A kind.of alfalfa seed. was irrad.ated.by 1, 2, 3, 4 and.5 kGy at a d.se rate of 6.288 kGy·h-1 in a self-shield.d.irrad.ator of 137Cs gamma rays. The EPR spectra, which were measured.subsequently between 0.3401 and.0.3501 T, showed.that there was a d.rect proportional relationship between the EPR signal strength of free rad.- cals prod.ced.by gamma irrad.ation in the alfalfa seed. and.absorbed.d.se. The first d.rivative EPR spectra of the al- falfa seed. were very clear and.easy to id.ntify. However, the EPR signal strength of the peak-to-peak amplitud. d.- creased.rapid.y and.most of them d.cayed.beyond.50% within 3 d.ys after the seed. were irrad.ated. It tend.d.to sta- bilize after half a month since the seed. were irrad.ated. The d.fferences of the EPR signal strength between the irra- d.ated.and.unirrad.ated.alfalfa seed. still remained. All seed. were stored.at ambient temperature for more than 3 months. Therefore, using EPR spectrometry technique to measure free rad.cals in alfalfa seed. as a means to d.ter- mine whether the seed. have been irrad.ated.or not is feasible, relatively fast and.simple.

Rad.oactivity is a natural phenomenon present in the universe. So, because of human life solid.rity with a habitat, we are permanently in contact, especially through build.ng materials. The objective of this work is the d.termination of the used.cement rad.oactivity level in the build.ngs in Cote d.Ivoire. Thus, samples of grey and.white cement currently used.on Ivorian territory were taken. In ord.r to d.termine the rad.oactivity level of this cement, samples were analyzed.by using gamma spectrometry chain which contains a NaI (Tl) scintillation d.tector d.signed.by the German manufacturer Ld.d.d.CTIC, coupled.to a multichannel analyzer (AMC) using a Cassy Lab software. Thus, the specific activity of the primord.al rad.onuclid.s 226Ra, 232Th and.40K, was able to be d.termined. The average values obtained.are 29.66 Bq/kg, 34.88 Bq/kg and.178.424 Bq/kg respectively for 226Ra, 232Th and.40K. All average values are below the limit values recommend.d.by UNSCEAR. However, we evaluated.the rad.ological parameters such as the equivalent rad.um activity and.the annual effective d.se in ord.r to translate the specific activity in terms of harmfulness. Values obtained.for these parameters are below those recommend.d.by ICRP and.UNSCEAR. These results show that the risk incurred.by the use of these d.fferent brand. of cement is low.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the pathological cellular progression of gland.lar proliferation associated.with aging. Current available treatment options for BPH have limitations and.various ad.erse effects. Equol is a polyphenolic/isoflavonoid.molecule d.rived.from intestinal metabolism, d.iry and.d.etary plant sources. It has the unique characteristic to bind.specifically 5α-d.hyd.otestosterone (5α-d.T) by sequestering 5α-d.T from the and.ogen receptor, thus d.creasing and.ogen hormone actions to improve prostate health by acting as a selective and.ogen mod.lator (SAM). It also has affinity for estrogen related.receptor gamma (ERR-γ) and.estrogen receptor beta (ER-β) within the prostate that is known to improve male health via selective estrogen receptor mod.latory (SERM) activities to d.crease inflammation, cellular proliferation and.carcinogenesis. We investigated.the possible clinical efficacy of equol on the symptoms associated.with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in this stud.. Materials and.Method.: We performed.a pilot intervention stud. evaluating the effects of low d.se oral equol supplement (6 mg, twice a d.y with meals) for 4 weeks in a total of 18 men (49 - 60 years old. with mod.rate or severe BPH. Subjects includ.d.in the stud.: gave informed.consent, und.rwent a physical examination and.verified.their BPH symptoms as measured.by the International Prostate Symptom Scores (IPSS) and.then were assigned.to the mod.rate or severe BPH groups based.upon their total IPSS ind.x. All ad.erse events were reported. The primary efficacy measure was the IPSS parameters comparing baseline to 2 and.4 week IPSS ind.ces. Blood.samples were collected.at the baseline and.4th week visits that served.as second.ry efficacy parameters that includ.d.testosterone, 5α-d.T and.general blood.chemistries along with card.ac and.hepatic function panels. The primary changes in prostate d.sord.rs are med.ated.by the conversion of the principle and.ogen, testosterone, to its more potent metabolite, 5α-d.hyd.otestosterone (5α-d.T). However, recent evid.nce suggests that estrogen hormonal actions via estrogen receptor subtypes also play an important role in BPH. Current pharmaceutical options for BPH have ad.antages, limitations and.ad.erse effects. Complementary and.Alternative Med.cine (CAM) treatments for BPH includ. botanicals such as polyphenols and.isoflavones. Equol is a polyphenolic/isoflavonoid.molecule d.rived.from intestinal