Structural and Tectonic Evolution of El-Faiyum Depression,North Western Desert,Egypt Based on Analysis of Landsat ETm+,and SRTm Data

False color Landsat ETm＋（bands 7, 4, 2 in RGB） and SRTm images of the EI-Faiyum depression, Egypt, highlights major NE-SW faults and other lineaments trending NW-SE and N-S. Airborne magnetic data reveal some E-W subsurface faults which are not recognized on Landsat ETm＋ and SRTm images. Ratio images （5/7, 3/1, 4/3） and （5/7, 5/1, 4） were used for lithological discrimination of different rock types. The EI-Faiyum area is occupied by sedimentary rocks of middle Eocene, Upper Eocene, Oligocene, Lower miocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene and Holocene. Understanding the structural regime of EI-Faiyum depression in the Western Desert of Egypt is significant in relation to the neotectonics of the Nile Delta and to the development of new communities west of the delta. The area is covered by Late Cretaceous, middle to Late Eocene deposits, Oligocene deposits （comprising fluviatile sediments and basalt sheets） and Pliocene and Quaternary alluvium and sand deposits. New geological and structural maps were prepared at a scale of 1 ： 100 000 using Landsat ETm＋ and SRTm images coupled with extensive field work. The major structural trends are E-W, ENE, NS and NW--the same trends observed elsewhere in North Africa from NW Sudan to NE Egypt including north and central Sinai. EI-Faiyum depression is a structurally-controlled tectonic basin, marked by northeast-striking faults along its northern margin. These faults are parallel to similar faults of the Syrian arc fold belt, which includes a group of related faults, folds, push-up structures, and basins. Qarun Lake is located in the northern part of EI-Faiyum depression, at a right-step between two strands of the NE striking fault system. We have suggested elsewhere that EI-Faiyum depression is a pull-apart basin related to extension between these mismatched strands of strike-slip faults. Despite the benefits of big project dams, their reservoirs may have significant environmental impacts. The main objective of this paper is to develop an integrated analysis framework of remotely-sensed data ad GIS techniques for delineating surface area of the dam reservoir, simulating their capacities and assessing associated environmental impacts with application to Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). For this purpose, a methodology of four main steps was applied. The methodology involved delineating the up-to-date reservoir using remotely sensed data, simulating reservoir at full capacity, estimating current and potential reservoir capacity and finally assessing environmental impacts of the reservoir. The results revealed that the up-to-date reservoir covers a total area of 330.3 km2 with a gross storage capacity of 12 billion m3. Under full capacity scenario, the reservoir is estimated to cover a total area of 1650.9 km2, with a storage capacity of 63.4 billion m3. The GERD reservoir may lead to dramatic changes in the local environment with significant implications at both regional and global scales. In this respect, it was found that the reservoir will lead to destruction of ecosystems in a total area of 1300 km2 covered by grasslands and Savannah. Background: The etiology of ovarian cancer is not well-understood;numerous metabolomics profiling, epidemiological, and hospital-based case control studies have associated abnormal levels of blood glucose and serum lipids with the risk and the prognosis of various types of cancers including ovarian cancer. The association between the risk of the incidence of ovarian cancer and the alterations in the levels of blood glucose and serum lipids is not well defined. Objective: In this study we aimed to compare the levels of blood glucose, triacylglycerols, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with different stages of ovarian cancer and healthy controls to determine how they relate to the risk and prognosis of ovarian cancer. methodology: In a case-control cross sectional study, we enrolled ninety-nine Sudanese women, diagnosed with ovarian cancer but had not received any kind of treatment as the study group, and a control group of forty-one age-matched, apparently healthy women. The patients were classified according to the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists staging system into two groups: early stages (stage I & II) and late stages (stages III & IV). Blood glucose and serum lipids;triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were determined by enzymatic colorimetric methods using commercially available analytical kits. The IBm SPSS version 20 software was used for statistical analysis. A mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison of the median concentrations of blood glucose, triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the study groups. Logistic regression model was used to estimate the relative risk of ovarian cancer in relation to levels of blood glucose and serum lipids. P value of 0.05 was considered significant. The Nile Delta is considered to be one of the most vulnerable river deltas to Sea Level Rise (SLR) in the world. SLR is expected to affect large agricultural areas of the Nile Delta, either through inundation or higher levels and salinity of groundwater. It could be argued that such impacts would augment the problems experienced already in the area in terms of high groundwater table and salinity levels. In order to guide policy and decision making, especially in terms of assessing the economics of various adaptation options, there is a need to provide estimates of potential economic damage that could result from such changes. The paper in hand aims to estimate the economic value of potential primary impacts of higher levels of groundwater table due to expected SLR on agriculture productivity in Damietta Governorate as one of the Nile Delta coastal governorates. To conduct such an assessment, relationship between groundwater table level and agricultural productivity was first investigated in relevant literature. This was followed by reviewing prevailing conditions in the agricultural sector in the study area. Thereafter, a regression analysis for the main crops in the study area, between crop yield and groundwater table levels, was conducted. Based on the developed regression, a GIS (Geographic Information System)-based hydrological model, and a production economic model, were employed to assess economic value of higher levels of groundwater table impacts on agriculture productivity. It was found that future accumulative crop yield loss was estimated, using segmented linear regression, up to the year 2100 to be as much as L.E. 6.43 billion. It is worth mentioning that these estimates do not include indirect impacts of higher levels of groundwater table, which may include loss of jobs and/or earnings, impacts on food supply and food security in the area. Nuclear power plants (NPPs) are considered as the main source for generating electricity nowadays in some countries. The effect of impact of heavy fully loaded aeroplane such as (Boeing 747-200c) causes leakage of the radiation through the cracks generated on the external RC containment of NPPs, and this leads to severe damage for humans and cities. In this research paper, external RC containment is modeled using ANSYS and hit by Boeing 747-200c which is the heavier aeroplane compared to other jets and causes severe damage for external RC containment. In addition, the impact location for Boeing 747-200c is considered at 30 mily:Verdana;">mily:Verdana;">mily:Verdana;">m vertical height. RC containment response was studied after the impact of an aeroplane and a proposed structural health monitoring technique is applied using embedded sensors in order to detect and locate the embedded cracks that is generated due to the effect of impact of heavy aeroplane. It was concluded that RC containment is intact except for the impact region which is damaged. An experimental program was applied on a part of the element in ANSYS which is away from the impact region. Four specimens were cast using heavy weight concrete in laboratory. Three cracked specimens consist of different lengths of vertical cracks which represent different times of impact in order to replicate crack propagation as in ANSYS. The cracks are simulated inside laboratory specimens using failure criteria.
