Clinical and Bacteriological Profile of Infections in Sickle Cell Children in Two Referral Hospitals in Niamey, Niger

Introduction: Infections are significant causes of mortality in sickle cell children in resource-limited countries. This study aimed to determine the clinical profile and bacterial ecology of infections in children with sickle-cell disease in two referral hospitals in Niamey. Patients and methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted from January 2018 to July 2020 in two referral hospitals in Niamey. All children aged one (1) to 15 years with sickle cell disease admitted for suspected infection, including at least one bacterial culture, were studied. Bacteriological analysis was performed using the appropriate culture media, using BactAlert (Reference 4700003 BTA3D60 BioMérieux). Results: Over 36-months, 350 children with a mean age of 10.9 months were admitted. The sex ratio was 1.2. The SS electrophoretic profile was the most common (93.4%). Immunization status was up to date in 66% of patients. Fever was the common reason for consultation (55.1%). Infection was confirmed in 62 patients (17.7%). The primary diagnoses were bacterial gastroenteritis (24.2%) and urinary tract infection (19.4%). Blood cultures were isolated from Salmonella typhi (13.0%) and Escherichia coli (8.7%). Klebsiella spp (7.1%) and Escherichia coli (5.0%) were detected in cytobacteriological examination of urine. Salmonella typhi (23.5%) and Escherichia coli (5.9%) were isolated on coproculture. Conclusion: Bacterial ecology appears not different from that usually observed in sickle-cell children. Salmonella and Escherichia coli were predominant.

Solar Radiation Estimation Based on a New Combined Approach of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Genetic Algorithms (GA) in South Algeria

When designing solar systems and assessing the effectiveness of their many uses,estimating sun irradiance is a crucial first *** study examined three approaches(ANN,GA-ANN,and ANFIS)for estimating daily global solar radiation(GSR)in the south of Algeria:Adrar,Ouargla,and *** proposed hybrid GA-ANN model,based on genetic algorithm-based optimization,was developed to improve the ANN *** GA-ANN and ANFIS models performed better than the standalone ANN-based model,with GA-ANN being better suited for forecasting in all sites,and it performed the best with the best values in the testing phase of Coefficient of Determination(R=0.9005),Mean Absolute Percentage Error(MAPE=8.40%),and Relative Root Mean Square Error(rRMSE=12.56%).Nevertheless,the ANFIS model outperformed the GA-ANN model in forecasting daily GSR,with the best values of indicators when testing the model being R=0.9374,MAPE=7.78%,and rRMSE=10.54%.Generally,we may conclude that the initial ANN stand-alone model performance when forecasting solar radiation has been improved,and the results obtained after injecting the genetic algorithm into the ANN to optimize its weights were *** model can be used to forecast daily GSR in dry climates and other climates and may also be helpful in selecting solar energy system installations and sizes.

Postpartum Family Planning at the Timbuktu Hospital in Mali

Introduction: Postpartum family planning is the prevention of pregnancies during the 12 months following childbirth. Few studies have been devoted to postpartum family planning in Mali. Our work will contribute to reducing unmet need for family planning. Objective: To study the use of contraceptive methods in the postpartum period in the obstetrics and gynecology unit of Timbuktu hospital. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study with prospective collection of data from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2023. All women who gave birth having chosen and benefited from a contraceptive method were included. The statistical test used was the Fisher test with a significance threshold fixed at 5%. Results: The frequency of contraception in the postpartum period was 17.03%. The average age of clients was 26.14% with extremes of 14 and 45 years. They were paupiparous at 56.4% with an inter-birth interval of less than 12 months at 12.3%. More than half of the counseling (58.5%) was done during postnatal visits. The methods chosen were implants at 48.1%, injectable progestins at 21.3%, intrauterine device at 14.7%, miro-progestin pills at 13.5%, tubal ligation at 1 .4% and condoms at 1%. The regular follow-up rate was 51.1% of cases and 25.6% had no follow-up. Conclusion: The overall rate of postpartum family planning of 17.08% remains low. Improving FP staff skills will reduce unmet needs and contribute to increasing contraceptive prevalence in Timbuktu.

Na_(0.5)(Bi_(3/4)RE_(1/4))_(0.5)TiO_(3)(RENBT,RE=Nd,Gd,Dy,and Ho)compounds were investigated in the framework of first-principles calculations using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave(FP-LAPW)method based on the spin-polarized density functional theory implemented in the WIEN2k *** charge density distribution and Ti K-edge X-ray absorption spectra reveal that the RENBT compositions with high polarization values are accompanied by a higher TiO_(6)distortion,DyNBT,and NdNBT *** effect of the rare-earth elements on the polarization is confirmed experimentally with the collection of the hysteresis *** investigation of the electronic properties of the compounds highlights the emergence of a magnetization owing to the 4f orbital effect of the rare-earth ***,the investigation of the chemical ordering shows a short-range chemical ordering for the pure composition and an increased A-site disorder for dysprosium doped NBT *** increased disorder may speak for increased relaxor properties in the RE doped compositions.

Enzymatic whey proteins concentrates (WPC) hydrolysis under optimal conditions of ficin crude extract (FCE) in two ratios E/S (0.5 and 1%) was studied,assessing the impact of hydrolysis on WPC by determination degree of hydrolysis (DH),Fast proteins liquid chromatography (FPLC),Tricine SDS-PAGE,antioxidant activity at sampling time beside,and technological properties (solubility,emulsifying activity index (EAI) and foaming activity (FA)) at the best condition (maximum DH and antioxidant activity) other *** showed,in the first 30 min,DH reached 22.76% at E/S (1%) with a total degradation of α-lactalbumin (α-La) and almost of β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg).A significant increase in antioxidant activity and solubility was observed,while not for EAI,and *** results indicate for the first time that β-Lg is susceptible to hydrolyse by FCE that rarely found for other *** hydrolysates showed very relevant performance,and suggest that could be appropriate production of functional ingredients.

