Systemic interleukin-9 in inflammatory bowel disease: Association with mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis

To evaluate circulating IL9 in inflammatory bowel disease and disease-associated anemia/cachexia and assess its potential as a mucosal healing *** IL9 as well as other cytokines (IL1β, IL6, IL13, IFNγ, TNFα, and VEGF-A) were determined in 293 individuals: 97 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and 74 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and in 122 apparently healthy controls. The clinical activity of CD and UC was expressed in terms of the Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) and the Mayo Scoring System (MDAI), respectively, and the severity of bowel inflammation in UC patients was assessed using Mayo endoscopic score. Cytokine concentrations were measured by a flow cytometry-based method using Luminex xMAP® technology. High-sensitive C-reactive protein concentrations (hsCRP) were determined in CD and UC patients using the enhanced immunoturbidimetric *** IL9 was significantly lower in healthy individuals [9 pg/mL (95%CI: 8.2-10)] than in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): both inactive [14.3 pg/mL (11.9-19.9)] and active [27.6 pg/mL (24.5-32), P < 0.0001]. Cytokine concentrations were significantly higher in active CD [27.4 pg/mL (23.4-32.2)] and in active UC [32.7 pg/mL (27-38.9)] compared to inactive diseases [15.9 pg/mL (10.8-23.4) in CD and 19.4 pg/mL (13.9-27.1) in UC, P = 0.001]. IL9 correlated weakly with CDAI (ρ = 0.32, P = 0.003) and MDAI (ρ = 0.35, P = 0.002) and strongly with endoscopic inflammation in UC (ρ = 0.74, P < 0.0001). As a negative marker of mucosal healing (MH), IL9 had an accuracy superior to hsCRP and IL6 [97% (P < 0.0001), 67% (P = 0.071), and 55% (P = 0.525), respectively]. IL9 was significantly higher in cachectic IBD patients [30.25 pg/mL (24.4-37.5) vs 21.88 pg/mL (18-26.5), P = 0.026] and negatively correlated with hemoglobin concentrations (ρ = -0.27, P < 0.001). As invasion science accepts that there is no single causal factor for biological invasion, the identification of groups of traits that are often associated, or ＂syndromes＂, is a logical move forward. Invasion syndromes are proposed to identify suites of site conditions （biotic and environmental） that render a site vulnerable to invasion by different types of invaders. This paper proposed four invasion syndromes which relate invader attributes （competitive ability, niche construction, phenotypic plasticity, and phenological niche separation） to the biotic characteristics （biodiversity and enemies） and environmental conditions （resource abundance and fluctuation） of invaded sites. The four invasion syndromes described in this paper are a development of hypotheses of how the many factors that influence species invasion might be associated. Invasion Syndrome 1 proposes that sites with relatively high resource abundance and high diversity should be vulnerable to invasion by species with high competitive ability. Invasion Syndrome 2 hypothesizes that sites with relatively low resource abundance and low diversity should be vulnerable to invasion by species with niche construction ability. Invasion Syndrome 3 postulates that sites with moderate or fluctuating resources and moderate diversity should be vulnerable to invasion by species with high phenotypic plasticity. Invasion Syndrome 4 hypothesizes that species introduced into a site where it has phenological niche separation from natives will not have to contend with interference from the biotic community at a site （diversity or natural enemies） and may invade where ever site environmental conditions suit its life history. Further work is needed to support, contradict, or refine these hypotheses and almost certainly will identify more invasion syndromes.

AIM To investigate the impact of IL28 B and OAS gene polymorphisms on interferon treatment responses in children with chronic hepatitis *** We enrolled 52 children(between the ages of 4 and 18) with hepatitis B e antigen-negative chronic hepatitis B(CHB), who were treated with pegylated interferon alfa for 48 wk. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the OAS1(rs1131476), OAS2(rs1293747),OAS3(rs2072136), OASL(rs10849829) and IL28B(rs12979860, rs12980275 and rs8099917) genes were studied to examine their associations with responses to IFN treatment in paediatric patients. We adopted two criteria for the therapeutic response, achieving an hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA level < 2000 IU/m L and normalization of ALT activity(< 40 IU/L). To perform the analyses, we compared the patients in terms of achieving a partial response(PR) and a complete response(CR) upon measurement at the 24-wk posttreatment follow-up. RESULTS The PR and CR rates were 80.8% and 42.3%, respectively. Factors such as age, gender and liver histology had no impact on the type of response(partial or complete). A statistically significant relationship between higher baseline HBV DNA and ALT activity levels and lower rates of PR and CR was shown(P < 0.05). The allele association analysis revealed that only the IL-28 B rs12979860(C vs T) and IL28 B rs12980275(A vs G) markers significantly affected the achievement of PR(P = 0.021, OR = 3.3, 95%CI: 1.2-9.2 and P = 0.014, OR = 3.7, 95%CI: 1.3-10.1, respectively). However, in the genotype analysis, only IL-28 B rs12980275 was significantly associated with PR(AA vs AG-GG, P = 0.014, OR = 10.9, 95%CI: 1.3-93.9). The association analysis for CR showed that the TT genotype of IL28 B rs12979860 was present only in the no-CR group(P = 0.033) and the AA genotype of OASL rs10849829 was significantly more frequent in the noCR group(P = 0.044, OR = 0.26, 95%CI: 0.07-0.88). Terrestrial floras underwent important changes during the Lopingian （Late Permian）, Early Triassic, and Middle Triassic, i.e., before, during, and after the end-Permian mass extinction. An accurate account of these developments requires reliable correlation. Macrofossils of land plants can only provide a low-resolution biostratigraphy, while detailed zonation schemes based on palynomorphs are available for many regions. Their applicability is still limited due to several factors, such as （micro-）floral provincialism, a lack of suitable marker taxa commonly occurring at important boundaries, and in many cases a lack of independent age control. Nevertheless, these palynostratigraphic schemes are regularly used for dating and correlation of successions between different regions. To support such efforts, the biozonation schemes based on palynomorphs from the Lopingian up to and including the Middle Triassic from across the world are summarized and revised. Thus, a consistent correlation of palynozones with the currently recognized international stages is established.

The peptides proctolin, crustacean cardioactive peptide （CCAP） and FMRFamide, which are known to modulate insect muscle contractions, were assayed for their action on oviduct contractions in Hylobius abietis. A video microscopy technique and computer-based method of data acquisition and analysis were used to investigate the effects of theses peptides on spontaneous contractions of continuously perfused oviducts. All three peptides tested stimulate spontaneous contraction activity of the pine weevil oviduct, increasing the frequency and amplitude of phasic contractions in a dose-dependent manner. Proctolin is more potent as a stimulator than CCAR For proctolin a threshold response of oviduct muscles is at concentration of peptide 10-11-10^-10mol/L and for CCAP at concentration range 10-10-10-9 mol/L. FMRFamide exerts a weak stimulatory effect on the oviduct, and at higher concentrations of the peptide （above 10.8 mol/L）. The peptides exert different responses on oviduct contractions and they may play a role as functional regulators in such processes as egg movement and oviposition.

Herein the Landau model of the transition from laminar to turbulent fluid flow is generalized to include the effect of memory. The original Landau model is quadratically nonlinear and memoryless, with turbulent fluctuations decaying exponentially. However, recent experiments show a dependence of the decay of fluctuations on memory, with the exponential being replaced by an inverse power law. This transition is explained herein as being due to critical slowing down. The fractional calculus is used to model this memory and to relate the index of the inverse power law decay to that of the fractional derivative in time.
