Solar-assisted photocatalytic water splitting using defective UiO-66 solids from modulated synthesis

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)are attracting increasing interests as photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen production from *** paper reports on a comparative study of using either acetic acid(AA)or trifluoroacetic acid(TFA)as the representative UiO-66 organic modulators for synthesizing visible light responsive UiO-66(Zr)-X(X:nH_(2) or nO_(2))photocatalysts for water *** results show that photocatalytic hydrogen generation from a water/methanol mixture can be improved by varying the nature and amount of the modulator employed to prepare the different UiO-66(Zr)-X(X:nH_(2) or nO_(2))solid ***-66(Zr)-nH_(2) was the most active photocatalyst,followed by UiO-66(Zr)-nO_(2),both prepared with 12 equivalents of AA with respect to the organic *** UiO-66(Zr)-nH_(2) solid was more active than the parent MOF in photocatalytic overall water splitting(OWS)(H_(2) and O_(2) production of 450 and 160μmol·g^(-1),respectively,in 5 h;apparent quantum yield(AQY)at 400 nm of 0.06%)in the absence of methanol and compares favourably with analogous *** on the photocatalytic activity of the most active solids of both series was obtained by means of a series of techniques,including ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis)diffuse reflectance,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),laser flash photolysis(LFP),electron spin resonance(ESR),photoluminescence and photoelectrochemical measurements together with density functional theory(dFT)*** results showed that organic acid modulators can be used to enhance the photocatalytic activity of missing linker UiO-66 defective materials in solar-powered water splitting.

Breast cancer as photodynamic therapy target: Enhanced therapeutic efficiency by overview of tumor complexity

Photodynamic therapy is a minimally invasive and clinically approved procedure for eliminating selected malignant cells with specific light activation of a photosensitizer agent. Whereas interstitial and intra-operative approaches have been investigated for the ablation of a broad range of superficial or bulky solid tumors such as breast cancer, the majority of approved photodynamic therapy protocols are for the treatment of superficial lesions of skin and luminal organs. This review article will discuss recent progress in research focused mainly on assessing the efficacies of various photosensitizers used in photodynamic therapy, as well as the combinatory strategies of various therapeutic modalities for improving treatments of parenchymal and/or stromal tissues of breast cancer solid tumors. Cytotoxic agents are used in cancer treatments for their effect on rapidly proliferating cancer cells. However, such therapeutics often lack specificity, which can lead to toxicity and undesirable side effects. Many approaches are designed to targettumors. Selective therapies can be established by focusing on distinctive intracellular(receptors, apoptotic pathways, multidrug resistance system, nitric oxidemediated stress) and environmental(glucose, pH) differences between tumor and healthy tissue. A rational design of effective combination regimens for breast cancer treatment involves a better understanding of the mechanisms and molecular interactions of cytotoxic agents that underlie drug resistance and sensitivity.

Advantages of early cholecystectomy in clinical practice of a terciary care center

BACKGROUnd:despite a number of studies show the superiority of early over delayed cholecystectomy in the treatment of acute cholecystitis,there is still controversy over the time for *** study aimed to assess the use of early versus delayed cholecystectomy for the treatment of acute cholecystitis in terms of complications,conversion to open surgery and mean hospital ***:We collected patients with acute cholecystitis treated at a referral center for a year,and retrospectively analyzed the chosen therapeutic approach,the percentage of conversion of early cholecystectomy to open surgery,appearance of surgical complications,and mean hospital ***:The study included 117 patients,44 women and 73 men,who had a mean age of 67.36±15.74 *** cholecystectomy was chosen in 31(26.5%) and delayed cholecystectomy in 74 patients(63.2%).Of the 74 patients,28(37.8%) required emergency performance of delayed cholecystectomy,and 19(25.7%) had not undergone surgery by the end of the *** no differences were observed between early and delayed cholecystectomy in terms of surgical complications and conversion to open surgery,mean hospital stay was nevertheless significantly shorter in the early versus the delayed cholecystectomy group(8.32±4.98 vs 15.96±8.89 days).COnCLUSIOn:Under the routine working conditions of a hospital that is neither specially dedicated to the surgical treatment of acute cholecystitis nor provided with specific management guidelines,early cholecystectomy can reduce the hospital stay without increase of the conversion rate or complications.

