In recent years the development of chitosan (CH) based materials as useful adsorbent polymeric matrices is an expanding field in the area of adsorption science. Even though CH has been successfully used for dye removal from aqueous solutions due to its low cost, no considerations have been made about, for example, the effect of changing the pH of chitosan hydrogelor about the dehydrating effect of Ethanol (EtOH) treatment of chitosan film on the dyes removal from water. Consequently in our laboratory we carried out a study focusing the attention, mainly, on the potential use of CH films under different conditions, such as reducing the intrinsic pH, increasing the hydrophobic character by means of ethanol treatment and neutralization of CH films to improve their absorption power. Textile anionic dyes named Direct Red 83:1, Direct Yellow 86 and Direct Blue 78 have been studied with the aim of reducing the contact time of CH film in waste water improving the bleaching efficiency. Neutralized acid CH film and longtime dehydrated one result to be the better films in dye removal from water. Also the reduction of the CH solution acidity during the film preparation determines the decreasing of the contact time improving the results. The effect of initial dye concentration has been examined and the amount of dye adsorption in function of time t, qt (mg/cm2), for each analyzed film has been evaluated comparing the long term effect with the decoloration rate. A linear form of pseudo-first-order Lagergren model has been used and described. The best condition for removing all examined dyes from various dye solutions appears to be the dehydration of a novel projected CH film obtained by means of the film immersion in EtOH for 4 days. Also CH films prepared by well-known literature procedure and neutralized with NaOH treatment appear having an excellent behavior, however the film treatment requires a large quantity of water and time.

Urban evolution becomes a space-transforming agent capable of changing Normalised Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)and Land Surface Temperature(LST)emissivity reflectance on the land ***,this study identifies NDVI and LST variations locally,but it can also be applied in other cities on a global *** general,it aims to analyse NDVI and LST on surface areas of avenues and urban streets of Sector 1,located in downtown Passo Fundo,in the southern region of Brazil,from 2013 to ***,treated Landsat 8 satellite images were used to obtain NDVI and LST variations in this ***,data of 80 points in the avenues and streets of Sector 1 were collected over a distance of 100 meters spaced from each *** data were statistically analysed concerning the dispersion of NDVI and LST from 2013 to *** results revealed a strong interaction between NDVI and LST,demonstrating the need to conserve urban vegetation to improve temperature,which positively favours urban ambience indexes.

Immunohistochemical Expression of p53 and p63 in Adenomas and Carcinomas of Canine Mammary Glands

Mammary tumors are very common in female dogs and its prognosis varies significantly according to the tumor invasion degree. Myoepithelial layer destruction is considered a differential diagnosis parameter of in situ from invasive lesions in human breast cancer. Aiming to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of p63, a protein specifically expressed by myoepithelial cells of mammary gland, and its correlation with p53 expression, 10 adenomas and 20 carcinomas with and without metastasis of canine mammary gland were studied. There was no significant difference between adenomas and carcinomas for both proteins staining, however, the percentage and continuity of staining was lower in metastatic carcinomas. There was no correlation between p53 and p63 expression, but the higher values of p53 staining were found in carcinomas, according to previous studies. Results showed that p63 is specifically expressed also in myoepithelial cells of canine mammary gland. However, in order to ensure its use as a prognostic marker in canine mammary tumors, further studies involving a higher number of samples should be conducted.

