Phosphorus mobility in dam reservoir affected by redox oscillations:An experimental study

The internal sedimentary phosphorus(P) load of aquatic systems is able to support eutrophication, especially in dam–reservoir systems where sedimentary P stock is high and where temporary anaerobic conditions occur. The aim of this study therefore is to examine the response of sedimentary P exposed to redox oscillations. Surface sediments collected in the Champsanglard dam–reservoir(on the Creuse River, France) were subjected to two aerobic phases(10 and 12 days) alternated with two anaerobic periods(21 and 27 days)through batch incubations. The studied sediment contained 77 ± 3 μmol/g DW of P, mainly associated with the ascorbate fraction(amorphous Fe/Mn oxyhydroxides). The used sediment was rich in organic matter(OM)(21% ± 1%) with primarily allochthone *** results showed that redox oscillations enhance dissolved inorganic phosphorus release at sediment/water interface. During the first anaerobic stage, the P release was mainly controlled by the dissolution/precipitation of iron minerals. The more pronounced increase of P release during the second anaerobic stage(44%) was due to various mechanisms related to the change in quality of dissolved organic matter(DOM), namely a higher SUVA254 and humification indices. The release of more refractory DOM(rDOM) served to lower the microbial metabolism activity, possibly favored iron oxyhydroxide aggregation and thus limiting iron reduction. In addition, rDOM is able to compete for mineral P sorption sites,leading to a greater P release. In reservoir with predominant allochthone OM input, the release of more aromatic DOM therefore plays an important role in P mobility.

A series of energy storage phosphors,Lu2O3:Tb,M(M=Hf,Zr,Ti),were investigated by means of photoand thermoluminescence techniques to compare the effect of the co-dopant from the same group of periodic table of elements on charge carriers trapping capability and trap *** of the investigated processes were tracked individually for the Tb3+in the two different metal sites offered by the Lu2O3 host-noncentrosymmetric C2 and centrosymmetric *** is proved that both Tb3+ions participate in hole trapping and electrons are immobilized in traps whose depths are defined by the *** traps,~1.79 eV,appear upon Ti addition,while Zr and Hf generate traps of very similar,~1.40-1.44 eV,*** stored energy may be released not only by means of thermal stimulation but also upon the impact of optical *** from the 390-430 nm range of wavelengths was found the most efficient in the latter *** deep red radiation of 780 nm releases most of the trapped electrons in Zr/Hf co-doped ceramics but is much less effective in the case of Tb,Ti *** scheme of electronic levels engaged in charge carriers trapping and subsequent generation of thermoand optically stimulated luminescence was constructed.

Correlations between skin lesions induced by anti-tumor necrosis factor-α and selected cytokines in Crohn's disease patients

The application of iron mesh double layer as anode for the electrochemical treatment of Reactive Black 5 dye

In this work a novel anode configuration consisting of an iron mesh double layer is proposed for the electrochemical treatment of wastewater. The removal of Reactive Black 5 dye（RB5） from synthetic contaminated water was used as a model system. At a constant anode surface area, identical process operating parameters and batch process mode, the iron mesh double layer electrode showed better performance compared to the conventional single layer iron mesh. The double layer electrode was characterized by RB5 and chemical oxygen demand（COD） removal efficiency of 98.2% and 97.7%, respectively, kinetic rate constant of 0.0385/min, diffusion coefficient of 4.9 × 10^（-5）cm^2/sec and electrical energy consumption of 20.53 kWh/kgdye removed. In the continuous flow system, the optimum conditions suggested by Response Surface Methodology（RSM） are： initial solution p H of 6.29,current density of 1.6 m A/cm^2, electrolyte dose of 0.15 g/L and flow rate of 11.47 m L/min which resulted in an RB5 removal efficiency of 81.62%.

Biodegradation of beet molasses vinasse by a mixed culture of micro organisms:Effect of aeration conditions and pH control

The effect of aeration conditions and pH control on the progress and efficiency of beet molasses vinasse biodegradation was investigated during four batch processes at 38°C with the mixed microbial culture composed of Bifidobacterium,Lactobacillus,Lactococcus,Streptococcus,Bacillus,Rhodopseudomonas,and *** four processes were carried out in a shake flask with no pH control,an aerobic bioreactor without mixing with no pH control,and a stirred-tank reactor （STR） with aeration with and without pH control,*** experiments were started with an initial pH *** highest efficiency of biodegradation was achieved through the processes conducted in the STR,where betaine （an organic pollutant occurring in beet molasses in very large quantities） was completely degraded by the *** process with no pH control carried out in the STR produced the highest reduction in the following pollution measures：organic matter expressed as chemical oxygen demand determined by the dichromatic method ＋ theoretical COD of betaine （COD sum,85.5%）,total organic carbon （TOC,78.8%） and five-day biological oxygen demand （BOD 5,98.6%）.The process conditions applied in the shake flask experiments,as well as those used in the aerobic bioreactor without mixing,failed to provide complete betaine *** a consequence,reduction in COD sum,TOC and BOD 5 was approximately half that obtained with STR.

Versatile optimization of the synthesis method and composition of Yb^3＋ and Tm^3＋ co-doped CaF2 nanoparticles as well as a novel biofunctionalization method were developed and evaluated. Through multistep synthesis, the luminescence intensity of the Tm3. activator was enhanced by more than 10-fold compared to standard one-step synthesis. The proposed methods were used to homogenously distribute the doping ions within the nanoparticle＇s volume and thus reduce luminescence quenching. Optimization of dopant ions concentration led to the selection of the most efficient visible and near-infrared up-converting nanoparticles, which were CaF2 doped with 10% Yb^3＋ 0.05% Tm^3＋ and 20% Yb3. 0.5% Tm^3＋, respectively. To illustrate the suitability of the synthesized nanoparticles as bio-labels, a dedicated biofunctionalization method was used, and the nanoparticles were applied for labeling and imaging of Candida albicans cells. This method shows great promise because of extremely low background and high specificity because of the presence of the attached molecules.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and HFE gene mutations:A Polish study

AIM:To describe a Polish population with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)with regard to HFE gene mutations,as well as analyzing demographic and clinical ***:Sixty-two consecutive patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD were included in the ***,clinical,and laboratory data were summarized in a database.C282Y and H63D mutations of the HFE gene were analyzed using polymerase chain reactionrestriction fragment lenght ***:The analyzed cohort consisted of 62 homo-geneic Caucasian participants,66.1%men and 33.9% women,with a median age of 48 *** median body mass index was 29.05 kg/m 2 .Hypercholesterolemia was observed in 74.2%of patients and hypertriglyceridemia in 32.2%;16.1%had type 2 diabetes mellitus(DMt2).On liver biopsy,22.6%of NAFLD patients were found to have severe *** were no differences between frequencies of HFE gene mutations in subgroups of NAFLD patients with less and more severe liver ***,older age,female gender and DMt2 were associated with more advanced fibrosis in this Polish cohort,as well as higher glucose level,serum iron and transaminase aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase ***:HFE mutations conferred no additional hepatic fibrosis risk in NAFLD,but higher serum iron was a risk factor for severe liver damage in NAFLD,regardless of HFE mutations.