Glutathione depleting drugs, antioxidants and intestinal calcium absorption

Glutathione （GSH） is a tripeptide that constitutes one of the main intracellular reducing compounds. The normal content of GSH in the intestine is essential to optimize the intestinal Ca2＋ absorption. The use of GSH depleting drugs such as dL-buthionine-S,R-sulfoximine, menadione or vitamin K3, sodium deoxycholate or diets enriched in fructose, which induce several features of the metabolic syndrome, produce inhibition of the intestinal Ca2＋ ab-sorption. The GSH depleting drugs switch the redox state towards an oxidant condition provoking oxida-tive/nitrosative stress and inflammation, which lead to apoptosis and/or autophagy of the enterocytes. Either the transcellular Ca transport or the paracellular Ca route are altered by GSH depleting drugs. The gene and/or protein expression of transporters involved in the transcellular Ca2＋ pathway are decreased. The favonoids quercetin and naringin highly abrogate the inhibition of intestinal Ca2＋ absorption, not only by restoration of the GSH levels in the intestine but also by their anti-apoptotic properties. Ursodeoxycholic acid, melatonin and glutamine also block the inhibition of Ca2＋ transport caused by GSH depleting drugs. The use of any of these antioxidants to ameliorate the intestinal Ca2＋ absorption under oxidant conditions associated with different pathologies in humans requires more investigation with regards to the safety,pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of them.

Breast cancer is the predominant form of carcinoma among women worldwide,with 70%of advanced patients developing bone metastases,with a high mortality *** this sense,the bone marrow(BM)mesenchymal stem/stromal cells(MSCs)are critical for BM/bone homeostasis,and failures in their functionality,transform the BM into a premetastatic niche(PMn).We previously found that BM-MSCs from advanced breast cancer patients(BCPs,infiltrative ductal carcinoma,stage III-B)have an abnormal *** work aims to study some of the metabolic and molecular mechanisms underlying MSCs shift from a normal to an abnormal profile in this group of patients.A comparative analysis was undertaken,which included self-renewal capacity,morphology,proliferation capacity,cell cycle,reactive oxygen species(ROS)levels,and senescence-associatedβ‑galactosidase(SA‑β‑gal)staining of BMderived MSCs isolated from 14 BCPs and 9 healthy volunteers(HVs).Additionally,the expression and activity of the telomerase subunit TERT,as well as telomere length,were *** levels of pluripotency,osteogenic,and osteoclastogenic genes(OCT-4,SOX-2,M-CAM,RUnX-2,BMP-2,CCL-2,M-CSF,and IL-6)were also *** results showed that MSCs from BCPs had reduced,self-renewal and proliferation *** cells also exhibited inhibited cell cycle progression and phenotypic changes,such as an enlarged and flattened ***,there was an increase in ROS and senescence levels and a decrease in the functional capacity of TERT to preserve telomere *** also found an increase in pro-inflammatory/pro-osteoclastogenic gene expression and a decrease in pluripotency gene *** conclude that these changes could be responsible for the abnormal functional profile that MSCs show in this group of patients.

Effects of asymmetric dimethylarginine on renal arteries in portal hypertension and cirrhosis

AIM To evaluate the effects of asymmetric dimethylarginine(AdMA) in renal arteries from portal hypertensive and cirrhotic *** Rat renal arteries from Sham(n = 15), pre-hepatic portal hypertension(PPVL; n = 15) and bile duct ligation and excision-induced cirrhosis(BdL; n = 15) were precontracted with norepinephrine, and additional contractions were induced with AdMA(10-6-10-3 mol/L), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide(nO) synthase. Concentration-response curves to acetylcholine(1 × 10-9^(-3) × 10^(-6) mol/L) were determined in precontractedrenal artery segments with norepinephrine in the absence and in the presence of AdMA. Kidneys were collected to determine the protein expression and activity of dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase(ddAH), an enzyme that catabolizes AdMA. RESULTS In renal arteries precontracted with norepinephrine, AdMA caused endothelium-dependent contractions. The pd 2 values to AdMA were similar in the Sham and PPVL groups(4.20 ± 0.08 and 4.11 ± 0.09, P > 0.05, respectively), but were lower than those of the BdL group(4.79 ± 0.16, P ne-induced endothelium-dependent relaxation that did not differ, in terms of p d2 and maximal relaxation, among the 3 groups studied. Treatment with AdMA(3 × 10^(-4) mol/L) inhibited acetylcholine-induced relaxation in the 3 groups, but the inhibition was higher(P n the BdL group compared with that for the Sham and PPVL groups. The m RnA and protein expression of ddAH-1 were similar in kidneys from the three groups. Conversely, ddAH-2 expression was increased(P n PPVL and further enhanced(P n the BdL group. However, renal ddAH activity was significantly decreased in the BdL group. COnCLUSIOn Cirrhosis increased the inhibitory effect of AdMA on basal- and induced-release of nO in renal arteries, and decreased ddAH activity in the kidney.

