Aims The diversity and structure of forest edges are a central issue in ***,most studies have focused on anthropogenic for-est edges,being natural ones least *** studied the com-munities of shrubs and trees in natural edges of gallery forests with the main goal of learning what are the main factors that shape the structure and diversity of these natural sharp *** We evaluated 10 gallery forest sites,allocating in each of them three 15×20 m *** plots were laid out in relatively rectilinear stretches of forest edges,respecting a minimal distance of 10 m between each *** they are permanent plots and meant to study eventual fluctuations in the forest-grasslands limits,we allocated the plots with their longest side parallel to the forest edge and covering perpendicularly 5 m of the grassland and 10 m of *** the plots we identified,mapped and measured all shrub and tree individuals with diameter at breast height(DBH)≥1 *** Findings Although many differences exist among the communities in terms of density and basal area,all of them were highly dense and had relatively low basal *** addition,both the number of individu-als and the basal area increased rapidly towards the forest *** results also revealed that the edge communities are composed mainly by small individuals that demand a great amount of *** the vertical stratification and the proportion of the functional groups are similar among the sites yet change quickly in the first 10 m of the forest ***,the floristic similarities were low among the communities mainly due to the species turnover within each ***,although the overall structure is constant in the studied edges,the low floristic similarity among them possibly indicates that the species within the same functional groups are sub-stituting each other across the *** older and seemingly stable,our results showed the gallery forest edges are quite simila

Treatment of peripheral nerve injuries remains a challenge to modern medicine due to the com-plexity of the neurobiological nerve regenerating process. There is a greater challenge when the transected nerve ends are not amenable to primary end-to-end tensionless neurorraphy. When facing a segmental nerve defect, great effort has been made to develop an alternative to the au-tologous nerve graft in order to circumvent morbidity at donor site, such as neuroma formation, scarring and permanent loss of function. Tubolization techniques have been developed to bridge nerve gaps and have been extensively studied in numerous experimental and clinical trials. The use of a conduit intends to act as a vehicle for moderation and modulation of the cellular and molecular ambience for nerve regeneration. Among several conduits, vein tubes were validated for clinical application with improving outcomes over the years. This article aims to address the investigation and treatment of segmental nerve injury and draw the current panorama on the use of vein tubes as an autogenous nerve conduit.

The Assessment Screening of Trauma Reactions, Psychopathology and Psychosocial Function in a High-Risk Sample of 4-8-Year-Old Children—A Pilot Study

Background: Multiple traumatization in childhood is a broad term that includes interpersonal trauma experiences such as physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and neglect. Children with a child protection case referred to counseling are likely to be in high risk of multiple exposure to interpersonal trauma. We aim to demonstrate that systematic assessment with validated measures is feasible in this age group. Method: The Center for Interventions of Children and Adolescents (CIBU), Denmark, provided a new assessment screening procedure where 16 caregivers with children in the age of 4 - 8-years-old participated prior to initiating counseling in a public family treatment facility. We utilized the Diagnostic Infant Preschool Assessment (DIPA) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). The SDQ was compared with Danish norms. Results: The data suggest that psychopathology was present among all 16 children in this high-risk sample. Distribution of disorders showed 93.8% prevalence of comorbidity. All 16 children had difficulties regarding psychosocial functioning when compared to a Danish norm population. Most profound was emotional symptoms and symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention. Conclusion: This study revealed a higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders and higher rates of psychosocial difficulties in referred children than in children from the general population. Overall, children in this study had complex symptom profiles. Thus, a systematic approach may be helpful in public treatment facilities, and we suggest the implementation of valid evidence-based instruments.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV)for forest monitoring has grown significantly in recent years,providing information with high spatial resolution and temporal *** with multispectral sensors allow the use of indexes such as the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),which determines the vigor,physiological stress and photo synthetic activity of *** study aimed to analyze the spectral responses and variations of NDVI in tree crowns,as well as their correlation with climatic factors over the course of one *** study area encompassed a 1.6-ha site in Durango,Mexico,where Pinus cembroides,Pinus engelmannii,and Quercus grisea *** images were acquired with UAV and information on meteorological variables was obtained from NASA/POWER *** ANOVA explored possible differences in NDVI among the three *** correlation was performed to identify the linear relationship between NDVI and meteorological *** differences in NDVI values were found at the genus level(Pinus and Quercus),possibly related to the physiological features of the species and their *** grisea had the lowest NDVI values throughout the year which may be attributed to its sensitivity to relative humidity and *** the use of UAV with a multispectral sensor for NDVI monitoring allowed genera differentiation,in more complex forest analyses hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors should be integrated,as well other vegetation indexes be considered.

The present study assesses the possibility of implementing an auxiliary-service smart monitoring solution at power substations. The solution is intended to improve substation indices in terms of accident rates and undesired events that result from initial incidents associated to failure of the Direct Current systems in charge of supporting the operation of protection elements. In recent years in Colombia, substation fires have been reported, and auxiliary services have been identified as a potential initial cause of these unfortunate events. In fact, in Bogotá (Capital city of Colombia), in the last decade, incidents occurred at four high-power substations, and the potential failure cause was associated to the operation of auxiliary services, according to the criteria of experts in the electrical sector. The present study illustrates how a monitoring system substantially improves the lifecycle of battery banks in a three-year period (8% lifecycle improvement together with an increase in reliability of the system by allowing more time for failure identification). The estimated financial benefits reach 2 million US dollars and stem from reducing the frequency of explosions at substations by 11%. The technology in question is assessed and recommended based on the results of various experiments, where various monitoring methods are tested, also considering the operation and maintenance costs that constitute an appropriate lifecycle evaluation.

