Conversion of inert N2 molecules into NH3 via electrochemical methods is an environmentally friendly alternative to replace the traditional Haber-Bosch ***,the development of highly efficient catalyst is still ***,we report a density functional theory(DFT)based high-throughput screening to investigate the potential of 23 atomic transition metals(Sc,Ti,V,Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn,Y,Zr,Nb,Mo,Tc,Ru,Rh,Pd,Ag,Cd,W,Pt and Au)supported on phosphorene monolayer as electrocatalyst for nitrogen reduction reaction(NRR).Our theoretical results demonstrate that V single atom anchoring on phosphorene monolayer exhibits good thermal stability,selectivity and excellent catalytic activity with a low overpotential of 0.18 ***,rational design principles and electronic descriptor between the intrinsic electronic properties and activation barrier have been *** work offers a new promising noble metal-free catalyst for NRR and reveals profound insights into the activity origin to guide further design.

Revisiting the Climatology of Atmospheric Blocking in the Northern Hemisphere

In addition to the occurrence of atmospheric blocking, the climatology of the characteristics of blocking events, including duration, intensity, and extension, in four seasons over the Northern Hemisphere was analyzed for the period 1950-2009. The seasonality and spatial variations of these characteristics were studied according to their longitudinal distributions. In general, there were sharp discrepancies in the blocking characteristics between winter and summer, and these differences were more prominent over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The blocking not only occurred more frequently but also underwent stronger amplification in winter; likewise, the blocking occurred less frequently and underwent weaker amplification in summer. There are very strong interrelationships among different blocking characteristics, suggesting that they are supported by similar physical factors. In addition, the relationship between blocking over different regions and East Asian circulation was examined. Ural-Siberia is a major blocking formation region in all seasons that may exert a downstream impact on East Asia. The impact is generally weak in summer, which is due to its lower intensity and smaller duration. However, the extratropical circulation over East Asia in summer can be disturbed persistently by the frequent occurrence of blocking over the Asian continent or the Western Pacific. In particular, the blocking frequency over the Western Pacific significantly increased during the study period. This climatological information provides a background for studying the impact of blocking on East Asian circulation under both present and future climate conditions.

Designing highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction is important for many renewable energy *** particular,strain engineering has been demonstrated as a powerful strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of catalysts;however,the required complex catalyst preparation process restricts the implementation of strain ***,we report a simple self-template method to prepare hierarchical porous Co_(3)O_(4)nanowires(PNWs)with tunable compressive strain via thermal-oxidation-transformation of easily prepared oxalic acid-cobalt nitrate(Co(NO_(3))_(2))composite *** on the complementary theoretical and experimental studies,the selection of proper solvents in the catalyst preparation is not only vital for the hierarchical structural evolution of Co_(3)O_(4) but also for regulating their compressive surface *** of the rich surface active sites and optimized electronic Co d band centers,the PNWs exhibit the excellent activity and stability for oxygen evolution reaction,delivering a low overpotential of 319 mV at 10 mA·cm^(−2)in 1 M KOH with a mass loading 0.553 mg·cm^(−2),which is even better than the noble metal catalyst of RuO_(2).This work provides a cost-effective example of porous Co_(3)O_(4)nanowire preparation as well as a promising method for modification of surface strain for the enhanced electrochemical performance.

Transition metal-nitrogen-carbon materials(M-N-Cs),particularly Fe-N-Cs,have been found to be electroactive for accelerating oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)*** substantial efforts have been devoted to design Fe-N-Cs with increased active species content,surface area,and electronic conductivity,their performance is still far from ***,there is limited research about regulation on the electronic spin states of Fe centers for Fe-N-Cs electrocatalysts to improve their catalytic ***,we introduce Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene with sulfur terminals to regulate the electronic configuration of FeN_(4) species and dramatically enhance catalytic activity toward *** MXene with sulfur terminals induce the spin-state transition of FeN_(4) species and Fe 3d electron delocalization with d band center upshift,enabling the Fe(II)ions to bind oxygen in the end-on adsorption mode favorable to initiate the reduction of oxygen and boosting oxygen-containing groups adsorption on FeN_(4) species and ORR *** resulting FeN_(4)-Ti_(3)C_(2)Sx exhibits comparable catalytic performance to those of commercial *** developed wearable ZABs using FeN_(4)-Ti_(3)C_(2)Sx also exhibit fast kinetics and excellent *** study confirms that regulation of the electronic structure of active species via coupling with their support can be a major contributor to enhance their catalytic activity.

