Thermally modified organic materials commonly known as biochar have gained popularity of being used as a soil *** information, however, is available on the role of biochar in alleviating the negative impacts of saline water on soil productivity and plant growth. This study, therefore, was conducted to investigate the effects of Conocarpus biochar(BC) and organic farm residues(FR) at different application rates of 0.0%(control), 4.0% and 8.0%(weight/weight) on yield and quality of tomatoes grown on a sandy soil under drip irrigation with saline or non-saline water. The availability of P, K, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu to plants was also investigated. The results demonstrated clearly that addition of BC or FR increased the vegetative growth, yield and quality parameters in all irrigation treatments. It was found that salt stress adversely affected soil productivity, as indicated by the lower vegetative growth and yield components of tomato plants. However, this suppressing effect on the vegetative growth and yield tended to decline with application of FR or BC, especially at the high application rate and in the presence of biochar. Under saline irrigation system, for instance, the total tomato yield increased over the control by 14.0%–43.3% with BC and by 3.9%–35.6% with FR. These could be attributed to enhancement effects of FR or BC on soil properties, as indicated by increases in soil organic matter content and nutrient availability. Therefore, biochar may be effectively used as a soil amendment for enhancing the productivity of salt-affected sandy soils under arid conditions.

This study was undertaken to determine heavy metal resistance and antibiotic susceptibility of three non-pathogenic red pigmented bacteria namely WPRA3, SM11-3j and SC-G18, isolated from marine environments of Malaysia. The bacteria isolates were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing and by biochemical and morphological tests. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of all isolates showed ≥96% similarity to Serratia spp. Antibiotic susceptibility test of isolates was assayed according to the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. All isolates were highly resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics, but were susceptible to quinolone antibiotics. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of nine heavy metals (Ni2+, Co2+, Cr3+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+) against the bacteria isolates were determined via the plate-dilution method. The isolates exhibited resistance to Ni2+, Co2+, Cr3+ and Zn2+. Isolates WPRA3 and SM11-3j showed higher multiple tolerances to heavy metals. The results obtained indicate that bacteria from marine environments of Malaysia present interesting metabolic activities, which should be studied and explored for potential biotechnological applications.

AIM: To establish if a distinct urinary metabolic profile could be identified in Bangladeshi hepatitis-B hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients compared to cirrhosis patients and ***: Urine samples from 42 Bangladeshi patients with HCC (39 patients with hepatitis-B HCC), 47 with cirrhosis on a background of hepatitis B, 46 with chronic hepatitis B, and seven ethnically-matched healthy controls were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A full dietary and medication history was recorded for each subject. The urinary NMR data were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squared discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) techniques. Differences in relative signal levels of the most discriminatory metabolites identified by PCA and OPLS-DA were compared between subject groups using an independent samples Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test with all pairwise multiple comparisons. Within the patient subgroups, the Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare metabolite levels depending on hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg) status and treatment with anti-viral therapy. A Benjamini-Hochberg adjustment was applied to acquire the level of significance for multiple testing, with a declared level of statistical significance of P < ***: There were significant differences in age (P < 0.001), weight (P < 0.001), and body mass index (P < 0.001) across the four clinical subgroups. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was significantly higher in the HCC group compared to controls (P < 0.001); serum α-fetoprotein was generally markedly elevated in HCC compared to controls; and serum creatinine levels were significantly reduced in the HCC group compared to the cirrhosis group (P = 0.004). Aim: Breast reconstruction has several beneficial effects on psychosocial well-being and quality of life. The ultimate goal has always been to create the most natural breast mound. Thus in many centers, the unilateral pedicled transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap remains the most common technique for breast reconstruction. Our objective was to retrospectively compare the outcomes of ipsilateral and contralateral pedicle TRAM flaps. Methods: The total of 110 patients underwent unilateral breast reconstruction with pedicle TRAM flap at Cancer Institute of Tehran University of Medical Science from January 1996 to June 2011. Premorbid risk factors, postoperative outcomes and demographic data were assessed. The analysis of the recordings was done by SPSS 20. Results: Out of 110 patients who were included in the study, 87 had ipsilateral and 23 contralateral pedicle TRAM flaps. The incidence of flap complications that did not require surgical intervention was 19.7% in ipsilateral and 30.4% in contralateral pedicle TRAM flap. The incidence of flap loss requiring revision was significantly higher in contralateral group (P = 0.001). Major complications were noted in 11.5% of the ipsilateral pedicle TRAM patients and 26.1% of the contralateral group (P < 0.001). Minor complications were noted in 17.2% of the ipsilateral pedicle TRAM patients and in 34.8% of the contralateral group (P < 0.001). Total early hospital stay was longer in contralateral pedicle TRAM flaps (7.66 days vs. 10.68 days, P = 0.83). H igher c omplications were e ncountered i n c ontralateral p edicle T RAM flaps compared to ipsilateral pedicle TRAM patients (39.1% vs. 19.5%, P = 0.001). The type of pedicled TRAM flap (ipsilateral vs. contralateral), had significant effect on complications (odds ratio = 0.007, P = 0.002) while other variables had no significant effect on the incidence of complications. Isosexual precocious puberty in girls has several etiologies. Juvenile granulose cell tumor is one of the rarest causes that only stands for 1.5% of ovarian cancers. This tumor mostly encounters in first 2 decades of life. This paper is a report of an 8-year-old girl with precocious puberty that within five months developed breast enlargement followed by menarche. Works which are done to find the underlying cause of precocious puberty revealed juvenile granulosa cell tumor in her left ovary. She then under went laparoscopic surgery and 3 courses of chemotherapy. She did not experience any vaginal bleeding after that and the serum level of estradiol lay among its normal ranges, but after that the tumor relapsed and presented as abdominal pain and a huge mass which under went resection of all afflicted tissues. After 2 courses of chemotherapy, her status deteriorated and unfortunately she died after 6 months from the time of diagnosis. Treatment for this disease is consists of resection surgery and chemotherapy. If this tumor is diagnosed in its early stages, it will be curable, but in its advanced stages, up to 80% of patients die from recurrent tumors. The reported patient was diagnosed at stage IIIC that had poor prognosis.

