Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(mCFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of mCFA salts(DIC)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 CFU)or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)F4(1.5×10~9 CFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the ETEC F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of DIC was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(Pmicrobiota(16 S rRNA gene sequencing),this additive tended(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the ETEC F4 challenge,DIC prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in Dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by DIC supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IEL)counts were lowered by DIC in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With ETEC F4,the IEL counts were higher with DIC on d 8 PI(P=0.08).Conclusions:This study c

One of the most important issues to resolve in parts manufactured from rapid manufacturing (Rm) technologies is to know their behavior working under real conditions. Total quality manufacturing (TQm) is only possible if mechanical properties are well known in the design stage depending on the processing parameters. This work is mainly focused on testing of several samples made with different selective laser sintering (SLS) parameters and technologies. This procedure is the starting point to establish a basis for designing for Rm and the standardization of Rm testing. The experiments and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) analyzed the effects of several factors on mechanical properties. The SLS technologies were 3DSystem and EOS. The results show which factor has a large effect on the variables and the interaction between them. The conclusions are very useful for developing rules for designing (designing for Rm) and creating new standard rules (ISO, AISI, and DIN) for Rm materials and parts testing. The ANOVA gives a better knowledge of the effects of these factors and eliminates unimportant parameters.

A Fourier transform infrared derivative spectroscopy(FTIR-DS)method has been developed for determining furosemide(FUR)in pharmaceutical solid dosage *** method involves the extraction of FUR from tablets with N,N-dimethylformamide by sonication and direct measurement in liquid phase mode using a reduced path length *** general,the spectra were measured in transmission mode and the equipment was configured to collect a spectrum at 4 cm^(-1) resolution and a 13 s collection time(10 scans co-added).The spectra were collected between 1400 cm^(-1) and 450 cm^(-1).Derivative spectroscopy was used for data processing and quantitative measurement using the peak area of the second order spectrum of the major spectral band found at 1165 cm^(-1)(SO_(2) stretching of FUR)with baseline *** method fulfilled most validation requirements in the 2 mg/mL and 20 mg/mL range,with a 0.9998 coefficient of determination obtained by simple calibration model,and a general coefficient of variation mean recovery for the proposed assay method resulted within the(100±3)%over the 80%–120% range of the target *** results agree with a pharmacopoeial method and,therefore,could be considered interchangeable.

Blaptica dubia(Serville, 1838) and B. interior Hebard, 1921 were considered to be cryptic species. The characteristics originally proposed for their identification are not *** the relationship between the two species should be re-considered. As a comparative approach and to analyze intraspecific variability, morphological and morphometric methods were performed. Traditional and new characters such as wing shape and pronotum contour were utilized. We found significant differences between both species(p measurements or in the shape and size of the pronotum between the species. The variability gradient does not allow an accurate identification of species neither with the male genitalia or the pronotal *** on the obtained results, B. interior Hebard 1921 is considered to be a junior synonym of B. dubia(Serville, 1838).

The epithelial to mesenchymal transition(EmT)is a cellular program that drives de-differentiation of cells in both physiological and pathological *** of the characteristics of cells describing an EmT is the(re)acquisition of a motility capacity that allows them to migrate through the original tissue as well as to other sites in the *** molecular mechanisms that control the EmT are rapidly emerging and here we add to the idea that the adaptation required for cells to commit to the EmT includes adjustments of the translation machinery and metabolic pathways to cope with a high demand of extracellular components.

Nothofagus pumilio forests in Tierra del Fuego are the southernmost forests in the world,where extreme climate conditions represent a challenge to attain sustainable forest *** forestry was proposed as an alternative to increase the species conservation in managed ***,we synthetized results related to the implementation of a variable retention harvesting based on a combination of aggregate patches and dispersed retention during the last 18 years comparing with other silviculture proposals(e.g.,shelterwood cuts)and control treatments(primary unmanaged forests).We summarized the results for(i)sawmill operations,(ii)timber yield,(iii)overstory stability,(iv)forest structure,(v)microclimate and natural cycles,(vi)natural regeneration dynamics(flowering,seeding,foraging,recruitment,growth,and mortality),and(vii)biodiversity(mammals,understory plants,mistletoes,birds,arthropods,mosses,lichens,and fungi).In general,aggregate patches maintained forest structure and micro-environmental variables,and slightly increased biodiversity and forest reproduction variables compared to unmanaged primary *** the contrary,dispersed retention decreased forest structure variables and greatly increased biodiversity(richness and abundance)when it was compared to unmanaged primary *** conditions are influenced by variable retention harvesting,but direction and magnitude of the effect depend and differ according to retention *** this,biodiversity taxa greatly differed among groups depending on retention *** general,the species assemblages in aggregate patches were similar to those found in primary unmanaged forests,while they were significantly modified in the dispersed *** occurred due to(i)local extinction of some original species,(ii)the introduction of native species from the surrounding environments,or(iii)the invasion of exotic *** silvicultural method has been a useful tool to conserve biodiversity and ec
