Background Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction,and septic cardiomyopathy(SCM)may complicate the course of the *** with multidrug-resistant(MDR)pathogens has been linked with worse *** study aims to evaluate SCM in patients with infections caused by different antimicrobial-resistant *** This retrospective study included patients with sepsis/septic shock,hospitalized,and intubated in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital of Larissa between January 2022 and September 2023 with echocardiographic data during the first two days after infection *** patients were divided into two groups:non-MDR-SCM group and MDR-SCM *** cardiac function was compared between the two *** A total of 62 patients were included in the ***-four patients comprised the MDR-SCM and 18 the non-MDR-SCM ***-six patients(41.9%)presented with left ventricular(LV)systolic dysfunction,and≤35%right ventricular fractional area change(RVFAC)was present in 56.4%.LV systolic function was more severely impaired in the non-MDR-SCM group(left ventricular ejection fraction,35.8%±4.9%vs.45.6%±2.4%,P=0.049;LV outflow tract velocity time integral,[10.1±1.4]cm vs.[15.3±0.74]cm,P=0.001;LV-Strain,–9.02%±0.9%vs.–14.02%±0.7%,P=0.001).The MDR-SCM group presented with more severe right ventricular(RV)dilatation(right ventricular end-diastolic area/left ventricular end-diastolic area,0.81±0.03 vs.0.7±0.05,P=0.042)and worse RV systolic function(RVFAC,32.3%±1.9%vs.39.6%±2.7%,P=0.035;tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion,[15.9±0.9]mm vs.[18.1±0.9]mm,P=0.165;systolic tissue Doppler velocity measured at the lateral tricuspid annulus,[9.9±0.5]cm/s vs.[13.1±0.8]cm/s,P=0.002;RV-strain,–11.1%±0.7%vs.–15.1%±0.9%,P=0.002).Conclusion SCM related to MDR infection presents with RV systolic dysfunction predominance,while non-MDR-SCM is mainly depicted with LV systolic dysfunction impairment.

The central nervous system is known to have limited regenerative *** only does this halt the human body’s reparative processes after central nervous system lesions,but it also impedes the establishment of effective and safe therapeutic options for such *** the high prevalence of stroke and spinal cord injury in the general population,these conditions remain incurable and place a heavy burden on patients’families and on society more *** and neural engineering are diverse biomedical fields that attempt reparative treatments,utilizing stem cells-based strategies,biologically active molecules,nanotechnology,exosomes and highly tunable biodegradable systems(e.g.,certain hydrogels).Although there are studies demonstrating promising preclinical results,safe clinical translation has not yet been accomplished.A key gap in clinical translation is the absence of an ideal animal or ex vivo model that can perfectly simulate the human microenvironment,and also correspond to all the complex pathophysiological and neuroanatomical factors that affect functional outcomes in humans after central nervous system *** an ideal model does not currently exist,but it seems that the nonhuman primate model is uniquely qualified for this role,given its close resemblance to *** review considers some regenerative therapies for central nervous system repair that hold promise for future clinical *** addition,it attempts to uncover some of the main reasons why clinical translation might fail without the implementation of nonhuman primate models in the research pipeline.

This paper contributes to the well-known challenge of active user participation in demand side management(DSM).In DSM, there is a need for modern pricing mechanisms that will be able to effectively incentivize selfishly behaving users in modifying their energy consumption pattern towards system-level goals like energy *** generally desired properties of DSM algorithms are: user satisfaction, energy cost minimization and *** this paper, a personalized real-time pricing(P-RTP) mechanism design framework is proposed that fairly allocates the energy cost reduction only to the users that provoke ***, the proposed mechanism achieves significant reduction of the energy cost without sacrificing at all the welfare(user satisfaction)of electricity *** business model that the proposed mechanism envisages is highly competitive flexibility market environments as well as energy cooperatives.

Biomarkers of end of shift exposure to disinfection byproducts in nurses

Increased disinfectant use commonly takes place in hospitals and other health care settings. A cross-sectional study among active nurses in two Cypriot public hospitals（n = 179） was conducted to examine the prevalence of exposure to disinfection byproducts（DBPs）, such as trihalomethanes（THMs） using both self-reported information and biomarker *** objectives of this study were to： i） quantify the magnitude and variability of occupational exposure to disinfectants/DBPs in nurses, ii） generate job exposure matrices（JEM） and job task exposure matrices（JTEM） for disinfectants, and iii） assess the major determinants of urinary THMs in nurses. End of shift urinary total THM values showed high variability among the nurses, but did not differ between hospitals. The disinfectant group of alcohols/phenols was used by 〉 98% of nurses, followed by octenidine（82%）, iodine and chlorine（39%, each）,chlorhexidine（25%）, formaldehyde（12%）, hydrogen peroxide（11%）, and peracetic acid/ammonia/quaternary ammonium compounds（QACs）, all being 〈 8% each. Chlorine use during the past 24 hr was associated with significantly（p 〈 0.05） lower brominated THMs（Br THMs） after adjusting for age, gender and BMI, while a positive association was shown for TCM and the sum of all THMs（TTHMs）, albeit not significant. Nurses were exposed to nearly double the levels of TTHMs and BrT HMs（median and IQR, 1027 [560, 2475] ng/g and 323 [212,497] ng/g, respectively） when compared to those of the general population（552 [309,989] ng/g and 152 [87,261] ng/g, respectively）. This was the first occupational health dataset reporting measurements of biomarkers of end of shift exposures to disinfectants/DBPs.