Preservation of Juniperus thurifera L.:a rare endangered species in Algeria through in vitro regeneration

Juniperus thurifera *** an endemic Cupres saceae from the Aure`s Mountains of north eastern Algeria and endangered,in part,due to the scarcity of viable seeds It is threatened by other abiotic factors and the lack of an effective management strategy will increase its risk o *** dearth of information on its in vitro regeneration impedes its application in forest managemen *** therefore developed a micropropagation protocol using microcuttings with auxiliary *** were grown on different combinations of media supplemented with plant growth regulators at different *** highest number of shoots and branches regenerated from original shoots was obtained on Woody Plant Medium(WPM)supplemented with 6-benzylaminopurine(BAP)(0.5 mg L^(-1))and 2,4-dichlorophe noxyacetic acid(2,4-D)(0.25 mg L^(-1)).The best elongation of shoots was achieved with WPM supplemented with0.5 mg L^(-1)of BAP and 0.25 or 1 mg L^(-1) of 2,*** the second subculture,shoots had a higher number of branches than those of the *** highest rooting rate,38.8%,was obtained with shoots cultured in 1/2 Murashige and Skoog(MS)medium supplemented with 5.0 mg L^(-1)each of indol-3-butyric(IBA)and naphthalene acetic acid(NAA).Similarly,the highest root numbers and lengths were produced on 1/2 MS medium supplemented with IBA and NAA(5.0 mg L^(-1)each).During transfer to acclimatization,rates of plant losses of 50% *** second part of the experiment showed that the best shoot callusing was on WPM supplemented with BAP and 2,4-D,with either the combination 0.5+0.25 or 0.25+0.25 mg L^(-1).The results of this research provide a starting point for further studies on in vitro regeneration of *** for the sustainable management of its unique ecosystem in the Mediterranean basin.

Water Stress Effect on Biochemical Processes of Aus Rice Genotypes

An experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from March to July 2014. Plants were grown in the rain-protected polyethylene shelter or shed to avoid rain under natural conditions. The experiment was conducted on biochemical characters of aus rice varieties in various soil moisture levels in three rice genotypes as BRRI dhan55 (V1), BR6976-2B-15 (V2), and tolerant check Hashikalmi (V3), and seven water stress were imposed as treatments. Treatments were 0 days of water stress (control) irrigated continuously throughout the experimental period (T0). From twenty days onwards water stress was imposed for seven days when the age of the seedling was 20 days (T1), 35 days (T2), 55 days (T3), 75 days (T4), 95 days (T5), and 115 days (T6). Our findings suggest that the proline, starch, and sugar content were also found comparatively higher in BRRI dhan55 and Hashikalmi among the genotypes under water stress conditions. Under water stress conditions, proline was accumulated, sugar, and starch were decreased. The soluble sugar content was much lower under water stress conditions due to lower RWC, chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, and higher leaf rolling. Leaf accumulates anthocyanins under drought conditions and the red color increased as the intensity of water stress increased.

Objective:To evaluate the prevalence and types of complementary and alternative medicine(CAM)modalities among patients with cancer in Karachi,***:This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2021 to December *** hundred patients with cancer were invited to participate in the *** databases,namely,Google scholar,Publons,EMBASE,PubMed,Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database,and ResearchGate was used for questionnaire *** self-administered survey included questions on demographic characteristics,education level,socio-economic conditions and information about CAM therapies,prevalence,effectiveness,and common CAM *** analysis was conducted using SPSS software version ***:Out of the 500 invited patients,433(86.6%)successfully completed and returned the *** contrast to patients who were with younger,highly educated,professionally active,higher income,and had advanced cancer,time since diagnosis,type of treatment,cancer types and family history are significantly associated with CAM *** results showed that 59.8%of the participants were acquainted with complementary and/or alternative medicine and considered safe owing to its natural *** prevalence of CAM usage among cancer patients was 40.9%and the most widely used CAM modality was herbal medicine(27.7%)and dietary supplements(28.8%).Patients used CAM as a complementary therapy to improve the morphological parameter(28.2%),strengthen the immune system(6.8%),and to decrease the side effects of conventional treatment(18.1%).Most of the respondents get the information regarding CAM therapy from the electronic media(43.2%)and the family members(48%)rather than healthcare ***:Participants used CAM modalities along with the conventional health care *** multicentre studies should be conducted to provide information regarding the usage of CAM therapies and their eventual benefi

Two mitochondrial haplotypes in Pterochloroides persicae （Hemiptera： Aphididae： Lachninae） associated with different feeding sites

Pterochloroides persicae （Cholodkovsky） is an aphid species belonging to the subfamily Lachninae that uses different members of Rosaceae （specially Prunus spp.） as hosts. Partial sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 （COI） and the nuclear long-wave opsin genes were obtained for approximately 100 P. persicae aphid individuals sampled from 34 colonies collected mainly in Tunisia and other Mediterranean locations. The variability found at the mitochondrial locus revealed the presence of two maternal haplotypes in the studied area that differed in a single nucleotide. The nuclear gene analyzed, however, failed to reveal any variability in this species. The variability found at the COI locus was related to the season of aphid sampling and with the site of feeding, with haplotype I mostly detected in samples collected in spring and summer on trunks and branches and haplotype II only detected in aphids collected in autumn on roots. The observed pattern of molecular variation suggests the presence of two clonal races of P. persicae coexisting in the studied area differentially adapted to conditions prevalent in the alternative seasons and/or to different feeding sites.
