bACKGROUnD Fibromyalgia(FM)and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome(ME/CFS)are devastating metabolic neuroimmune diseases that are difficult to diagnose because of the presence of numerous symptoms and a lack of specific *** patient heterogeneity linked to patient subgroups and variation in disease severity,anomalies are found in the blood and plasma of these patients when compared with healthy control *** seeming specificity of these“plasma factors”,as recently reported by Ron Davis and his group at Stanford University,CA,United States,and observations by our group,have led to the proposal that induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs)may be used as metabolic sensors for FM and ME/CFS,a hypothesis that is the basis for this indepth *** To identify metabolic signatures in FM and/or ME/CFS supporting the existence of disease-associated plasma factors to be sensed by *** A PRISMA(Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis)-based systematic review of the literature was used to select original studies evaluating the metabolite profiles of FM and ME/CFS body *** MeSH terms“metabolomic”or“metabolites”in combination with FM and ME/CFS disease terms were screened against the PubMed *** original studies applying omics technologies,published in English,were *** data obtained were tabulated according to the disease and type of body fluid *** across studies were searched and P-values reported by the original studies were gathered to document significant differences found in the disease *** Eighteen previous studies show that some metabolites are commonly altered in ME/CFS and FM body *** vitro cell-based assays have the potential to be developed as screening platforms,providing evidence for the existence of factors in patient body fluids capable of altering morphology,differentiation state and/or growth ***,they can be further develo

The ajenjo,Artemisia mendozana ***(Asteraceae),grows in the Andean foothills of Mendoza and San Juan,Argentina,and is used as a medicinal plant for its antispasmodic and antifungal *** aim of this work was to obtain fractions of a chloroform extract of ajenjo leaves and to evaluate the in vitro effects on proliferation,viability and clonogenicity of b16-F0 melanoma *** a silica gel chromatography column,120 fractions were collected and grouped according to the chromatographic profile in 9 main fractions(F1–F9).Their major compounds identified were:terpenes(F1),terpenes and sesquiterpene lactones(F2–F3),sesquiterpenes(F4–F6)and phenols and sesquiterpenes(F7-9).b16-F0 cells were incubated for 72 h with DMSO(vehicle)or 0.1 mg/ml F1–*** 72 h of culture,F1 decreased both the growing index(GI)and cell viability.F2 and F3 both decreased GI and only F3 decreased clonogenic activity.F4 and F5 both decreased *** F5 decreased cell viability and F4 decreased ***,fractions F6–F8 did not affect any of the cell parameters assayed,while F9 decreased cell viability and inhibited clonogenicity.

A short review of malabsorption and anemia

Anemia is a frequent finding in most diseases which cause malabsorption. The most frequent etiology is the combination of iron and vitamin b12 deficiency. Celiac disease is frequently diagnosed in patients referred for evaluation of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), being reported in 1.8%-14.6% of patients. Therefore, duodenal biopsies should be taken during endoscopy if no obvious cause of iron defi ciency (ID) can be found. Cobalamin defi ciency occurs frequently among elderly patients, but it is often unrecognized because the clinical manifestations are subtle; it is caused primarily by food-cobalamin malabsorption and pernicious anemia. The classic treatment of cobalamin deficiency has been parenteral administration of the vitamin. Recent data suggest that alternative routes of cobalamin administration (oral and nasal) may be useful in some cases. Anemia is a frequent complication of gastrectomy, and has been often described after bariatric surgery. It has been shown that banding procedures which maintain digestive continuity with the antrum and duodenum are associated with low rates of ID. Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection may be considered as a risk factor for IDA, mainly in groups with high demands for iron, such as some children and adolescents. Further controlled trials are needed before making solid recommendations about H pylori eradication in these cases.

AIM To demonstrate the non-inferiority(15% non-inferiority limit) of monotherapy with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate(TDF) vs the combination of lamivudine(LAM) plus adefovir dipivoxil(ADV) in the maintenance of virologic response in patients with chronic hepatitis b(CHb) and prior failure with *** This study was a Phase IV prospective, randomized, open, controlled study with 2 parallel groups(TDF and LAM+ADV) of adult patients with hepatitis b e antigen(Hbe Ag)-negative CHb, prior failure with LAM, on treatment with LAM+ADV for at least 6 mo, without prior resistance to ADV and with an undetectable viral load at the start of the study, in 14 Spanish hospitals. The follow-up time for each patient was 48 wk after randomization, with quarterly visits in which the viral load, biochemical and serological parameters, adverse effects, adherence to treatment and consumption of hospital resources were *** Forty-six patients were evaluated [median age: 55.4 years(30.2-75.2); 84.8% male], including 22 patients with TDF and 24 with LAM+ADV. During study development, hepatitis b virus DnA(HbV-DnA) remained undetectable, all patients remained Hbe Ag negative, and hepatitis b surface antigen(Hbs Ag) positive. Alanine aminotransferase(ALT) values at the end of the study were similar in the 2 groups(25.1± 7.65, TDF vs 24.22 ± 8.38, LAM+ADV, P = 0.646). no significant changes were observed in creatinine or serum phosphorus values in either group. no significant differences between the 2 groups were noted in the identification of adverse effects(AEs)(53.8%, TDF vs 37.5%, LAM+ADV, P = 0.170), and none of the AEs which occurred were serious. Treatment adherence was 95.5% and 83.3% in the TDF and the LAM+ADV groups, respectively(P = 0.488).
