Bats and marsupials as indicators of endemism in the Yungas forest of Argentina

Several studies have characterized the Yungas as a separate biogeographic unit, mainly based in floristic components. However, these characterizations were mainly qualitative and did not include faunal groups. The Yungas have been assumed as a region with rich floral and faunal diversity, but without testing how well they are described by animal distributions. Our study consists of a formal analysis of endemism based on distribution of small mammals in the southernmost portion of the Yungas. This area is biogeographically very interesting because the Yungas are comprised of discontinuous fragments of forests that extend into temperate arid and semiarid habitats. As a first approximation, we contrasted a group of volant species （bats） versus a group of non-volant species （marsupials）. Our results show that small mammals are efficient indicators of endemism in Yungas. Eighty percent of the species of small marsupials included in the analysis supported the identified areas as being zones of endemism. Regarding bats, almost 55 percent of the species supported a designation of endemism. The results also show that the areas we considered are congruent with the botanical definition of the Yungas of northwestern Argentina and their subdivisions, an assumption that had not been previously tested with a formal quantitative method. We also found that non-volant species are better indicators of endemism than volant ones at regional scales, but volant species are better indicators than was previously thought.

Mechanical circulatory and/or respiratory assistance with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has become a standard of care for patients with circulatory (venoarterial) and/or respiratory (venovenous) failure refractory to standard therapies. Adult patients with congenital heart disease are an increasingly recognized and growing population and include various groups, such as undiagnosed cases in childhood and palliated and/or corrected cases, which require subsequent care because of residual lesions, cardiac arrest/insufficiency, and arrhythmias, among other conditions. In addition, these patients are prone to developing pathologies that are typical of adulthood with a generally increased risk of morbidity and mortality because of their low reserves and organic damage associated with the underlying heart disease, which makes them candidates for ECMO. These patients represent an additional challenge in this therapy because malformations and the presence of a shunt can generally affect the usual cannulation methods and hemodynamic and oximetry monitoring. Thus, the configuration decision must be made on a case-by-case basis. Here, we present a cannulation method, venopulmonary artery ECMO, which provides hemodynamic and respiratory support, and may be ideal for patients with shunts and/or right ventricular dysfunction. To our knowledge, this is the first report of this configuration in patients with congenital heart diseases.

Modeling and measuring glucose diffusion and consumption by colorectal cancer spheroids in hanging drops using integrated biosensors

As 3D in vitro tissue models become more pervasive,their built-in nutrient,metabolite,compound,and waste gradients increase biological relevance at the cost of analysis *** these gradients and the resulting metabolic heterogeneity requires invasive and time-consuming *** alternative is using electrochemical biosensors and measuring concentrations around the tissue model to obtain size-dependent metabolism *** our hanging-dropintegrated enzymatic glucose biosensors,we conducted current measurements within hanging-drop compartments hosting spheroids formed from the human colorectal carcinoma cell line *** developed a physics-based mathematical model of analyte consumption and transport,considering(1)diffusion and enzymatic conversion of glucose to form hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))by the glucose-oxidase-based hydrogel functionalization of our biosensors at the microscale;(2)H_(2)O_(2)oxidation at the electrode surface,leading to amperometric H_(2)O_(2)readout;(3)glucose diffusion and glucose consumption by cancer cells in a spherical tissue model at the microscale;(4)glucose and H_(2)O_(2)transport in our hangingdrop compartments at the macroscale;and(5)solvent evaporation,leading to glucose and H_(2)O_(2)*** model relates the measured currents to the glucose concentrations generating the *** low limit of detection of our biosensors(0.4±0.1μM),combined with our current-fitting method,enabled us to reveal glucose dynamics within our *** measuring glucose dynamics in hanging-drop compartments populated by cancer spheroids of various sizes,we could infer glucose distributions within the spheroid,which will help translate in vitro 3D tissue model results to in vivo.

