Bottom-Up or Top-Down： Which Is the Best Approach to Improve CSR and Sustainability in Local Contexts？ Reflections From Italian Experiences

This paper reflects on the theme of sustainability and territorial social responsibility, which, in this context, is defined as a pathway promoted by a plurality of public and private actors, for- and non-profit, who find that social cohesion and the relationships that are cultivated in the place from which these diverse "protagonists" come, are the drivers in the construction of shared territorial governance. The efficacy of such processes in the local context (communal, provincial, and regional) is predicated on the culture and on the values that the diverse, networked stakeholders-actors accumulate in their territory (meso level). In developing this theme, the paper is divided into several parts. The first part describes the theoretical context, which is illustrated by an enumeration of experiences realized at the local level in Italy. We then focus our analysis on the experience of territorial governance promoted in the Marches Region. This project was selected as a case study, because it is emblematic of the Italian context; the territory is characterized by the diffuse presence of small businesses in the socio-economic fabric and by the proactive role of the local government. The case allows us to evaluate this paper"s fundamental proposition, that the policies of the European Commission [EC] and the Government of Italy for promoting Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability are not concretely effective when they are not fostered by regional authorities together with local private actors. Furthermore, public initiatives, to be effective, should take into consideration the influence of local culture, the social milieu, and economic factors shaping the environment in which public-private networks arise.

Background: Air pollution is a serious threat to children health. Given that children spend over 80% of their time indoors, understanding transport of pollutants from outdoor to indoor environments is important for assessing the impact of exposure to outdoor pollution on children health. The most common advice given during a smoke pollution episode is to stay indoors. How well this works depends on how clean the indoor air is and how pollutants from outdoor air contribute to pollutants load in indoor air. Objective: To assess the amount of outdoor air pollution coming indoors threatening children health. Methods: A Medline/EMBASE search of scientific articles was performed to evaluate the indoor-to-outdoor (I/O) concentration ratios of two main pollutants: ultrafine particles (UFP) and ozone (O3). Result: Under infiltration condition, the highest I/O ratios (0.6 - 0.9) were usually observed for larger UFP (70 - 100 nm), while the lowest I/O ratios (0.1 - 0.4) occurred typically around 10 - 20 nm. O3 I/O ratios vary according to air exchange and may be 0.6 - 0.8 for interiors having a large volume exchange with outdoor air (i.e. open windows) and 0.3 - 0.4 with conventional air conditioning systems. Conclusions: In the absence of indoor sources or activities, indoor UFP particles originate from outdoors. O3 concentration indoors may reach concentration similar to outdoors. Environmental and energy policies must also explicitly account for all the impacts of fossil fuel combustion on child health and development.

Osteonecrosis is a very rare complication of Crohn's disease(CD).It is not clear if it is related to corticosteroid therapy or if it occurs as an extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel *** present the case of a patient with CD who presented with osteonecrosis of both knees.A 22 years old woman was diagnosed with CD in April 2012(Montreal Classification A2L1 + L4B3p).She was started on prednisolone(40 mg/d),azathioprine(100 mg/d) and messalazine(3 g/d).In July 2012,due to active perianal disease,infliximab therapy was *** September 2012,she had a pelvic abscess complicated by peritonitis and an ileal segmental resection and right hemicolectomy were *** December 2012 she was diagnosed with bilateral septic arthritis of both knees with walking *** was treated with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid,started a physical rehabilitation program and progressively ***,then,bilateral knee pain exacerbated by movement *** resonance imaging showed multiple osseous medullary infarcts in the distal extremity of the femurs,proximal extremity of the tibiae and patellas and no signs of subchondral collapse,which is consistent with *** patient recovered completely and maintains therapy with azathioprine and messalazine.A review of the literature is also done.

Water scarcity is pushing the government,industries and researchers to the development of new strategies for water and wastewater *** approach aimed at the optimization of the water use and minimization of effluent generation was developed at the Centro Experimental ARAMAR(CEA),a nuclear research facility,located in the State of Sao Paulo,*** scale tests followed by a pilot plant treating effluents from some nuclear research facilities have shown the results leading to the conclusion that the effluent zero release concept is *** on the gathered data,a project of an integrated effluent treatment system focusing on water recovery and environmental effluent release reduction has been developed.

The systemic fungal organism, Blastomyces dermatitidis causes blastomycosis in animals and hu-mans. This study was designed to evaluate antibody detection in 55 serial serum specimens from 9 dogs with blastomycosis using B. dermatitidis yeast lysate antigens produced from two human isolates (B5896;B5931) and two dog isolates (ERC-2;T-58) with the indirect enzyme linked im-munosorbent assay (ELISA;peroxidase system) to determine an optimal lysate antigen(s) for use in the ELISA to detect antibody in the dog serum specimens. The mean absorbance values when the lysate antigens were compared with respect to their ability to detect antibody in the day 0 sera from the 9 dogs were 1.024 (ERC-2), 1.351 (B5896), 1.700 (B5931) and 2.084 (T-58) respectively. All of the reagents exhibited a high level of sensitivity and in all instances the amount of antibody declined as the time interval post-treatment increased, but the T-58 lysate prepared from the dog isolate from Tennessee was the optimal reagent. We continue to evaluate antigens for B. derma-titidis antibody detection in different immunodiagnostic assays.