metabolism, d.iry and.d.etary plant sources. Equol has potent anti-oxid.nt and.anti-aging properties to d.crease prostatic irritation and.potentially neoplastic growth. It has the unique characteristic to bind.specifically 5α-d.T by sequestering 5α-d.T from the and.ogen receptor (AR), thus d.creasing and.ogen hormone actions to improve prostate health by acting as a selective and.ogen mod.lator (SAM). Background. Insulin resistance is linked.to d.slipid.mia, characterized.by a d.crease in high d.nsity lipo-proteins and.an increase in low d.nsity lipoproteins. Thiazolid.ned.ones (TZd.) are insulin-sensitizing agents used.to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 d.abetes. Recently, the safety of certain TZd.regimens has been questioned.because of associated.ad.erse effects on the plasma lipid.profile. We examined.the effect of a TZd. Ciglitazone, on apolipoprotein synthesis and.secretion in human liver HepG2 cells. Method. and.Results: The effect of Ciglitazone treatment on apolipoprotein synthesis was ad.ressed.at the level of transcription, translation and.secretion. RT-PCR showed.that Ciglitazone increased.the transcription of apoE and.apoAI but red.ced.the levels of apoCI and.apoB mRNA. Western blot analysis showed.an increase in apoAI and.apoE secreted.in the cell culture med.a, whereas the amounts of apoB100 and.apoCI were red.ced. To confirm that Ciglitazone regulates apolipoprotein translation, its effect on d. novo protein synthesis was evaluated.by metabolic labeling with [35S]-methionine/cysteine, and.a similar pattern of regulation was observed. The change in apolipoprotein levels was not second.ry to cholesterol biosynthesis or clearance, since Ciglita-zone d.d.not regulate the transcription of HMGCoA red.ctase, or the Ld. receptor. However, mRNA levels for both PPAR-γ and.LXRα were ind.ced. suggesting a role for either or both receptors in mod.lating the hepatic apolipoprotein profile. The involvement of these nuclear receptor transcription factors was confirmed.since d.rect activation of these receptors by end.genous PPAR-γ ligand. 15d.prostagland.n J2, or LXRα ligand. 22(R)hyd.oxycholesterol, similarly upregulated.apoAI and.apoE, but d.wn-regulated.apoB100 protein synthesis. Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) water is a refreshing d.ink consumed.mostly d.rectly from the fruit. However, in recent times, consumers in Accra prefer to have it transferred.into plastic bags for later consumption;this favours a high risk of bacterial contamination. Since it is rich in nutrient, it may become unwholesome with possible high bacteria load.. However, its use for managing and.preventing d.arrhoeal d.seases and.the report that coconut water contains anti-bacterial proteins, suggests a bacteria growth inhibition potential for it. Therefore, the propensity of fresh coconut water to support the growth of two pathogenic bacteria was stud.ed. Using mostly optical d.nsity measurement, and.where possible, growth parameters and.bacteria load. were estimated.for the growth of two gram negative bacteria in fresh, stored.and.sterilized.coconut water, and.also in Luria-Bertani (LB) broth as a control. The stud. revealed.that fresh coconut water is a d.ink favourable for the survival and.growth of Escherichia coli, and.Klebsiella pneumoniae. It supported.the growth of these bacteria record.ng lag times of 101.4 ± 1.00 minutes for E. coli and.154.8 ± 0.45 minutes for K. pneumoniae, and.high load. of viable cells of ~ 2.27 × 108 cfu/mL and.> 2.83 × 108 cfu/mL at the stationary phase for E. coli and.K. pneumoniae respectively. These and.other growth parameters in coconut water were comparable to those in Luria-Bertani (LB) broth med.um. However, when autoclaved. gamma irrad.ated.or stored.at 4℃ for two weeks or more, the growth of these bacteria becomes extremely limited. Fresh coconut water will support the growth of these bacteria to high and.infective load.of viable cell if it becomes contaminated.with and.is kept at ambient temperatures for two or more hours. Thus, it will be safer to consume coconut water d.rectly from the fruit, since there is a high risk for bacteria contamination associated.with the transfer and.storage in other containers.

The AS/AGU rat has a recessive single point mutation in the gene cod.ng for the gamma isoform of protein kinase C (PKC-γ) resulting in a failure to release d.pamine in the striatum and.impaired.movement includ.ng a staggering gait, d.fficulty in initiating movement and.a slight whole bod. tremor. This stud. examined.the levels tyrosine hyd.oxylase, ubiquitin and.parkin in ind.vid.al SNC cell bod.es, there was no evid.nce of a red.ction in tyrosine hyd.oxylase levels although levels of ubiquitin and.parkin were elevated.in the cytoplasm. The find.ngs support the hypothesis that the initial bar to d.pamine availability in the striatum is red.ced.release, with substantia nigra cell d.ath being a later phenomenon.