Health Risks due to Consumption of <i>Malus domestica</i>Golden Delicious Containing Heavy Metals

The intake of heavy metals through food consumption is a food safety problem that severely impacts the health of consumers, so information about food intake and heavy metal concentrations in food products is required to estimate the potential risk to the health of the population. The main purpose of this study was to estimate the potential risks to human health from exposure to Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn through the intake of Malus domestica Golden Delicious consumed in the Mexican southeast, considering the age group and gender. The concentration of each of the metals was quantified by spectrometry of atomic absorption (AAE) and the daily intake of metals (DIM) and health risk indices through the consumption of apple: health risk index (HRI), total health risk index (THRI), target hazard coefficient (THQ) and the probability of carcinogenic risk (CR) were estimated. The concentrations of the metals analyzed in the apple samples showed the following decreasing order: Zn ≥ Ni ≥ Cu ≥ Pb ≥ Cd. The DIM values showed the following decreasing order: child > young adult > adoescent > elders. The health risk assessments (HRI, THRI, THQ and CR) obtained from the samples of Golden Delicious apples are located within the acceptable and/or tolerable limits, however, the increase in the intake of heavy metals through consumption of apples from establishments in the study area or the consumption of various foods contaminated with heavy metals may increase the health risk potential of consumers. For this reason, it is recommended to carry out studies on the concentration of heavy metals in food products, mainly those of greater popular consumption, to guarantee food security of the population.

Background:Even though the use of nerve monitoring during parotid gland surgery is not the gold standard to prevent damage to the nerve,it surely offers some advantages over the traditional *** from thyroid surgery,where a series of steps in intraoperative nerve monitoring have been described to confirm not only the integrity but—most importantly—the function of the recurrent laryngeal nerve,in parotid gland surgery,a formal guideline to follow while dissecting the facial nerve has yet to be ***:A five‐year retrospective study was done reviewing the intraoperative records of patients who underwent parotid gland surgery under neural *** operative findings regarding the neuromonitoring process,particularly in regard to the amplitude of two main branches,were revised.A literature search was done to search for guidelines to follow when a facial nerve loss of signal is ***:Fifty‐five patients were operated on using the Nim 3 Nerve Monitoring System(Medtronic);31 were female patients,and 47 patients had benign *** changes were observed in the amplitude records after a comparison was made between the first and the last *** were only three articles discussing the term loss of signal during parotid gland ***:Today,no sufficient attention has been given to the facial nerve monitoring process during *** study proposes a formal guideline to follow during this procedure as well as an instruction to consider when a loss of signal is observed to develop a uniform technique of facial nerve stimulation.

A Novel Computerized Cognitive Test for the Detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Its Association with Neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s Disease Prone Brain Regions

During the prodromal stage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), neurodegenerative changes can be identified by measuring volumetric loss in AD-prone brain regions on MRI. Cognitive assessments that are sensitive enough to measure the early brain-behavior manifestations of AD and that correlate with biomarkers of neurodegeneration are needed to identify and monitor individuals at risk for dementia. Weak sensitivity to early cognitive change has been a major limitation of traditional cognitive assessments. In this study, we focused on expanding our previous work by determining whether a digitized cognitive stress test, the Loewenstein-Acevedo Scales for Semantic Interference and Learning, Brief Computerized Version (LASSI-BC) could differentiate between Cognitively Unimpaired (CU) and amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) groups. A second focus was to correlate LASSI-BC performance to volumetric reductions in AD-prone brain regions. Data was gathered from 111 older adults who were comprehensively evaluated and administered the LASSI-BC. Eighty-seven of these participants (51 CU;36 aMCI) underwent MR imaging. The volumes of 12 AD-prone brain regions were related to LASSI-BC and other memory tests correcting for False Discovery Rate (FDR). Results indicated that, even after adjusting for initial learning ability, the failure to recover from proactive semantic interference (frPSI) on the LASSI-BC differentiated between CU and aMCI groups. An optimal combination of frPSI and initial learning strength on the LASSI-BC yielded an area under the ROC curve of 0.876 (76.1% sensitivity, 82.7% specificity). Further, frPSI on the LASSI-BC was associated with volumetric reductions in the hippocampus, amygdala, inferior temporal lobes, precuneus, and posterior cingulate.