Super Typhoon mangkhut hit Hong Kong on September 16,2018,necessitating the issuance of the highest tropical cyclone warning signal,No.10 Hurricane *** ferocious winds and record-breaking storm surge,mangkhut brought the most serious and widespread destruction to the territory in the recent three decades.A series of post event information search,field visits and damage surveys has been conducted by the Hong Kong Observatory(HKO)and the findings on the damages and impacts caused by mangkhut in different parts of the territory are documented in this ***,by analyzing the economic loss data reported by various government departments,public utilities and organizations in Hong Kong and the statistics on insurance claims from the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers(HKFI),the estimated direct economic loss due to mangkhut in Hong Kong is about HK$4.60 billion,which is about 3.8 times to that of Super Typhoon Hato in *** the contrary,in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,the estimated direct economic loss due to Hato is significantly higher than that of *** could be attributed to the early and effective warnings for mangkhut,increased public awareness and typhoon preparedness for mangkhut in 2018 since the fierce attack of Hato in 2017,and infrastructure enhancement of the major impact areas.

Spatial Variation of the Characteristics of Urban Heat Island Effect in Hong Kong

Recent studies by the Hong Kong Observatory show that the urban centre of Hong Kong has considerable Urban Heat Island （UHI） effect that arises from the different thermal properties between urban and the surrounding rural areas. The studies have also shown that the urban-rural temperature difference or UHI intensity in the urban centre of Hong Kong can be greater than 10℃. However, the characteristics of UHI in Hong Kong would not be unique were it not for its complex topography and the significant spatial variation in the degree of urbanization within the territory. Making use of the extensive spatial coverage of the automatic weather stations operated by the Observatory, this study attempts to document the spatial variation of the characteristics of UHI effect in Hong Kong in summer and winter through cases studies. Cases in summer and winter with meteorological conditions typical for high UHI effect （that is, clear sky, light wind and stable atmospheric condition） are selected for the study. The characteristics of UHI effect in terms of the daytime warming rates, nocturnal cooling rates and diurnal temperature ranges at the selected automatic weather stations are analysed. The territory of Hong Kong is then classified into different categories according to the identified characteristics with a view to portraying the spatial morphology of UHI effect in Hong Kong.

Aspergillus niger is an efficient cell factory for organic acids production,particularly l-malic acid,through genetic ***,the traditional method of collecting *** spores for inoculation is labor-intensive and *** our study,we used the CRISPR-Cas9 system to replace the promoter of brlA,a key gene in Aspergillus conidiation,with a xylose-inducible promoter xylP in l-malic acid-producing *** strain RG0095,generating strain *** induced with xylose in submerged liquid culture,brlAxylP exhibited significant upregulation of conidiation-related *** induction allowed us to easily collect an abundance of brlAxylP spores(>7.1×106/mL)in liquid xylose ***,the submerged conidiation approach preserves the substantial potential of *** as a foundational cellular platform for the biosynthesis of organic acids,including but not limited to l-malic *** summary,our study offers a simplified submerged conidiation strategy to streamline the preparation stage and reduce labor and material costs for industrial organic acid production using Aspergillus species.

Endometriosis is a common and benign angiogenesisdependent gynecological disorder,which refers to the proliferation and growth of endometrium-like tissues with neovasculature formation outside of the uterus.1 Available medical treatments for endometriosis containing hormonal and non-hormonal treatments had been limited for longterm usage by their side effects.2 Ideal medical treatment for endometriosis with efficacy to relieve symptoms and suppress endometriotic lesion growth and minimal side effects has been longing for decades.3 Angiogenesis is a promising therapeutic target for endometriosis.

This study aimed to report the outcomes of active surveillance(AS)in the management of low-risk prostate cancer(PCa).It recruited87 men who were prospectively followed up according to the Prostate Cancer Research International Active Surveillance(PRIAS)protocol with local adaptation at SH Ho Urology Centre,Prince of Wales Hospital,Hong Kong,*** investigated the predictorsof disease progression and found that baseline prostate-specific antigen density(PSAD)and the presence of the highest ProstateImaging-Reporting and Data System(PI-RADS)score 5 lesion on magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)are significantly correlatedwith disease ***,men with PSAD>0.2 ng ml^(−2)or PI-RADS 4 or 5 lesions had significantly worse upgradingfree survival compared to those with PSAD≤0.2 ng ml−2 and PI-RADS 2 or 3 *** study concludes that AS is a safe andeffective management strategy for selected patients to defer radical treatment and that most disease progression can be detectedafter the first repeated *** combination of PSAD>0.2 ng ml^(−2)and PI-RADS 4 or 5 lesions may serve as a useful predictorof early disease progression and provide a guide to optimize follow-up protocols for men in different risk groups.

We present a numerically stable one-point quadrature rule for the stiffness matrix and mass matrix of the three-dimensional numerical manifold method(3D NMM).The rule simplifies the integration over irregularly shaped manifold elements and overcomes locking issues,and it does not cause spurious modes in modal *** essential idea is to transfer the integral over a manifold element to a few moments to the element center,thereby deriving a one-point integration rule by the moments and making modifications to avoid locking *** the stiffness matrix,after the virtual work is decomposed into moments,higher-order moments are modified to overcome locking issues in nearly incompressible and bending-dominated *** the mass matrix,the consistent and lumped types are derived by *** particular,the lumped type has the clear advantage of *** proposed method is naturally suitable for 3D NMM meshes automatically generated from a regular *** tests justify the accuracy improvements and the stability of the proposed procedure.
