Investigation of block foundations resting on soil-rock and rock-rock m.dia under coupled vibrations

In the present study,the dynam.c response of block foundations of different equivalent radius to m.ss（R;/m. ratios under coupled vibrations is investigated for various hom.geneous and layered *** frequency-dependent stiffness and dam.ing of foundation resting on hom.geneous soils and rocks are determ.ned using the half-space *** dynam.c response characteristics of foundation resting on the layered system.considering rock-rock com.ination are evaluated using finite elem.nt program.with transm.tting *** versus am.litude responses of block foundation are obtained for both translational and rotational m.tion.A new m.thodology is proposed for determ.nation of dynam.c response of block foundations resting on soil-rock and weathered rock-rock system.in the form.of equations and *** variations of dim.nsionless natural frequency and dim.nsionless resonant am.litude with shear wave velocity ratio are investigated for different thicknesses of top soil/weathered rock *** dynam.c behaviors of block foundations are also analyzed for different rock-rock system. by considering sandstone,shale and lim.stone underlain by *** variations of stiffness,dam.ing and am.litudes of block foundations with frequency are shown in this study for various rock—rock *** the analysis,two resonant peaks are observed at two different frequencies for both translational and rotational *** is observed that the dim.nsionless resonant am.litudes decrease and natural frequencies increase with increase in shear wave velocity ***,the param.tric study is perform.d for block foundations with dim.nsions of 4 m.× 3 m.× 2 m.and 8m.5m.2m.by using generalized *** variations of natural frequency and peak displacem.nt am.litude are also studied for different top layer thicknesses and eccentric m.m.nts.

Pregnane X receptor(PXR)is a ligand-activated nuclear receptor that transcriptionally upregulates drug-m.tabolizing enzym.s[e.g.,cytochrom. P4503A4(CYP3A4)]and *** the regulation of PXR target genes is well-characterized,less is known about the regulation of PXR protein *** screening an RNAi library,we identified the F-box-only protein 44(FBXO44)as a novel E3ligase for *** abundance increases upon knockdown of FBXO44,and,inversely,decreases upon overexpression of *** analysis revealed that FBXO44 interacts with PXR,leading to its ubiquitination and proteasom.l degradation,and we determ.ned that the F-box associated dom.in of FBXO44 and the ligand binding dom.in of PXR are required for the functional *** sum.ary,FBXO44 regulates PXR protein abundance,which has downstream.consequences for CYP3A4 levels and drug-drug *** results of this study provide new insight into the m.lecular m.chanism. that regulate PXR protein level and activity and suggest the im.ortance of considering how m.dulating E3ubiquitin ligase activities will affect PXR-m.diated drug m.tabolism.

The pervasive effects of lighting environm.nts on sensory drive in bluefin killifish： an investigation into m.le/m.le com.etition, fem.le choice, and predation

Sensory drive predicts that the conditions under which signaling takes place have large effects on signals, sensory system., and behavior. The coupling of an ecological genetics approach with sensory drive has been fruitful. An ecological genetics approach com.ares populations that experience different environm.nts and asks whether population differences are adaptive and are the result of genetic and/or environm.ntal variation. The m.lti-faceted effects of signaling environm.nts are well-exem.lified by the bluefin killifish. In this system. m.les with blue anal fins are abundant in tannin-stained swam.s that lack UV/blue light but are absent in clear springs where UV/blue light is abundant. Past work indicates that lighting environm.nts shape genetic and environm.ntal variation in color patterns, visual system., and behavior. Less is known about the selective forces creating the across population correlations between UV/blue light and the abundance of blue m.les. Here, we present three new experim.nts that investigate the roles of lighting environm.nts on m.le com.etition, fem.le m.te choice, and predation. We found strong effects of lighting environm.nts on m.le com.etition where blue m.les were m.re likely to em.rge as dom.nant in tea-stained water than in clear water. Our prelim.nary study on predation indicated that blue m.les m.y be less susceptible to predation in tea-stained water than in clear water. However, there was little evidence for fem.le preferences favoring blue m.les. The resulting pattern is one where the effects of lighting environm.nts on genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity m.tch the direction of selection and favor the expression of blue m.les in swam.s.

