Antimicrobial activity of water and acetone extracts of some Eucomis taxa

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal properties of acetone and water extracts of selected Eucomis ***: The bulbs of Eucomis bicolor, Eucomis comosa(E. comosa) and E. comosa cv. were dried and examples from each experimental treatment were ground separately into powder. Each sample was divided into two groups with equal amounts of powder,and respectively extracted with water and a 70% solution of aqueous acetone. The crude water extracts were then filtered through a 0.2 mm filter. The 70% aqueous acetone extracts were next concentrated at 40C. After the evaporation of the acetone, the samples were additionally filtered through a 0.2 mm filter. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the extracts against chosen microorganisms were then ***: The results of the study demonstrated that the water and acetone extracts of Eucomis bulbs have an influence on the viability of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus atrophaeus strains. In the case of mediums containing E. comosa and E. comosa ***, a decrease in the number of gram-positive bacteria was dependent on the extract concentration. The best results were obtained in the case of the 25% extracts. The water and acetone extracts of Eucomis bulbs did not cause a decrease in the number of Escherichia coli cells. Additionally, antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, Botrytis cinerea, Stachybotrys chartarum, Mucor circinelloides and Rhizopus oryzae cells were also not ***: The tested gram-negative and fungi microorganisms show resistance towards acetone and water extracts of Eucomis bulbs. The highest activity is found in the case of Aspergillus clavatus, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus atrophaeus strains,which shows water and acetone extracts of 25%.

Over the past decade,the presence of mistletoe(Viscum album ***)in Scots pine stands has increased in many European *** the factors that influence the occurrence of mistletoe in stands is key to making appropriate forest management decisions to limit damage and prevent the spread of mistletoe in the ***,the main objective of this study was to determine the probability of mistletoe occurrence in Scots pine stands in relation to stand-related endogenous factors such as age,top height,and stand density,as well as topographic and edaphic *** used unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)imagery from 2,247 stands to detect mistletoe in Scots pine stands,while majority stand and site characteristics were calculated from airborne laser scanning(ALS)*** on stand age and site type from the State Forest database were also *** found that mistletoe infestation in Scots pine stands is influenced by stand and site *** documented that the densest,tallest,and oldest stands were more susceptible to mistletoe *** type and specific microsite conditions associated with topography were also important factors driving mistletoe *** addition,climatic water balance was a significant factor in increasing the probability of mistletoe occurrence,which is important in the context of predicted temperature increases associated with climate *** results are important for better understanding patterns of mistletoe infestation and ecosystem functioning under climate *** an era of climate change and technological development,the use of remote sensing methods to determine the risk of mistletoe infestation can be a very useful tool for managing forest ecosystems to maintain forest sustainability and prevent forest disturbance.

Anthropogenic noise interacts with the predation risk assessment in a free-ranging bird

Anthropogenic noise can affect a number of behavioral,physiological,and ecological aspects of animals from major taxonomic groups,raising serious conservation *** example,noise pollution impacts communicative behavior and perception of signals,movements and distribution,as well as predator–prey interactions,such as hunting success or predator detection and predation risk *** have carried out an experimental playback study,in which we investigated whether exposure to anthropogenic noise(sound of a tractor)distracts free-ranging barn swallows Hirundo rustica from paying attention to an approaching human“predator”(the“cognitive distraction”hypothesis),or whether noise leads to increased responsiveness to this“predator”(the“increased threat”hypothesis).The subjects were male barn swallows attending their breeding territories during the time when the females were *** found that barn swallow males initiated fight at signifcantly greater distances to the approaching human“predator”in the noise treatment than during the quiet control *** results suggest that anthropogenic noise causes increased vigilance and reactivity rather than a distraction,enabling birds to avoid the“predator”more *** further discuss the mechanism behind the increased alertness in response to noise and contrast the“increased threat”mechanism,usually tested in previous studies,with an alternative“cognitive sensitization”mechanism.

