Potential of Bamboo Species Guadua trinii and Guadua angustifolia for Nanocellulose Production

Non-traditional lignocellulosic materials are a significant resource for producing high-value products, including nanocellulose. This work studied the nanocellulose obtention from chemical pulps of the two fast-growing bamboo species, Guadua trinii , and Guadua angustifolia . Chemical pulps were produced by soda-anthraquinone (S) pulping from both autohydrolysis-pretreated (H) and unpretreated bamboo chips. Autohydrolysis-pretreated (SHP) and unpretreated soda-anthraquinone (AQ) (SP) pulps were characterized by yield, Kappa number, alpha, beta, and gamma cellulose, degree of polymerization, water retention value, and crystallinity. The nanocellulose was produced by a sequential chemical oxidation treatment (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl, TEMPO reagent) and mechanical nanofibrillation. Nanocellulose was characterized by carboxylic group content and viscosity. The results revealed that autohydrolysis pretreatment resulted in a higher hemicelluloses extraction in G. angustifolia . In contrast, the pulping yield of unpretreated samples was higher for G. trinii , and the soda-AQ pulps from this species exhibited better delignification than the autohydrolysis-pretreated pulps. The crystallinity index values of the obtained pulps were high (>80%), and the alpha-cellulose contents were similar. The viscosities of the aqueous nanocellulose suspensions were higher for the nanocellulose solutions obtained from the unpretreated soda-AQ pulps. Besides, nanocellulose from G. trinii unpretreated soda-AQ pulps had a higher rate of carboxylic groups. The results of this work are significant in assessing the potential of both bamboo species as a source of high-value products within the biorefinery framework because the viscosities of the aqueous nanocellulose suspensions depend on the size and shape of nanofibrils. It has significant importance for industrial unit operations and potential applications.

Kinetics of carbothermic reduction of mar.atite in presence of lime

The direct carbothermic reduction of mar.atite in the presence of lime was studied by thermogravimetric method to determine the technical feasibility to produce Zn(g)without polluting with SO2(g).X-ray diffraction analysis of partially reacted samples indicated that the reduction occurred through the formation of ZnCaOS and Ca2Fe2O5 as intermediate products to yield Zn(g),and solid Fe and Ca S as the final *** had the major effect on the rate of *** conversion of mar.atite was obtained at 1100℃in about 10 min using 300 mg samples with molar ratio of(Zn,Fe)S:CaO:C equal to 1:1:*** kinetics of the overall reduction reaction was analyzed by the model ln(1-X)=-kt,which represented the data well up to a fractional conversion of 0.95 in the temperature range of 1000-1150℃.The determined activation energy in this temperature range was 257 k J/*** results demonstrated the technical feasibility to produce Zn(g)by this method without producing noxious SO2(g)emissions.

Purpose: The primary aim of this paper is to design, create, and improve functional and artificial Bruch’s membranes (BM) using bioengineering techniques, which can be applied in the treatment of maculopathies by supporting the growth and maintenance of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells, thereby potentially enabling subretinal implantation in patients. Methods: We fabricated by electrospinning ultrathin 3D nanofibrous membranes from Polycaprolactone (PCL), and different concentrations of gelatin (5%, 15% and 30%). ARPE-19 cells were seeded onto these artificial membranes. MTT assays were performed in order to evaluate ARPE-19 cell viability and cytotoxicity. IF assays were realized to observe the ARPE-19 cells onto each membrane. Ultrastructure of the modified Bruch’s membrane and ARPE-19 morphology after 25 days of culture were studied with transmission and scanning electron microscopy. To evaluate expression changes in markers of ARPE-19 (RPE65 and ZO-1) qRT-PCR assays were realized. Data from three independent experiments were pooled and expressed as the mean SD. A confidence level of P 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results ARPE-19 cells grew on PCL/Gelatin membranes mainly in PCL/30% gelatin combination, which had not cytotoxic effect. RPE65/cytokeratin-18/ and actin-positive ARPE-19 cells formed a correctly orientated monolayer of polygonal cells with morphological polarity. The apical cell surfaces exhibited abundant protruding microfolds. Moreover, zones of polygonal border look as if ARPE-19 cells fused among, suggesting the presence of tight junctions. The expression of RPE65 and ZO-1 was unchanged. Conclusions: PCL/30% Gelatine membranes may imitate the natural BM to such extent that they support RPE-cells and exhibited RPE-like morphology. Lignin depolymerization for phenolic monomers production by sustainable processes

Biomass wastes(almond shell and olive tree pruning) were used in this work as raw materials for the extraction of high purity lignin by different delignification methods. A pretreatment stage was carried out to remove the major hemicelluloses content in the solid feedstocks. Afterward, two sulfur-free pulping processes(soda and organosolv) were applied to extract the largest fraction of lignin. The extracted lignin contained in the liquors was isolated using selective precipitation methods to design a tailor-made technique for obtaining high-purity lignin(in all cases more 90% of purity was reached). Soda process allowed the extraction of more lignin(around 40%–47%) than organosolv process(lower than 20%) regardless of the lignocellulosic source *** the different lignin samples were isolated and characterized, they were depolymerized for the obtaining of small phenolic compounds. Three main streams were produced after the reaction: phenolic enriched oil, residual lignin and coke. After the purification of these fractions, their quantifications and characterization were *** most abundant product of the reaction was residual lignin generated by the undesirable repolymerization of the initial lignin with yields around 30%–45%. The yield of the stream enriched in phenolic oil was higher than 20%. Coke, the lowest added-value product, presented a yield lower than 12% in all the cases. Lignin from organosolv presented higher phenolic oil yields, mainly due to their lower molecular size. This parameter was, thus, considered a key factor to obtain higher yields.

Distribution of DNA damage in the human sperm nucleus:implications of the architecture of the sperm head

Advantages of early cholecystectomy in clinical practice of a terciary care center

BACKGROUND:Despite a number of studies show the superiority of early over delayed cholecystectomy in the treatment of acute cholecystitis,there is still controversy over the time for *** study aimed to assess the use of early versus delayed cholecystectomy for the treatment of acute cholecystitis in terms of complications,conversion to open surgery and mean hospital ***:We collected patients with acute cholecystitis treated at a referral center for a year,and retrospectively analyzed the chosen therapeutic approach,the percentage of conversion of early cholecystectomy to open surgery,appearance of surgical complications,and mean hospital ***:The study included 117 patients,44 women and 73 men,who had a mean age of 67.36±15.74 *** cholecystectomy was chosen in 31(26.5%) and delayed cholecystectomy in 74 patients(63.2%).Of the 74 patients,28(37.8%) required emergency performance of delayed cholecystectomy,and 19(25.7%) had not undergone surgery by the end of the *** no differences were observed between early and delayed cholecystectomy in terms of surgical complications and conversion to open surgery,mean hospital stay was nevertheless significantly shorter in the early versus the delayed cholecystectomy group(8.32±4.98 vs 15.96±8.89 days).CONCLUSION:Under the routine working conditions of a hospital that is neither specially dedicated to the surgical treatment of acute cholecystitis nor provided with specific management guidelines,early cholecystectomy can reduce the hospital stay without increase of the conversion rate or complications.
