A shallow subtidal （3 m deep） meiofaunal assemblage in Los Abrigos Bay, Tenerife, Canary Islands was sam- pled during May 2000-April 2001. The main aims were to （1） find temporal variations in meiofaunal assem- blage structure and overall abundance, as well as in the most abundant meiofaunal species throughout the study period, and （2） identify environmental variables （sedimentary composition, organic matter content, and total nitrogen） that better explain meiofaunal assemblage structure during the study year. The most abundant species were the nematodes Siphonolaimus sp. 2 and Catanema sp., which represented 46.2% of the overall meiofaunal abundances and varied significantly throughout the study duration. Overall meio- faunal abundance and the most abundant taxonomic groups （nematodes, copepods, and oligochaetes） showed significant temporal variations during the study period. Nematodes overwhelmingly dominated during the study period, ranging from 78% in May to 97.34% in February. Multivariate analyses showed seasonality in meiofaunal community structure during the study year, with the lowest abundances in May. Over the past decades,empirical evidence has been accumulated indicating that olfactory information plays a fundamental role in bird life ***,many aspects of avian olfaction remain poorly *** purpose was to broaden the knowledge about the importance of the sense of smell in some neglected bird groups:psittaciformes and ramphastids,and to compare how the response varied between the *** of the lack of information about the use of chemical cues for locating food in fruit-eating species,we also aimed to delve into this *** conducted a 3-choice(water/vinegar/papaya and banana juice)scent test in 5 Costa Rican native species:scarlet macaw(Ara macao),red-lored amazon(Amazona autumnalis),yellow-naped amazon(Amazona auropalliata),keel-billed toucan(Ramphastos sulfuratus),and yellow-throated toucan(Ramphastos ambiguus).Results revealed that macaws and toucans allocated signiﬁcantly more time to interacting with the fruit scent container,indicating that these species can perceive the volatile chemicals emitted by ripe fruits and that they can use this information to make foraging ***,amazons did not dedicate more time to interact with the fruit *** research provides theﬁrst evidence of the ability to exploit chemical volatile cues in macaws and toucans.

The last decade has witnessed a growing appreciation of the fundamental role played by an early assembly of a diverse and balanced gut microbiota and its subsequent maintenance for future health of the host. Gut microbiota is currently viewed as a key regulator of a fluent bidirectional dialogue between the gut and the brain(gut-brain axis). A number of preclinical studies have suggested that the microbiota and its genome(microbiome) may play a key role in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Furthermore, alterations in the gut microbiota composition in humans have also been linked to a variety of neuropsychiatric conditions, including depression, autism and Parkinson's disease. However, it is not yet clear whether these changes in the microbiome are causally related to such diseases or are secondary effects thereof. In this respect, recent studies in animals have indicated that gut microbiota transplantation can transfer a behavioral phenotype, suggesting that the gut microbiota may be a modifiable factor modulating the development or pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric conditions. Further studies are warranted to establish whether or not the findings of preclinical animal experiments can be generalized to humans. Moreover, although different communication routes between the microbiota and brain have been identified, further studies must elucidate all the underlying mechanisms involved. Such research is expected to contribute to the design of strategies to modulate the gut microbiota and its functions with a view to improving mental health, and thus provide opportunities to improve the management of psychiatric diseases. Here, we review the evidence supporting a role of the gut microbiota in neuropsychiatric disorders and the state of the art regarding the mechanisms underlying its contribution to mental illness and health. Effective final irrigation regimen is an important step in order to achieve better disinfection and ensure residual antimicrobial effects after root canal preparation. The aim of this study was to compare the residual antimicrobial activity of 0.2% cetrimide, and 0.2% and 2% chlorhexidine in root canals infected with Enterococcus faecalis. Biofilms of E. faecalis were grown on uniradicular roots for 4 weeks. After root canal preparation, root canals were irrigated with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid （EDTA） to remove the smear layer. The roots were randomly divided into three experimental groups （n=26） according to the final irrigating solution： Group I, 5 mL 0.2% cetrimide; Group II, 5 mL 0.2% chlorhexidine; and Group III, 5 mL 2% chlorhexidine. Samples were collected for 50 days to denote the presence of bacterial growth. The proportion of ungrown specimens over 50 days was evaluated using the nonparametric Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Differences among groups were tested using the log-rank test and the level of statistical significance was set at P〈0.05. The highest survival value was found with 2% chlorhexidine, showing statistically significant differences from the other two groups. At 50 days, E. faecalisgrowth was detected in 69.23% specimens in Groups I and II, and in 34.61% specimens of Group III. There were no significant differences between 0.2% cetrimide and 0.2% chlorhexidine. Final irrigation with 2% chlorhexidine showed greater residual activity than 0.2% chlorhexidine and 0.2% cetrimide in root canals infected with E. faecalis.