Liberalized electricity markets,smart grids and high penetration of renewable energy sources(RESs)led to the development of novel markets,whose objective is the harmonization between production and demand,usually noted as real time of flexibility *** necessitates the development of novel pricing schemes able to allow energy service providers(ESPs)to maximize their aggregated profits from the traditional markets(trading between wholesale/day-ahead and retail markets)and the innovative flexibility *** the same time,ESPs have to offer their end users(consumers)competitive(low cost)energy *** this context,novel pricing schemes must act,among others,as automated demand side management(DSM)techniques that are able to trigger the desired behavioral changes according to the flexibility market prices in energy consumption curves(ECCs)of the *** pricing schemes proposed so far,*** pricing,interact in an efficient way with wholesale *** they do not provide consumers with strong enough financial incentives to modify their energy consumption habits towards energy cost ***,they do not interact efficiently with flexibility ***,we develop a flexibility real-time pricing(FRTP)scheme,which offers a dynamically adjustable level of financial incentives to participating users by fairly rewarding the ones that make desirable behavioral changes in their *** evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed FRTP is able to offer a 15%–30%more attractive trade-off between the stacked profits of ESPs,*** sum of the profits from retail and flexibility markets,and the satisfaction of consumers.

Neural tissue engineering,nanotechnology and neuroregeneration are diverse biomedical disciplines that have been working together in recent decades to solve the complex problems linked to central nervous system(CNS)*** is known that the CNS demonstrates a very limited regenerative capacity because of a microenvironment that impedes effective regenerative processes,making development of CNS therapeutics *** the high prevalence of CNS conditions such as stroke that damage the brain and place a severe burden on afflicted individuals and on society,it is of utmost significance to explore the optimum methodologies for finding treatments that could be applied to humans for restoration of function to pre-injury *** vesicles(EVs),also known as exosomes,when derived from mesenchymal stem cells,are one of the most promising approaches that have been attempted thus far,as EVs deliver factors that stimulate recovery by acting at the nanoscale level on intercellular communication while avoiding the risks linked to stem cell *** the same time,advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have offered the potential of using hydrogels as bio-scaffolds in order to provide the stroma required for neural repair to occur,as well as the release of biomolecules facilitating or inducing the reparative *** review introduces a novel experimental hypothesis regarding the benefits that could be offered if EVs were to be combined with biocompatible injectable *** rationale behind this hypothesis is presented,analyzing how a hydrogel might prolong the retention of EVs and maximize the localized benefit to the *** sustained delivery of EVs would be coupled with essential guidance cues and structural support from the hydrogel until neural tissue remodeling and regeneration ***,the importance of including nonhuman primate models in the clinical translation pipeline,as well as the added benefit of m

Data accumulated from neuro-imaging, clinical and morphological studies suggest that the cerebellum is involved in cognitive functions and thus may be important in the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia, since patients show cognitive abnormalities. In the present study, we have attempted to localize cellular metabolic dysfunctions applying the immunohistochemical and Western blot method to demonstrate the expression of the stress protein HSP70, which is a marker of cellular metabolic dysfunction in the brain. We studied the post mortem brains’ cerebellum of 12 normal controls and 10 schizophrenics. We have used the polyclonal antibody rabbit anti-HSP70 on paraffin sections as well as on nitrocellulose membranes. Bound antibody was detected using the indirect method of streptavidin-peroxidase-DAB. The results in the cerebellum of controls showed intense HSP70 immunoreaction in the synaptic glomeruli of the granular cell layer, in the cytoplasm and dendrites of Purkinje cells. In the same areas of the cerebellum of schizophrenics the HSP70 immunoreactivity was minimal. These results suggest that the reduced levels of HSP70 in the cerebellum are likely to contribute synergistically to the cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia. This may suggest abnormality of protective neural mechanisms in such pathological conditions.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a multifactorial disease in the pathogenesis of which contributes a variety of causative factors including genetic and environmental ones. They may also be interactions of genetic susceptibilities and environmental influences. Towards to that in the pathogenesis of the disease except smoking, it seems to have a great impact the genetic predisposition of the individuals suffering from that serious progressive disease. Regarding to these observations and findings very interesting studies have been conducted in order to elucidate the implications of different genes, and their polymorphisms in disease aetiology. This is a review which elucidates the impact of genetic susceptibility in COPD.
