Residual activity of cetrimide and chlorhexidine on Enterococcus faecalis-infected root canals

Effective final irrigation regimen is an important step in order to achieve better disinfection and ensure residual antimicrobial effects after root canal preparation. The aim of this study was to compare the residual antimicrobial activity of 0.2% cetrimide, and 0.2% and 2% chlorhexidine in root canals infected with Enterococcus faecalis. Biofilms of E. faecalis were grown on uniradicular roots for 4 weeks. After root canal preparation, root canals were irrigated with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid （EDTA） to remove the smear layer. The roots were randomly divided into three experimental groups （n=26） according to the final irrigating solution： Group I, 5 mL 0.2% cetrimide; Group II, 5 mL 0.2% chlorhexidine; and Group III, 5 mL 2% chlorhexidine. Samples were collected for 50 days to denote the presence of bacterial growth. The proportion of ungrown specimens over 50 days was evaluated using the nonparametric Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Differences among groups were tested using the log-rank test and the level of statistical significance was set at P〈0.05. The highest survival value was found with 2% chlorhexidine, showing statistically significant differences from the other two groups. At 50 days, E. faecalisgrowth was detected in 69.23% specimens in Groups I and II, and in 34.61% specimens of Group III. There were no significant differences between 0.2% cetrimide and 0.2% chlorhexidine. Final irrigation with 2% chlorhexidine showed greater residual activity than 0.2% chlorhexidine and 0.2% cetrimide in root canals infected with E. faecalis.

Antimicrobial activity of alexidine alone and associated with N-acetylcysteine against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of alexidine（ALX）,alone and combined with N-acetylcysteine（NAC）,in eradicating two Enterococcus faecalis strain *** biofilms of *** ATCC 29212 and the clinical isolate *** D1 were grown in the MBEC-high-throughput device for 24 h and were exposed to five twofold dilutions of ALX（2%–0.007 8%）alone and combined with100 mg？mL21NAC,for 1 and 5 *** was defined as 100%kill of biofilm *** Student’s t-test was used to compare the efficacy of the associations of the two *** 1-min contact time,ALX eradicated the biofilms at all concentrations except for 0.007 8%and 0.015 6%–0.007 8%with *** ATCC 29212 and *** D1,*** results for eradication and concentration were obtained when it was combined with 100 mg？*** 5 min of contact time,ALX alone and combined with NAC eradicated all enterococci *** showed antimicrobial properties against the two *** strain biofilms tested at very low concentrations,and its combined use with NAC was not seen to enhance its activity.

While the association between obesity,type 2 diabetes(T2D)and the presence of steatosis has been established since the beginning of the last century(1),it was not until 1980 that the first references were made about a form of histologic liver lesion designated as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH).NASH is characterised by the presence of a variable degree of steatosis accompanied by lobular inflammatory infiltrate and hepatocellular damage with or without ***,the broader term of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)was accepted,which more accurately encompass the entire spectrum of lesions that appear in these patients(2).Ever since then,NAFLD has become progressively the primary cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries(3).

The consumption of alcoholic beverages is harmful to human health. In recent years, consumption patterns of alcoholic beverages have changed in our society, and binge drinking has generalized. It is considered to be a socio-sanitary problem with few known consequences in terms of individual and third-party social impacts(in the form of violence or traffic accidents) and its organic impact(affects the liver and other organs and systems, such as the nervous and cardiovascular systems) and represents an important financial burden due to its increasing economic impact. This review provides a global approach to binge drinking and emphasizes its epidemiological character, the effect of this type of consumption and the possible management of a problem with an increasing tendency in our society.

Impact of an acute hemodynamic response-guided protocol for primary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding

AIM To evaluate the long-term outcome of an acute hemodynamic response-guided protocol in which acute responders to intravenous propranolol received traditional nonselective beta-blockers(NSBBs) and acute nonresponders received *** Retrospective review of a protocol for primary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding guided by the acute hemodynamic response to intravenous propranolol. Fifty-two acute responders treated with traditional NSBB(i.e. propranolol or nadolol) were compared with 24 acute nonresponders receiving carvedilol. A second hemodynamic study was performed in 27 and 13 patients, respectively. The primary endpoint was development of first or further decompensation. Secondary endpoints included death from any cause, association between acute and chronic hemodynamic response, and baseline clinical and laboratory variables related to the acute hemodynamic *** Acute responders and acute nonresponders presented similar 1, 2, and 3-year probabilities of first decompensation(NSBB: 0%, 13.7%, 26.1% vs carvedilol: 0%, 20%, 20%, P = 0.968) or further decompensation(21.2%, 26.1%, 40.9% vs 21.2%, 50.0%, 50.0%, P = 0.525). A previous episode of hepatic encephalopathy was the only independent predictor of decompensation [hazard ratio(95% confidence interval): 8.03(2.76-23.37)]. Mortality rates were similar in acute responders and acute nonresponders with compensated(P = 0.428) or decompensated cirrhosis(P = 0.429). No clinical, laboratory, endoscopic or hemodynamic parameter predicted the acute hemodynamic response. In patients receiving traditional NSBB, the acute and chronic changes of hepatic venous pressure gradient were correlated(r = 0.59, P = 0.001). Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a strong genetic background and is triggered by environmental *** evidence supports CD6,a lymphocyte surface receptor mostly expressed by T cells,as a putative target in ***,a humanized anti-CD6 antibody has been assayed for the treatment of certain autoimmune disorders,including ***,we present novel evidence in mice and humans for a direct involvement of CD6 in psoriasis ***,an attenuated form of imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like skin inflammation was demonstrated in CD6-deficient mice,as deduced from lower epidermal thickness and local reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines,namely,***,isolated CD4+CD62L+T cells from CD6-deficient mice displayed decreased in vitro T-helper type 17 ***,a statistically significant association between CD6 single-nucleotide polymorphisms(rs17824933,rs11230563 and rs12360861)and more severe forms of psoriasis was demonstrated in a cohort of 304 patients at three public hospitals from the metropolitan area of *** together,these results provide new supportive evidence of the contribution of the CD6 lymphocyte receptor in psoriasis at both experimental and clinical levels.