The critical nitrogen dilution curve (CNDC) can be used as a diagnostic tool to assess crop N nutrition during the growing season. Potato cultivars have different biomass production and accumulation of N and consequently different growth patterns. These differences among cultivars may result in different CNDC. The aims were a) to determine the CNDC for different potato cultivars;b) to compare these curves with reference curves;and c) to assess the possibility of using the CNDC to estimate the N nutritional status of the crop. The biomass production and N concentration of shoots and tubers of potato cultivars Innovator, Gem Russet, Umatilla Russet, Bannock Russet and Markies Russet were measured. The harvest index (HI) and N harvest index (NHI) were determined. The coefficient a of the CNDC was similar among cultivars, while the coefficients b for Innovator and Gem Russet (-0.42 and -0.36, respectively) were smaller than those for the other cultivars (average -0.25). HI and NHI were greater in Innovator, smaller in Markies Russet, and intermediated in the other three cultivars. The coefficients b of the CNDC were correlated with HI and NHI (HI, r = -0.62, p < 0.0001 and -0.53, p < 0.0001;NHI, r = -0.60, p < 0.0001 and -0.61, p < 0.0001 for 2004/5 and 2005/6, respectively). The relationship between relative tuber yield (RY) and N nutrition index (NNI) was fit by a quadratic-plateau function. At similar situations of N deficiency, Innovator had lower yield and greater response to N rate than the other potato cultivars. The differences in HI and NHI among cultivars may explain the differences in the coefficient b of the CNDC. The NNI identified the status of N adequately in potato cultivars.

Azithromycin(AZT)is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the group of macrolides that acts against several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria,which has promoted its use in the treatment of different respiratory and sexually transmitted ***,its presence in environmental matrices and in the effluents of conventional wastewater treatment plants has been evidenced in recent years,which reflects the need to develop new treatment alternatives that allow its total removal and minimize the eventual adverse effects,selection of resistant bacterial strains,associated with its presence in water *** sunlight radiation and H2O2 were used to remove AZT from water assessing the effects of operational parameters like the solution initial pH and the peroxide *** indicate that hydroxyl free radical is the main responsible for pollutant removal but acidic solution conditions and larger H2O2 doses negatively affect OHgeneration under the evaluated experimental *** removal was almost complete after 120 min of *** addition,reduction of the organic carbon content in the treated samples was^50.0%;and a significant increase of nitrates concentration in solution was evidenced.

Various post-harvest processes of rice are commonly employed,especially during the off-season,to ensure its consumption feasibility,which often affect the grain *** forms of drying,storage and processing of rice are evaluated to identify their effects on grain *** drying has emerged as an alternative to the widely-used intermittent-drying and fixed-bed-dryer methods of drying paddy *** of drying-air temperatures(between 40℃ and 60℃)according to the rice variety can improve quality,especially for exotic *** stored grain in hygroscopic balance,with water content between 11%to 15%,at temperatures between 16℃ and 20℃ and with intergranular relative humidity near 60%,allows 12 months of storage in a controlled environment without significant *** innovations,notably the application of artificial refrigeration to grain stored in bulk in vertical cylindrical silos and the use of impermeable packaging for storage,ensure the conservation of grain *** different stages and equipments used to obtain polished,brown and parboiled rice result in significant changes in the nutritional value of rice because of the removal of the outermost layers of the *** reduces the nutritional value and physical homogeneity of *** rice retains more bioactive compounds and nutrients because it does not lose the outer layer of the grains in the polishing *** rice,although less nutritious than brown rice,has better grain integrity and milling yield and less loss of nutrients than white rice.

A study was conducted to evaluate the aboveground biomass, nutrient content and the percentages of mycorrhizal colonization in Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus grand＆ plantations in the semiarid region （ 15° 09′ S 43° 49′ W） in the north of the State of Minas Gerais in Brazil. Results show that the total above-ground biomass （dry matter） was 33.6 ***^-1 for E. camaldulensis and 53.1 Mg·ha^-1 for E. grandis. The biomass of the stem wood, leaves, branches, and stein bark for E. camaldulens accounted for 64.4%, 19.6%, 15.4%, and 0.6% of the total biomass, respectively （Table 2）; meanwhile a similar partition of the total above-ground biomass was also found for E. grand＆. The dry matter of leaves and branches of E. camaldulensis accounted for 35% of total biomass, and the contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S in leaves and branches accounted for 15.5%, 0.7%, 12.3%, 22.6%, 1.9%, and 1.4% of those in total above-ground biomass, respectively. In the trunk （bark and wood）, nutrient accumulation in general was lower. Nutrient content of E. grand＆ presented little variation compared with that orE. camaJd^llensis. Wood localized in superior parts of trunk presented a higher concentration of P and bark contained significant amounts of nutrients, especially in E. grand＆. This indicated that leaving vegetal waste is of importance on the site in reducing the loss of tree productivity in this semi-arid region. The two species showed mycotrophy.