Demand response is a basic tool used to develop modern power systems and electricity markets. Residential and commercial segments account for 40%–50% of the overall electricity demand. These segments need to overcome major obstacles before they can be included in a demand response portfolio. The objective of this paper is to tackle some of the technical barriers and explain how the potential of enabling technology(smart meters) can be harnessed, to evaluate the potential of customers for demand response(end-uses and their behaviors) and,moreover, to validate customers’ effective response to market prices or system events by means of non-intrusive methods. A tool based on the Hilbert transform is improved herein to identify and characterize the most suitable loads for the aforesaid purpose, whereby important characteristics such as cycling frequency, power level and pulse width are identified. The proposed methodology allows the filtering of aggregated load according to the amplitudes of elemental loads, independently of the frequency of their behaviors that could be altered by internal or external inputs such as weather or demand response. In this way, the assessment and verification of customer response can be improved by solving the problem of load aggregation with the help of integral transforms.

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of alexidine（ALX）,alone and combined with N-acetylcysteine（NAC）,in eradicating two Enterococcus faecalis strain *** biofilms of *** ATCC 29212 and the clinical isolate *** D1 were grown in the MBEC-high-throughput device for 24 h and were exposed to five twofold dilutions of ALX（2%–0.007 8%）alone and combined with100 mg？mL21NAC,for 1 and 5 *** was defined as 100%kill of biofilm *** Student’s t-test was used to compare the efficacy of the associations of the two *** 1-min contact time,ALX eradicated the biofilms at all concentrations except for 0.007 8%and 0.015 6%–0.007 8%with *** ATCC 29212 and *** D1,*** results for eradication and concentration were obtained when it was combined with 100 mg？*** 5 min of contact time,ALX alone and combined with NAC eradicated all enterococci *** showed antimicrobial properties against the two *** strain biofilms tested at very low concentrations,and its combined use with NAC was not seen to enhance its activity.

Many studies have analysed the effects that design elements,such as lighting and colour,have on students’cognitive *** analyses,while providing useful information,do not allow researchers to compare the effects of multiple design *** objective of the present study is to analyse the relative influence of lighting,colour and geometry on attention and memory,the main cognitive functions that underlie learning,and on *** a controlled,virtual reality(VR)-based experiment,200 university students(100 male/100 female)performed attention,memory and preference tests in classrooms with different configurations of lighting(colour temperature and illuminance),colour(saturation and hue)and geometry(height and width).The results identified significant gender-based differences,which demonstrates the need to segment,by gender,samples in this type of *** had the greatest influence,significantly affecting males’memories,females’attention and the preferences of both *** was also an influential element,significantly affecting females’attention,while geometry was the least ***,it should be highlighted that attention was the metric most sensitive to design *** results may be of interest to architects,interior designers and engineers who wish to create classrooms that satisfy students’psychological needs.

Crop growth in greenhouses is basically determined by the climate variables in the environment and by the amounts of water and fertilizers supplied by *** management of these factors depends on the expertise of agricultural technicians and farmers,usually assisted by control systems installed within the *** this context,decision support features enable us to incorporate invaluable human experience so thatwe can take quick and effective decisions to ensure efficient crop *** work describes a real-time decision support system for greenhouse tomatoes that supports decisions at three stages–the supervision stage identifies climate sensor faults,the control stage maintains climate variables at setpoints,and the strategic stage identifies diseases affecting the crop and changes climate variables accordingly to minimize *** DSS was implemented by integrating a real-time rule-based tool into the control *** results show that the system increases climate control effectiveness,while providing support in preventing diseaseswhich are difficult to *** system was tested by simulating the appearance of the disease and observing the real *** main contribution has been to demonstrate that production rules,which aremature and well-known in the artificial intelligence domain,can act as a shared technology for the whole *** means that fault detection,temperature control and disease monitoring features are not dealt with in isolation.