Wind-induced vibration energy harvesting has a great potential for utilizing wind energy to supply power for low-powered *** improve the working performance of energy harvesters effectively,a suitable structural design is *** paper proposes a dual-beam piezo-magneto-elastic wake-induced vibration energy harvesting system to enhance the functional performance of aeroelastic energy harvesters in environments with variable wind *** system contains two piezoelectric beams coupled by magnets(forming upstream and downstream energy harvesters),and each beam is attached with a foam cylinder.A corresponding dynamic model is provided,and output characteristics are obtained at different wind *** and experimental verification indicate that both upstream and downstream energy harvesters can realize efficient energy *** the wind speed exceeds a certain critical value,the amplitudes of the system’s displacement and voltage are *** wind speed threshold value is approximately 1.25 m/*** the wind speed and magnet spacing are 10.2 m/s and 20 mm,respectively,the output power of the system reaches 4.9×10^(−4)***,the wind speed threshold value of the proposed system can be adjusted by an equivalent nonlinear restoring force.

The rate of deadwood decomposition processes in tree stand gaps resulting from bark beetle infestation spots in mountain forests

Decaying wood is an essential element of forest ecosystems and it affects its other *** aim of our research was to determine the decomposition rate of deadwood in various humidity and thermal conditions in the gaps formed in the montane forest *** research was carried out in the Babiog orski National *** research plots were marked out in the gaps of the stands,which were formed as a result of bark beetle *** plots were located in undisturbed *** research covered wood of two species–spruce and beech in the form of cubes with dimensions of 50 mm×50 mm×22 *** samples were placed directly on the soil surface and subjected to laboratory analysis after 36 months.A significant influence of the wood species and the study plot type on the physicochemical properties of the tested wood samples was *** characteristics strongly correlated with soil moisture.A significantly higher mass decline of wood samples was recorded on the reference study plots,which were characterized by more stable moisture *** decomposition of wood in the gaps regardless of the species is related to lower *** wood species covered by the study differed in the decomposition *** wood samples were characterized by a significantly higher decomposition rate compared to beech wood *** research has confirmed that disturbances that lead to the formation of gaps have a direct impact on the decomposition process of deadwood.

配体构象应变能(ligand conformational strain energy,LCSE)是计算机辅助药物发现中考虑的一个重要参数.通过量子力学(quantum mechanical,QM)方法对自由态配体和蛋白质口袋中的结合态配体的结构进行计算并比较,可以获得配体构象应变能.然而,对配体构象应变能的合理范围以及计算方法仍然存在争议.选择8个柔性较大、特征结构模式多样的配体,这些结构的分辨率在高分辨率(0.86×10^(−10))与中等分辨率(3.10×10^(−10))之间,分别采用3种不同的量子力学方法:密度泛函(density functional theory,DFT)M062XD3、Hartree-Fock和GFN1-xTB,对8个配体进行逐步优化并计算配体能量,分析在结合态配体逐步优化到局域能量最小的自由态配体的过程中配体在结构和能量上的差异.量子力学计算结果显示,配体构象应变能小于6.0 kcal/mol,结合态配体结构中显著的几何参数误差是结合态和自由态配体结构的主要能量差异.因此,在分析配体构象应变能之前,对结合态配体结构进行精确实验测定非常重要.

The electrochemical corrosion mechanisms of Mg alloys were extensively studied in previous investigations of different chemical com-positions,modified surface states and various electrolyte ***,recent research focused on the active state of Mg dissolution,leading to unresolved effects of secondary phases adjacent to a stableα-solid solution passive *** present study investigates the fundamental electrochemical corrosion mechanisms of three different Laves phases with varying phase morphologies and phase fractions in the passive state of Mg-Al-Ca *** microstructure was characterized by(transmission-)electron microscopy and synchrotron-based transmission X-ray *** electrochemical corrosion resistance was determined with a standard three-electrode setup and advanced in-situ flow cell measurements.A new electrochemical activity sequence(C15>C36>α-Mg>C14)was obtained,as a result of a stable passive layer formation on theα-solid ***,nm-scale Mg-rich precipitates were identified within the Laves phases,which tend to inhibit the corrosion kinetics.