Effect of femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery on the optic nerve head and the macula

AIM: To evaluate the effect of femtosecond laser-assisted lens surgery(FLALS;cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange) on the structure of the optic nerve head and the ***: This prospective longitudinal study included healthy eyes undergoing FLALS. Eyes with glaucoma or any other ocular disease that could alter optical coherence tomography results were excluded. Retinal nerve fiber layer(RnFL), Bruch’s membrane opening-minimum rim width(BMO-MRW) and macular thickness(MT) were measured preoperatively, 1 and 6 mo after surgery using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(Sd-OCT). Changes between preoperative and postoperative values were ***: A total of 87 eyes of 46 patients were included in this study. Preoperative RnFL, BMO-MRW and MT in microns(μm) were 100.77±10.39, 330.31±49.99 and 276.30±33.39, respectively. Postoperative RnFL, BMO-MRW and MT were 104.74±11.55, 348.32±54.05 and 279.83±22.65 1 mo after surgery and 102.93±11.17, 343.11±53.4 and 278.90±22.19 6 mo after surgery, respectively;which equals an increase of 3.93%, 5.45% and 1.27%,respectively, 1 mo after surgery, and 2.14%, 3.87% and 0.94% 6 mo after surgery. The differences between the preoperative and the postoperative RnFL and BMO-MRW values were statistically significant(Pding MT values, there were not statistically significant differences(P=0.26).COnCLUSIOn: Our study suggests that FLALS does not have a negative impact on the structural status of the optic nerve head in healthy eyes, assessed by Sd-OCT. There is a slight increase in the values of RnFL, BMO-MRW and MT 1 mo and 6 mo after surgery.

Cigarette smoking, dietary habits and genetic polymorphisms in GSTT1, GSTM1 and CYP1A1 metabolic genes: A case-control study in oncohematological diseases

AIM To analyze the association between oncohematological diseases and GSTT1 /GSTM1 /CYP1A1 polymorphisms, dietary habits and smoking, in an argentine hospitalbased case-control *** This hospital-based case-control study involved 125 patients with oncohematological diseases and 310 control subjects. A questionnaire was used to obtain sociodemographic data and information about habits. Blood samples were collected, and dnA was extracted using salting out methods. deletions in GSTT1 and GSTM1 (null genotypes) were addressed by PCR. CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism was detected by PCR-RFLP. Odds ratio(OR) and 95%CI were calculated to estimate the association between each variable studied and oncohematological *** Women showed lower risk of disease compared to men(OR 0.52, 95%CI: 0.34-0.82, P = 0.003). Higher levels of education(> 12 years) were significantly associated with an increased risk, compared to complete primary school or less(OR 3.68, 95%CI: 1.82-7.40, P djusted for age and sex). With respect to tobacco, none of the smoking categories showed association with oncohematological diseases. Regarding dietary habits, consumption of grilled/barbecued meat 3 or more times per month showed significant association with an increased risk of disease(OR 1.72, 95%CI: 1.08-2.75, P = 0.02). daily consumption of coffee also was associated with an increased risk(OR 1.77, 95%CI: 1.03-3.03, P = 0.03). Results for GSTT1, GSTM1 and CYP1A1 polymorphisms showed no significant association with oncohematological diseases. When analyzing the interaction between polymorphisms and tobacco smoking or dietary habits, no statistically significant associations that modify disease risk were found. COnCLUSIOn We reported an increased risk of oncohematological diseases associated with meat and coffee intake. We did not find significant associations between genetic polymorphisms and blood cancer.
