Data covering the whole of the surface of the Earth in a homogeneous and reliable manner has been accumulating over many *** type of data became available from meteorological satellites from the 1960s and from Earth-observing satellites at a small scale from the early 1970s but has gradually accumulated at larger scales up to the present day when we now have data covering many environmental themes at large *** data have been used to generate information which is presented in the form of global data *** paper will give a brief introduction to the development of Earth observation and to the organisations and sensors which collect data and produce global geospatial data *** of accessing global data sets will set out the types of data available that will be *** elevation models are discussed in a separate section because of their importance in georeferencing image data as well as their application to analysis of thematic *** paper will also examine issues of availability,accuracy,validation and reliability and will look at future challenges.

Electrosorption of solvated species at metal electrodes is a most fundamental class of processes in interfacial ***,we use its sensitive dependence on the electric double layer to assess the performance of ab initio thermodynamics approaches increasingly used for the first-principles description of *** show analytically that computational hydrogen electrode calculations at zero net-charge can be understood as a first-order approximation to a fully grand canonical ***,higher-order terms in the applied potential caused by the charging of the double layer include contributions from adsorbate-induced changes in the work function and in the interfacial *** contributions are essential to yield prominent electrochemical phenomena such as non-Nernstian shifts of electrosorption peaks and non-integer electrosorption *** illustrate this by calculating peak shifts for H on Pt electrodes and electrosorption valencies of halide ions on Ag electrodes,obtaining qualitative agreement with experimental data already when considering only second order *** results demonstrate the agreement between classical electrochemistry concepts and a first-principles fully grand canonical description of electrified interfaces and shed new light on the widespread computational hydrogen electrode approach.

Agriculture is subject to high demands regarding resilience as it is an essential component of the food production chain. In the agricultural sector, there is an increasing usage of digital tools that rely on communication and energy infrastructures. Should disruption occur,such strengthened dependencies on other infrastructures increase the probability of ripple effects. Thus, there is a need to analyze the resilience of the agricultural sector with a specific focus on the effects of digitalization. This study works out resilience capacities of the interconnected technologies used in farm systems based on the experiences and opinions of farmers. Information was gathered through focus group interviews with farmers(N = 52) and a survey with participants from the agricultural sector(N =118). In particular, the focus is put on the digital tools and other information and communication technologies they use. Based on a definition of resilience capacities, we evaluate resilience regarding energy and communication demands in various types of farm systems. Especially important are the resilience aspects of modern systems’ digital communication as well as the poorly developed and nonresilient network infrastructure in rural areas that contrast with the claim for a resilient agriculture. The result is a low robustness capacity, as our analysis concludes with the risk of food production losses.

The adsorption energies of molecular adsorbates on catalyst surfaces are key descriptors in computational catalysis *** the relatively large reaction intermediates frequently encountered,e.g.,in syngas conversion,a multitude of possible binding motifs leads to complex potential energy surfaces(PES),*** implies that finding the optimal structure is a difficult global optimization problem,which leads to significant uncertainty about the stability of many *** tackle this issue,we present a global optimization protocol for surface adsorbate geometries which trains a surrogate machine learning potential *** approach is applicable to arbitrary surface models and adsorbates and minimizes both human intervention and the number of required DFT calculations by iteratively updating the training set with configurations explored by the *** demonstrate the efficiency of this approach for a diverse set of adsorbates on the Rh(111)and(211)surfaces.

Celiac disease(CD)is one of the most common food intolerances in developed *** affects genetically susceptible individuals and has severe consequences if it remains undiagnosed.A disease known for more than a century,it is still the focus for experts from various fields of research and ***,pathologists,immunologists,food engineers and dieticians share their knowledge and expertise to improve the conditions of CD *** new insights in the pathomechanism of gluten processing and antigen presentation in CD,it was possible to improve the diagnostic antigen mimicking the primary epitope in *** celiac neo-epitopes are comprised of a complex of gliadin peptides crosslinked with transglutaminase(tTg).They are an early diagnostic marker for CD which occurs up to 6 months earlier than classical markers known to miss a certain amount of CD patients.

Three phosphate fertilizers from fossil and secondary starting materials have been assessed for their accumulated environmental footprint. Fertiliser types have been selected for their similarity in terms of phosphate and secondary nutrient concentrations and small waste flows, although significant and unavoidable differences in terms of phosphate solubility remain. Input data were taken from literature and from process simulations in Aspen Plus and HSC Chemistry, being based on evaluations of plants in operation or under construction. It was tested and confirmed that HSC Chemistry data can be directly exported to GaBi as an LCA evaluation tool. The paper shows in two cases a positive energy balance and a rather low environmental footprint of all three assessed processes.

The formation of LiOH as the discharge product instead of Li_(2)O_(2)in Li-O_(2)batteries(LOBs)is highly desirable due to the associated drawbacks of Li_(2)O_(2)-based chemistry,which involves the generation of reactive oxygen intermediates responsible for substantial side ***,the current challenge lies in the formation pathway of LiOH,which typically requires the chemical hydrolysis of the hazardous LiO_(2)or Li_(2)O_(2)intermediate,posing risks to the battery ***,we report a direct 4e–electrochemical approach to LiOH enabled by a single atom catalyst(SAC)consisting of CoN_(3)moieties embedded in graphene(CoN_(3)-G),while Li_(2)O_(2)is formed on the metal-free nitrogen-doped graphene(NG).The direct 4e–LiOH pathway significantly reduces the parasitic reactions,resulting in negligible damage to the electrolyte and *** stands in strong contrast to the conventional 2e–Li_(2)O_(2)pathway mediated by NG and the indirect LiOH pathway by MnO_(2).Theoretical calculations further clarify that the presence of CoN_(3)sites enhances the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates like*OLiO and*Li_(2)O_(2),promoting the protonation of*Li_(2)O_(2)and the cleavage of the O–O bond to form *** work demonstrates a promising strategy to modulate the reaction pathways in LOBs and broadens the applications of SACs.