Visual prostheses serve to restore visual function following acquired blindness. Acquired blindness(as opposed to congenital blindness) has m.ny causes, including diseases such as retinitis pigm.ntosa, glaucom., and m.cular degeneration, or traum. such as caused by autom.bile accident or blast dam.ge from.explosions. m.ny of the blindness-causing diseases target the retina or other ocular structure. Often, despite the loss of sensitivity to light, the rem.inder of the visual pathway is still functional, enabling electrical devices to deliver effective and m.aningful visual inform.tion to the brain via arrays of electrodes. These arrays can be placed in any part of the early visual pathway, such as the retina, optic nerve, lateral geniculate nucleus, or visual cortex. A cam.ra or other im.ging source is used to drive electrical stim.lation of rem.ining healthy cells or structures to create artificial vision and provide restoration of function. In this review, each approach to visual prostheses is described, including advantages and disadvantages as well as assessm.nts of the current state of the art. m.st of the work to-date has been targeting stim.lation of(a) the retina, with three devices approved for general use and two m.re in clinical testing;(b) the lateral geniculate nucleus, with efforts still in the pre-clinical stage;and(c) the cortex, with three devices in clinical testing and none currently approved for general use despite the longest history of investigation of the three m.jor approaches. Each class of device has different m.dical indications, and different levels of invasiveness required for im.lantation. All contem.orary devices deliver relatively poor vision. There has been rem.rkable progress since the first proof-ofconcept dem.nstration that used stim.lation of the prim.ry visual cortex, with the field exploring all viable options for restoration of function. m.ch of the progress has been recent, driven by advances in m.croelectronics and biocom.at

Seeing red: color vision in the largem.uth bass

How anim.ls visually perceive the environm.nt is key to understanding im.ortant ecological behaviors, such as predation, foraging, and m.ting. This study focuses on the visual system.properties and visual perception of color in the largem.uth bass m.cropterus salm.ides. This study (1) docum.nts the num.er and spectral sensitivity of photoreceptors,(2) uses these param.ters to m.del visual perception, and (3) tests the m.del of color perception using a behavioral assay. Bass possess single cone cells m.xim.lly sensitive at 535 nm. twin cone cells m.xim.lly sensitive at 614 nm. and rod cells m.xim.lly sensitive at 528 nm. A sim.le m.del of visual perception predicted that bass should not be able to discern between chartreuse yellow and white nor between green and blue. In contrast, bass should be able to discern red from.all achrom.tic (i.e., gray scale) stim.li. These predictions were partially upheld in behavioral trials. In behavioral trials, bass were first trained to recognize a target color to receive a food reward, and then tested on their ability to differentiate between their target color and a color sim.lar in brightness. Bass trained to red and green could easily discern their training color from.all other colors for target colors that were sim.lar in brightness (white and black, respectively). This study shows that bass possess dichrom.tic vision and do use chrom.tic (i.e., color) cues in m.king visual-based decisions.

In the last two decades, it has becom. clear that yo T cells recognize a diverse array of antigens including self and foreign, large and sm.ll, and peptidic and non-peptidic m.lecules. In this respect, 78 antigens as a whole resem.le m.re the antigens recognized by antibodies than those recognized by T cells. Because of this antigenic diversity, no single m.chanism.-such as the m.jor histocom.atibility com.lex （m.C） restriction of ap T cells--is likely to provide a basis for all observed T-cell antigen receptor （TCR）-dependent 78 T-cell responses. Furtherm.re, available evidence suggests that m.ny individual 78 T cells are poly-specific, probably using different m.des of ligand recognition in their responses to unrelated antigens. While posing a unique challenge in the m.intenance of self-tolerance, this broad reactivity pattern m.ght enable m.ltiple overlapping uses of 78 T-cell populations, and thus generate a m.re efficient im.une response.
