 2 and 3 (144% vs 54%, respectively, P 0.05) were proportional. The mean preoperative volume of segments 2 and 3 was 256 ± 64 cc and increased to 572 ± 257 cc after right hepatectomy. Mean preoperative volume of segment 4 increased from 211 ± 75 cc to 439 ± 180 cc after surgery. CONCLUSIONThe proposed method for extreme hepatectomy with preservation of segment 4 only represents a technique that could allow complete resection of multiple bilateral liver metastases.

Resource management at the network edge for federated learning

Heterogeneity in the Second Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS2) of rDNA in the Genetically Distinct Metopolophium dirhodum Isofemale Lineages (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

The aim of this study was to investigate the level of evolutionary divergence among five isofemale lineages of Metopolophium dirhodum Walker (Hemiptera: Aphididae) using sequences of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA). These isofemalelineages were derived from parthenogenetic females, previously genetically characterized by having strong association of RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) molecular markers and host plant preference. Out of 25 sequences, only 17 containing ITS2 (the second spacer) were used for analysis due to their quality. Within 250 nucleotide sites originated by multiple alignments, 10.4% were variable, with the predominance of indels over substitutions. The average of nucleotide diversity (π) within isofemale lineages was similar to the diversity found among all isofemale lineages. The topology inferred by the Neighbor-Joining method showed that no evolutionary divergence inferred by ITS2 sequences among isofemale lineages typified by RAPD could be associated with host preference. The ITS2 sequence differences found within lineages and their causes are discussed.

The order Gobiiformes is made up of more than 2200 species,representing one of the most diverse groups among teleost *** biological causes for the tachytelic karyotype evolution of the gobies have not yet been fully *** we expanded cytogenetic data for the Eleotridae family,analyzing the neotropical species Dormitator maculatus,Eleotris pisonis,Erotelis smaragdus,and Guavina *** addition,a meta-analytical approach was followed for elucidating the karyotype diversification versus biological aspects(habitat and egg type)of the *** species *** and *** present 2n=46 acrocentric chromosomes(NF=46),*** 2n=46(36sm+4st+6a;NF=86),and ***,the most divergent karyotype,with 2n=52 acrocentric chromosomes(NF=52).Besides numeric and structural diversification in the karyotypes,the mapping of rDNAs and microsatellites also showed noticeable numerical and positional variation,supporting the high chromosomal evolutionary dynamism of these *** Gobiiformes,karyotype patterns which are more divergent from the basal karyotype(2n=46a)are associated with characteristics less effective to dispersion,such as the benthic *** adaptive characteristics,connected with the organization of the repetitive DNA content in the chromosomes,likely play a synergistic role in the remarkable karyotype diversification of this group.

Fractionation of rare earth elements（REE） and other trace metal concentrations（Th, U, Cd,Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn） between mangrove sediments and claw muscles and shells of male crabs（Ucides cordatus） from a subtropical estuary highly impacted by fertilizer industry activities was investigated. This is the first record of REE distribution in these organisms,and the results showed higher accumulations of these metals, U and Th in shells, probably related to the replacement of Ca during molting. Contents of Cd, Cr and Ni were similar in both tissues, but Cu, Zn and Pb were mostly accumulated in the claw muscle with concentrations above those considered safe for human consumption according to the Brazilian legislation. REE fractionation was different in the analyzed tissues being softer in the shells. The results provided evidences that the water absorbed during molting controls the chemistry of REE in shells. In contrast, the chemistry of REE in the claw muscle, in which was observed preferential absorption of light REE, is controlled by diet. REE fractionation obtained for the claw muscles was closely correlated to the observed in the contaminated substrate and in materials related to the production of phosphate fertilizers（contamination source）, which supports their transference to this Ucides cordatus tissue without fractionation by the ingestion of sediments. Our results showed the potential use of crab tissues for monitoring REE and trace element sources in mangrove areas, with claw muscle exhibiting the contaminant source fingerprint.

Bone mineral density in cone beam computed tomography:Only a few shades of gray

Cone beam computed tomography(CBCT) has often been used to determine the quality of craniofacial bone structures through the determination of mineral density, which is based on gray scales of the images obtained. However, there is no consensus regarding the accuracy of the determination of the gray scales in these exams. This study aims to provide a literature review concerning the reliability of CBCT to determine bone mineral density. The gray values obtained with CBCT show a linear relationship with the attenuation coefficients of the materials, Hounsfield Units values obtained with medical computed tomography, and density values from dual energy X-ray absorciometry. However, errors are expected when CBCT images are used to define the quality of the scanned structures be-cause these images show inconsistencies and arbitrari-ness in the gray values, particularly when related to abrupt change in the density of the object, X-ray beam hardening effect, scattered radiation, projection data discontinuity-related effect, differences between CBCTdevices, changes in the volume of the field of view(FOV), and changes in the relationships of size and position between the FOV and the object evaluated. A few methods of mathematical correction of the gray scales in CBCT have been proposed; however, they do not generate consistent values that are independent of the devices and their configurations or of the scanned objects. Thus, CBCT should not be considered the ex-amination of choice for the determination of bone and soft tissue mineral density at the current stage, par-ticularly when values obtained are to be compared to predetermined standard values. Comparisons between symmetrically positioned structures inside the FOV and in relation to the exomass of the object, as it occurs with the right and left sides of the skull, seem to be viable because the effects on the gray scale in the re-gions of interest are the same.

This research aimed to analyze the possibility to estimate and automatically map large areas of soybean cultivation through the use of MODIS(Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)*** major techniques were used:GEOgraphic-Object-Based Image Analysis(GEOBIA)and data Mining(DM).In order to obtain the images,the segmentation algorithm implemented by Definiens Developer was used.A decision tree(DT)was created from a training set previously ***-series of images from the MODIS sensor aboard the Terra satellite were acquired in order to represent the wide variation of the vegetation pattern along the soybean crop *** time-series data were used only for the CEI ***,to compare the results obtained from GEOBIA,the slicing technique was used at the CEI *** the training,the DT was applied to the vegetation indices generating the thematic map of the spatial distribution of *** accordance with the error matrix and kappa parameter analysis,tests for statistical significance were *** indicate that the classification achieved by Kappa coefficients is *** short,the obtained results proved that combining vegetation indices and time-series data using GEOBIA return promising results for mapping soybean plantation on a regional scale.