Eucalyptus grandis plantations:effects of management on soil carbon,nutrient contents and yields

The expansion of fast-growing tree plantations is a worldwide process,with consequences on soil fertility and soil carbon *** results were found on the effects of afforestation with Eucalyptus on soil carbon and other nutrient *** discrepancies are usually caused by differences in climate,land use history,soil texture as well as by management related factors such as plantation age,number of rotations,method of establishment(plantation or coppice),harvest residue management and soil *** studied the effect of plantation age,number of rotations,and method of establishment on soils and plant nutrient concentrations in Eucalyptus grandis plantations in NE Argentina on different textured *** also determined if yields changed with nutrient variations in soils,and compared soils under plantations to soils under grasslands they ***-one *** stands of different ages,number of rotations and method of establishment were evaluated as well as eight grassland *** of carbon,nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium,calcium and magnesium were determined for soils and *** carbon and nitrogen decreased over the number of rotations and were more pronounced in soils with 50-60%sand than soils with>75%*** stands showed higher soil carbon and nitrogen levels than plantations,suggesting a negative effect of site preparation before planting on soil nutrient conservation,especially in fine-textured *** nutrient concentrations did not follow the trends observed for soil nutrients nor did they reflect nutrient *** was no evidence of decreased yields over successive *** carbon and nitrogen contents decrease when grasslands are replaced by *** plantations,and therefore a yield limitation may occur in a medium to long-term frame,especially in stands re-established for short-rotation *** residue management and site preparation must be specifically designed for improving so

Biosensor development has recently advanced as a result of their strong and indisputable uses as analytical methods in a variety of sectors,including medicine,food industry,environmental monitoring,metabolism,agriculture,military,and *** popularity of biosensors as devices for a variety of applications may be ascribed to their distinct advantages of fast or rapid analysis,high sensitivity,minimal sample demand and preparation,and no need for the specific skill of operation that traditional analytical procedures *** attempted to update earlier studies in this study by incorporating other materials that have been in use but have received less attention,such as carbon nano-onions(CNOs),metal-organic frameworks(MOFs),and biopolymers for biosensor manufacturing and design based on their unique *** assessment also took into account applicable applications in many *** considerable progress has been made in the application of biosensors,there is still a need for research development and enhancement,particularly in transforming most of the laboratory experiments that have already been published into portable on-site and implementable in the public domains.

Plants contain various factors that transiently interact with subunits or intermediates of the thylakoid multiprotein complexes, promoting their stable association and integration. Hence, assembly factors are essential for chloroplast development and the transition from heterotrophic to phototrophic growth. Snowy cotyledon 2 （SCO2） is a DNAJ-like protein involved in thylakoid membrane biogenesis and interacts with the light-harvesting chlorophyll-binding protein lHCBI. In Arabidopsis thaliana, SCO2 function was previ- ously reported to be restricted to cotyledons. Here we show that disruption of SC02 in lotus japonicus results not only in paler cotyledons but also in variegated true leaves. Furthermore, smaller and pale- green true leaves can also be observed in A. thaliana sco2 （atsco2） mutants under short-day conditions. In both species, SCO2 is required for proper accumulation of PSlI-lHCll complexes. In contrast to other variegated mutants, inhibition of chloroplastic translation strongly affects l. japonicus sco2 mutant devel- opment and fails to suppress their variegated phenotype. Moreover, inactivation of the suppressor of variegation AtClpR1 in the atsco2 background results in an additive double-mutant phenotype with variegated true leaves. Taken together, our results indicate that SCO2 plays a distinct role in PSll assembly or repair and constitutes a novel factor involved in leaf variegation.

Synthesis and Characterization of Organic Bio-Absorbents Coming from Sugarcane Bagasse

In this work, a modification of the sugarcane bagasse is performed, in order to obtain organic catalysts. The bagasse analysis is performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), which indicated that characteristic peaks determined its chemical compounds. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is used to know the morphology. Finally, a discoloration test is conducted on an azo compound (methylene blue) in an aqueous medium, obtaining an efficiency of 98.6%.