The lung is an important organ that takes part in the gas exchange process. In the study of gas transport and exchange in the human respiratory system, the complicated process of advection and diffusion (AD) in airways of human lungs is considered. The basis of a lumped parameter model or a transport equation is modeled during the inspiration process, when oxygen enters into the human lung channel. The quantitative measurements of oxygen are detached and the model equation is solved numerically by explicit finite difference schemes. Numerical simulations were made for natural breathing conditions or normal breathing conditions. The respiratory flow results for the resting conditions are found strongly dependent on the AD effect with some contribution of the unsteadiness effect. The contour of the flow rate region is labeled and AD effects are compared with the variation of small intervals of time for a constant velocity when breathing is interrupted for a negligible moment.

Mental health disorders in child and adolescent survivors of post-war landmine explosions

Background: To describe the mental health status of 78 child and adolescent survivors of post-war landmine ***: Child and adolescent survivors of landmine explosions who were younger than 18 years old at the time of the study were identified and enrolled in this study. The mental health status of the participants was assessed by general health assessment and psychiatric examinations. Psychiatric assessment and diagnosis were undertaken using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for mental disorders(DSM-IV) criteria. A psychiatrist visited and interviewed each survivor and identified psychiatric ***: Seventy-eight child and adolescent survivors with a mean age of 16.11±2 years old were identified and agreed to participate in the study. The mean age of the victims at the time of injury was 8.2±3.12 years old(range 2–15). Thirty-seven(47.4%) of the adolescent survivors suffered from at least one psychiatric disorder. Twenty-nine survivors(37.1%) were newly diagnosed and needed to start medication and psychiatric treatment. The most common findings were anxiety disorders(34.6%), including posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) in 20(25.6%), and generalized anxiety disorder(GAD) in 7(9%) subjects. Mild-Moderate depression was found in 5(6.4%) subjects. No personality disorders were observed, and two patients suffered from mental retardation. The study results revealed a significant association between age of casualty, duration of injury and limb amputation, and types of psychological ***: Child and adolescent survivors of landmine explosions had a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders.

Objectives:The present study was conducted to evaluate the clinical competence and its related demographic factors among critical care nurses in Kermanshah,***:In this cross-sectional study,155 Iranian nurses were selected by stratified random *** data collection tools included a personal information form and the"Nurse Competence Scale".Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical ***:The mean score of nurses'clinical competence was equal to 76.14±1.59 out of 100,which was at a"very good level".The mean score of using clinical competence in practice was equal to 70.38±15.25 out of 100,which was at a"good level".Among the subscales of clinical competence,the highest mean score was related to"managing situation".The mean score of"using clinical competence in practice"was related to the subscale of"therapeutic interventions".There was no statistically significant difference among the score of clinical competence of nurses varying with different gender,age,academic degree,and work ***:The clinical competence of critical care nurses in Kermanshah was at a"very good"level,and the use of clinical competence in practice was at a"good level."Given the importance of clinical competencies in practice,nurses'clinical competence should be evaluated objectively and positive measures should be taken to promote the application of their clinical competence.