Neoadjuvant Therapy for Locally Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma with Sorafenib in a Reference Center in Mexico

Background: neo - adjuvant therapy is usually indicated in locally advanced tumors, the aim is to decrease the tumoral burden and enhance overall survival. Renal cell carcinoma is a chemo and radio resistant neoplasm and this type of approach is not as effective as in other solid tumors. On the other hand immunotherapy is indicated in metastatic disease, demonstrating a better overall survival. Sorafenib is an antiangiogenic drug approved for locally advanced or metastatic RCC. We postulated that it can be used in a neoadjuvant way to decrease the vascularization of selected tumors. Report of the case: 57 years old male referred to our service with a right renal mass and metastatic disease to lumbar spine and suprarenal gland. He was treated with three months of sorafenib previous to the surgery. Results: The patient went into surgery three months after initiating the antiangiogenic drug, during the surgery we found less neo-formance vessels;the dissection was subjectively easier, due to peri-renal edema. The pathologic analysis of the specimen was renal cell carcinoma. Interestingly, 40% of central ischemic (coagulative) necrosis was found. Conclusion: There are no neoadjuvant drugs accepted for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma;using an antiagiogenic drug to decrease the vascular burden characteristic of this type of tumors could be a viable option in selected cases. We used a lower dose of the drug with an acceptable safety profile.

Ursolic Acid Derivatives Induced Apoptosis and Reduces the NF-κB in Human Lung Adenocarcinoma Cells

Lung cancer is the major cause of death in the neoplastic diseases. In spite of the advances in the chemotherapy, the lung cancer treatments are still complex and costly, being necessary the seeking of new drugs. In this context, the ursolic acid (UA) becomes the target of studies that investigate its antitumor potential and, thus, structural modifications can enhance its biological activities. Eight UA semisynthetic derivative compounds (UAD1-8) were synthesized and evaluated their cytotoxic activity against human alveolar adenocarcinoma cells (A549). UAD1, UAD3, UAD5, UAD6 and UAD8 were able to reduce the viability of the A549 cells. Only UAD1 and UAD6 reduced the viability at 24 h, and only UAD3 didn’t reduce the NF-κB expression. The compound UAD1 showed the greater apoptosis induction. Moreover, the compound UAD1 showed better results than UA in all assays. The present study shows, for the first time, the action of these compounds in the apoptotic effect, in the expression of NF-κB and in the A549 cell line. The ursolic acid derivatives showed substantial results in the apoptosis, cytotoxicity and NF-κB inhibition of A549 cells, and further studies are necessary for the development of possible new therapeutic drugs.

Linoleic (LA) and α-linolenic acids (ALA) are considered essential fatty acids (EFA) because they are not produced by the human body. This way, EFAs sources must come from the diet. The primary dietary source of n-3 fatty acids is ALA, found in seeds and seed oils. Other important sources are fish oils such as tuna, salmon and herring. Currently, numerous studies suggest possible benefits of essential fatty acids in human health, such as in cardiovascular, cognitive and eye health, and also during pregnancy and childhood. This paper also discusses the impact of fatty acids in human metabolism, and the available evidence regarding its risks. It addresses the relevant debate regarding a general ban of trans fatty acids (TFA) from the world food market, because of the cardiovascular risks associated with its consumption.

Porcine Respiratory Pathogens in Swine Farms Environment in Mexico

Respiratory pathogens are the main health problem in the swine industry worldwide. These pathogens are transmitted by direct contact between animals or by aerosols and however are not well known yet, if the environment works as its reservoir, inoculum and/or dispersion medium. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of respiratory pathogens in environmental samples from swine farms in Aguascalientes, Mexico, through of PCR and RT-PCR techniques. The bacteria Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Pasteurella multocida were found viable in samples from water, food, soil and air. Streptococcus suis was found in a viable state in water samples. Haemophilus parasuis, Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus and Swine Influenza virus (H1N1 and H3N2) were detected in drinking water samples. Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) were not detected in environmental samples. These results suggest that the environment of the farms acts as a reservoir, inoculum and/or vehicle of dispersion for these pathogens except for M. hyopneumoniae and PCV2.
